AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final Inveraray 14 Taynuilt 0 Favourites Inveraray won the first piece of silverware of the season for south shinty teams as they over-ran Marine Harvest South Division 1 opponents Taynuilt 14-0 in the rearranged AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final at the Strachurmore Sports Centre. The heavy rain in the south deemed the pitch unplayable last weekend but the weather had improved and a Saturday morning pitch inspection confirmed that the 4pm throw up would go ahead. Inveraray boss John Smylie had Euan MacMurdo available this week and the forward would have missed last week’s game as he was attending his brother’s wedding. Inveraray have dominated this competition in recent years whilst Taynuilt captain Stuart Scott, on the other hand, led his side into their first major final. However Taynuilt manager Davie Thomson is an experienced campaigner and he was well aware where Inveraray’s strengths lay. Stopping the Winterton side in their tracks was always going to be another matter though. Robert Baxter, who works for sponsors AJG Parcels, was the match referee. Russell MacKinlay gave Inveraray a 6 minute lead and Garry MacPherson made it 2-0 on 20 minutes. Chris Crawford added a third on 22 minutes but Taynuilt put up a spirited showing and it wasn’t until a minute before the break that Russell MacKinlay got his second to make it 4-0 at the interval. However the roof fell in on Taynuilt when they lost five second half goals during an eight minute spell. Garry MacPherson got his second on 49 minutes whilst Ruairidh Graham added a brace on 50 and 52 minutes to make it 7-0. Russell MacKinlay completed his hat-trick on 54 minutes whilst Ruairidh Graham did like-wise a couple of minutes later to make it 9-0. Euan MacMurdo grabbed a hat-trick with goals on 61, 64 and 80 minutes to extend Inveraray’s lead to 12-0 and Garry MacPherson completed his hat-trick with a strike 5 minutes from time. Russell MacKinlay became the game’s top scorer when he shot home his fourth a minute from the end to complete the 14-0 victory. The match was not televised live on BBC Alba as it would have been had last week’s meeting gone ahead. However match highlights will appear in the Camanachd Association’s YouTube archive.
Sutherland Cup – Semi Finals Fort William 0 Kingussie 1 Fort William met Kingussie at Spean Bridge with a place in the Sutherland Cup Final at Braeview Park at stake. The Fort had shown the better recent form in the league but a Scott Knox goal in the final minute gave Kingussie a 2-1 win when the sides met in league action at the Dell earlier in the season. Kingussie’s U17 starlet Savio Genini got the only goal of the game on 13 minutes to give his side victory and a place in the final. However the afternoon later turned sour for the youngster when he had to be substituted after suffering two broken fingers. Match highlights were filmed for the Camanachd Association’s YouTube archive. Glenurquhart 1 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore beat Glenurquhart 4-1 at the Bught Park, Inverness to set up an all-Badenoch Sutherland Cup Final. Newtonmore had Scott Chisholm free from suspension but Ross Aitken was absent. Newtonmore did have an ace in their pack in the form of reserve shinty’s top scorer, Evan Menzies and he put ‘More ahead after just 8 minutes. Calum Stewart made it 2-0 on 17 minutes and Evan Menzies’ second on 32 minutes gave the men from the Eilan a comfortable 3-0 advantage. Jack Hosie scored for the Glen a couple of minutes later to reduce the deficit and ‘More keeper Stuart MacQuarrie made a good save from Euan Lloyd as Glenurquhart enjoyed their best spell of the game. However it was Calum Stewart who got his second on 70 minutes to give Newtonmore a deserved 4-1 win. Match highlights were filmed for the Camanachd Association’s YouTube archive.
