Unexpected Foul-Up For Skye Referee | |
08 July 2014 Skye referee John Angus Gillies experienced a foul-up of a different kind when he took charge of the recent Marine Harvest National Division between Kilmallie and Fort William at the Canal Parks. The supporters from both sides were puzzled when referee John Angus Gillies (Gillie) held up play during this fiercely contested local derby. It turned out that a dog had left its mark on the pitch and, in the absence of an available “poop scoop”, a helpful supporter came onto the field and collected the offending item and placed it in a bag at the side of the pitch. However – and we are sure this is a coincidence - the bag turned out to belong to referee Gillie who was totally unaware of the “surprise” which awaited him after he blew his final whistle. With the game over and the players and supporters leaving the field, Gillie collected his bag and headed for the changing rooms. On opening his bag, he first thought that his hair gel had spilt - although exactly why his bag contained hair gel is an even bigger mystery! On closer inspection, the Grade 1 referee realised that his hair gel was intact but that a “foul” of the sort he had not been anticipating had been committed. There is no suggestion this happened because any of the supporters were “browned-off” with Gillie’s refereeing performance or that they thought he was having a “stinker” or even just “going through the motions” during the match. |
