Co-operative MacTavish Cup – First Round Fort William 8 Caberfeidh 1 Fort William proved too strong for their Marine Harvest North Division 1 opponents Caberfeidh at the Black Parks. This Co-operative MacTavish Cup first round tie was brought forward a week as the Fort’s Neil Robertson gets married next weekend when his club has a free Saturday. Gary Innes racked up four first half goals in an impressive first half display. Innes opened the scoring on 11 minutes and he added a second on 25 minutes. Innes completed his hat-trick on 42 minutes when referee Graham Cameron awarded the home side a penalty and he made no mistake from the spot. Gary Innes got his fourth goal on the stroke of half time to end the tie as a contest. Daniel Stewart got the Fort’s fifth on the hour mark and Gordie MacKinnon got in on the act on 73 minutes. Ryan Campbell on 79 minutes and Gordie MacKinnon with his second in the final minute completed Fort William’s scoring. Gary MacLennan provided some consolation for Caberfeidh.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 2 Newtonmore 6 Newtonmore stay on top of the pile following a 6-2 win over Inveraray. Danny MacRae was the champions’ top marksman with four goals whilst Glen MacKintosh grabbed a double. Several of the home players enjoyed a Benidorm break last weekend for Andrew McMurdo’s stag party and they competed well for 77 minutes before succumbing to the champions. Newtonmore’s Danny MacRae showed no ill effects from his return from injury last Saturday. Inveraray had Russell MacKinlay back in their side and it was he who put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes. However ‘More built up a two goal lead at the break thanks to a Danny MacRae double on 30 and 40 minutes, either side of a Glen MacKintosh strike on 33 minutes. Inveraray’s Stuart Robertson was on target on the hour mark to reduce ‘More’s advantage to a single goal. That’s the way it stayed until the 77 minute when Glen MacKintosh got his second to put his team 4-2 ahead. Danny MacRae completed his hat-trick on 81 minutes and his strike on the stroke of full-time sealed a 6-2 win. Lovat 0 Bute 0 Lovat and Bute played out a goalless draw in their 1pm throw up at Balgate. The home side has made a super start to the season but their momentum was interrupted when they had no game last week. They suffered a blow ahead of this game when Lorne MacKay, who has been very effective in midfield, was ruled out through injury. Bute’s Brian Liddell missed out with an ankle injury. Both sides had chances but neither were able to break the deadlock and so they shared the points. Lovat remain second in the table whilst Bute are in sixth place. Kyles Athletic 5 Kingussie 2 Kyles Athletic and Kingussie met for the second time this season. The Kings came out on top in the first clash at the Dell but both sides’ fortunes were reversed last weekend. Dunkie Kerr returned to the Kyles squad whilst Kingussie’s Ronald Ross was still absent. The match was switched to Col Glen’s Glendaruel pitch as Tighnabruaich is still not available. Throw up was at the earlier time of 12.30pm. 2011 Marine Harvest National Player of the Year Roddy MacDonald and former Fort William player Ewen Campbell put Kyles 2-0 ahead before a Fraser Munro brace squared the game. However a Thomas Whyte double, his fourth goal in two games, and a Dunkie Kerr effort gave Kyles both points from a 5-2 win. Glenurquhart 1 Kinlochshiel 2 Glenurquhart were to make the trip to Kirkton to play Kinlochshiel but an unplayable field meant a switch to Blairbeg with a 12 noon throw up. Neale Reid returned from injury for the home side and John Barr was also back, talking up the full back position to try and snuff out the threat of ‘Shiel’s Finlay MacRae. Visiting boss Johnston Gill saw two-goal Keith MacRae and captain Gordie MacDonald pick up knocks against Newtonmore last weekend. MacRae was in the side for this one but MacDonald didn’t make it. Glenurquhart had most of the early pressure without creating many clear-cut chances. However it was ‘Shiel’s Finlay MacRae who scored the only goal of the first half. Fraser MacVicar made it 2-0 with a terrific volley from a corner before Lewis MacLennan pulled a goal back for the home side with another fine strike. ‘Shiel held the single goal advantage to take the points. They remain third in the table.