Balliemore Cup – Semi Finals Lochaber 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 The tie between Lochaber and Glasgow Mid Argyll was a 1pm throw up at the Winterton. Lochaber have become cup specialists this season, reaching the final of the Co-operative MacTavish Cup and they are in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter-finals. Work commitments ruled out Lochaber defender Donald MacRae and Shaun Nicolson was also missing. GMA had Finlay MacMillan and Craig Anderson back after they missed the team’s last outing which was the 6-1 win over Taynuilt a fortnight ago. Zandz Ferguson got the only goal of the first half on 26 minutes. Scott Patterson added a second 5 minutes into the second half and Ryan Toal made it 3-0 on 62 minutes. Ben Delaney rounded off the 4-0 win with a 72 minute strike and Lochaber can now look forward to their second final of the season. Beauly 7 Kilmory 2 Beauly beat Kilmory 7-2 at Taynuilt to set up an all-North Balliemore Cup Final at Castle Leod on Saturday 21 July 2012. It took extra time for Beauly to get past Marine Harvest South Division 1 opponents before they finally ousted Glenorchy 3-2 in the Balliemore Cup however a powerful second half performance in this 1pm throw up made for a more comfortable afternoon. Teenage forward Jack MacDonald was missing for the home side as he was abroad on holiday. Jamie MacLennan was another absentee. Kilmory were without the suspended Mark Robertson and John Strachan who both miss out because of a points accumulation. Craig Taylor put Kilmory ahead on 11 minutes but Marc MacLauchlan levelled on 23 minutes. Barrie MacDonald scored twice for Beauly on 29 and 39 minutes but a Steven Gilmour effort on the stroke of half-time to cut Beauly’s advantage to 3-2 at the break. Lovat 1 Kyles Athletic 2 Kyles Athletic go top of the Orion Group Premiership when they came from a goal down to beat fellow title contenders Lovat 2-1 at Balgate. Lovat manager Allan MacRae decided not to risk Lorne MacKay who has a hernia problem although the player was keen to play. Calum Macaulay was called up after just one appearance since his return to the second team and he started on the bench. Kyles boss Norman MacDonald was missing David Zavaroni as well as longer-term absentees Sandy MacVicar and Grant Irvine who are both unlikely to play this season. Lovat had the better of the first half and they took an early lead thanks to a 14 minute mid-air volley from Owen Ferguson which went in of Kyles’ keeper Kenny MacDonald’s caman. However Kyles came back strongly in the second half and Roddy MacDonald burst forward from his full centre role and produced a great finish to level the game on 49 minutes. Kyles went in front on the hour mark when John Whyte punished hesitancy in the home defence as he nipped in to push home a rebound off Lovat’s Stuart MacDonald, with Drew Howie on the goal line, after the keeper had saved at his left post. Lovat tried hard to level and visiting keeper Kenny MacDonald made some good saves. Lovat introduced Martin Bell in attack for the last 10 minutes and Ryan Ferguson saw one effort come off the post but Kyles survived this and 6 minutes of injury time to take the points south. Duncan “Ach” MacRae was another absentee. Gary Innes put the home side ahead on 15 minutes but a Keith MacRae shot from distance made it 1-1 on 29 minutes. Gary Innes put the Fort back in front a couple of minutes later with a disputed second before ‘Shiel drew level again when a Donald Nixon shy was deflected into the net a couple of minutes into the second half. Kingussie 3 Kilmallie 1 Kingussie played Kilmallie at the Dell with both sides keen to pick up the points. Kingussie were two points better off than their rivals going into the game but defeat could suck them into the relegation battle. Louis Munro was out for Kingussie because of a broken foot sustained in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup defeat to Kinlochshiel the previous weekend. He has been a major player in the Kings’ midfield this season and his absence was a blow for boss Russell Jones. Liam MacDonald got the only goal of the first half on 20 minutes. Kingussie then lost defender Lee Bain with a burst nose. However, as has so often happened over the years, Ronald Ross proved to be the difference with a second half hat-trick to give the home side both points. Ross found the target on 55, 75 and 85 minutes. Kingussie substitute Craig Dawson suffered a broken wrist and will be out for at least six weeks.
