11 March 2012 After an exciting opening day, the second weekend’s shinty fixtures took place on Saturday 10 March 2012. Orion Group Premiership Kilmallie 1 Lovat 2 Lovat go clear at the top of the Orion Group Premiership following their 2-1 win over Kilmallie at the Canal Parks. Lovat striker Greg Matheson followed up last week’s hat-trick against Newtonmore with the opening goal in this game after 14 minutes. John Stewart squared the game from the penalty spot 4 minutes from the break. Owen Ferguson put the visitors in front again on 56 minutes and they could have extended their lead when they were awarded penalty after 70 minutes but Greg Matheson proved that he is human after all by putting the spot-hit wide of the target. A couple of minutes later, Kilmallie were awarded their second spot-hit of the game by referee Robert Baxter. However Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald saved John Stewart’s second penalty attempt. Lovat saw out the remainder of the game to make it four points out of four. Kinlochshiel 1 Fort William 1 The game between Kinlochshiel and Fort William was switched to Balgate as both Kirkton and the Black Park were unplayable. ‘Shiel captain Gordie MacDonald put his side ahead with a 14 minute strike but 16 year old Arran MacPhee made it 1-1 with a goal 15 minutes from time. ‘Shiel go second in the table. Newtonmore 4 Bute 0 Newtonmore got their bid for a third successive title back on course when they beat Bute 4-0 at the Eilan. The match was to take place on Rothesay but the venue was switched following a midweek pitch inspection. Glen MacKintosh fired ‘More into the lead after 27 minutes. However it took three goals in the final12 minutes to seal the win. David Cheyne netted twice and Chris Sellar got the other. Kingussie 3 Kyle Athletic 1 Kyles Athletic made their first appearance of the season when they lost 3-1 to Kingussie at the Dell. Kings’ captain Craig Dawson scored an 8 minute first half hat-trick and although Dunkie Kerr replied in the second half, Kingussie went on to win their first points of the season. Glenurquhart 0 Inveraray 1 An Andrew MacMurdo strike on the stroke of half time gave Inveraray a 1-0 win over Glenurquhart at Blairbeg.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly 4 Lochcarron 1 Early league leaders Beauly made it two wins out of two when they beat Lochcarron 4-1 at Braeview Park. Ben Dalgety gave the visitors a first minute lead. However Barrie MacDonald struck on 8 and 15 minutes to put Beauly in the lead. David MacLean on the half hour mark and Jamie MacLennan 15 minutes from time sealed the win. Strathglass 2 Inverness 2 Inverness made the short journey Cannich to face Strathglass and returned home with a point following a 2-2 draw. Former Skye Camanachd player Somhairle MacDonald scored his first goal for the Highland capital side after 16 minutes. However a Laurence Jones strike on the half hour mark made it 1-1. Robbie Stokes put ‘Glass in front 20 minutes from time but Somhairle MacDonald grabbed his second a minute later to earn a share of the points. Lochaber 7 Skye Camanachd 1 Zandz Ferguson and Shaun Nicolson grabbed hat-tricks as Lochaber swept aside Skye Camanachd 7-1 at Spean Bridge.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Oban Camanachd 6 Aberdour 0 An Aidan MacIntyre treble helped Oban Camanachd to a 6-0 victory over Aberdour at Mossfield. Taynuilt 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 6 The game between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Taynuilt was switched to Musselburgh. Angus MacIntosh scored twice as the visitors won 6-1. Oban Celtic 2 Strachur 1 The clash between newly promoted Strachur and Oban Celtic was switched to Ganavan. Oban Celtic were narrow 2-1 winners thanks to efforts from Alan Duffy and Kenny Wotherspoon. Glenorchy P Kilmory P The game between Glenorchy and Kilmory was postponed as the Mart Park pitch at Dalmally was unplayable and there was no alternative field.
Marne Harvest North Division 2 Newtonmore 8 Lochaber 1 Reigning champions Newtonmore were the days’ biggest winners as they beat Lochaber 8-1 at the Eilan. Evan Menzies scored five times for the champions. Skye Camanachd 4 Lovat 0 Skye Camanachd built on last week’s win over Glenurquhart with a 4-0 victory over Lovat at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Iain MacLellan, Alan Palmer, Paul MacKinnon and Will Cowie were all on target. Aberdeen University 2 Kingussie 1 Kingussie returned to the scene of their 2011 Sutherland Cup success when they headed for the Granite City to play Aberdeen University. However it was the Students who took the points as first half goals from former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton and Steven MacKenzie cancelled out Michael Falconer’s opener for the visitors. Glengarry 3 Glenurquhart 0 Glengarry beat Glenurquhart 3-0 at Craigard. Steven Cameron scored twice in the final five minutes to clinch the win. Fort William P Kinlochshiel P A waterlogged pitch put paid to the game between Fort William and Kinlochshiel at the Black Parks.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Lochside Rovers 7 Inveraray 4 Inveraray were to welcome Lochside Rovers to the Winterton but an unplayable pitch meant a switch to Ganavan. Brian MacCallum netted four times as Lochside Rovers ran out 7-4 winners. Russell MacKinlay scored all four Inveraray goals. Aberdour 1 Kyles Athletic 3 Aberdour went down 3-1 to Kyles Athletic in Fife. Kyles forward Roddy MacColl made a scoring start to the season with a double against Lochside Rovers last weekend and he went one better with a hat-trick in this one. Tayforth 2 Ardnamurchan 1 Tayforth were to make the long trip to play Ardnamurchan but an unplayable pitch meant a change of venue to Musselburgh. Steven Thomson scored twice as Tayforth won 2-1. Col Glen 8 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Col Glen had home advantage against Glasgow Mid Argyll and their 8-1 win gave the home side a perfect start to the season after their win over Bute. Ewan Morley and Steven MacKellar chipped in with hat-tricks. Ballachulish P Bute P The match between Bute and Ballachulish was to take place at Taynuilt as Ballachulish’s Jubilee Park pitch was unplayable. However the pitch at Taynuilt also failed a pitch inspection so the match was postponed.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Inverness 1 Beauly 8 The Inverness and Beauly reserve sides clashed at the Bught Park. Inverness knew they would have to keep a close eye on Marc McLachlan who scored four times in last week’s win over Lochcarron. However McLaughlin went one better in this one netting five times in an 8-1 win. Caberfeidh 3 Lewis Camanachd 2 Colin MacLellan scored twice as Caberfeidh beat Lewis Camanachd 3-2 at Castle Leod. Strathspey Camanachd 1 Kilmallie 3 New boys Strathspey Camanachd were at home again and this time Kilmallie were the visitors. Goals from Brian MacKay, new signing Grant MacKenzie and Ross Mason cancelled out Andrew Hay’s goal for Strathspey who also saw a penalty saved by visiting keeper Craig MacIsaac. Lochbroom 1 Lochcarron 0 The local derby between Lochbroom and Lochcarron was to take place at Battery Park but an unplayable pitch meant the game was transferred to Ullapool. A Martin MacLean goal 15 minutes from time clinched a 1-0 win for the home side. Boleskine 6 Strathglass 3 A Lewis Smith hat-trick helped Boleskine to a 6-3 win over Strathglass at Farr. |
