The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 4 July 2015 | |
05 July 2015 With Wimbledon in full swing, it’s advantage Newtonmore at the top of the Marine Harvest Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 4 July 2015.
Marine Harvest Premiership Kyles Athletic 2 Newtonmore 3 The match of the day was the meeting between Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore at Tighnabruaich and two goals in the final 20 minutes gave the reigning champions a 3-2 win. Callum Miller recovered from a hand injury to take his place in the Kyles defence. Jamie Robinson and Chris Sellar were back from suspension for Newtonmore. Norman Campbell and Cameron Binnie were also back after missing last week’s win against Kilmallie through injury but ‘More were without Steven MacDonald and work commitments are likely to rule him out for the next few weeks. Newtonmore made the better start and Glen MacKintosh and Evan Menzies threatened before Scott Chisholm gave the visitors a 9 minute lead with a shot from just outside the D. However Kyles responded in the best possible way and ’More stayed in front for just 4 minutes with Thomas Whyte striking a loose ball past Michael Ritchie to level the contest on 13 minutes. The game flowed from end to end with Andrew King dominant at the back for Kyles and ‘More captain Cameron Binnie back to his best following a hand injury in the Newtonmore rear-guard. Kyles made a change at half-time, taking Roddy MacDonald back to full centre with his brother Innes MacDonald pushing forward. Thomas Whyte put Kyles back in front just 3 minutes into the second half. Roddy MacDonald had pushed forward from midfield and his low shot was saved with his feet by Michael Ritchie. However Whyte darted onto the rebound and he scored from inside the D to make it 2-1. Newtonmore made changes with forwards Fraser MacKintosh and Evan Menzies replaced by Chris Sellar and Conor Jones. And Kyles maintained their lead until 72 minutes when Glen MacKintosh made it 2-2, capitalising on slack play in the Kyles defence. The Kyles rear-guard, and keeper John Whyte in particular, disputed the goal but referee Lachie Wood waved away their appeals. Newtonmore were now enjoying their spell on top and the winning goal came just 3 minutes later with ‘More’s Chris Sellar getting the all-important strike with a deadly 20 yard drive. John Whyte them denied Conor Jones from point-blank range to prevent a fourth ‘More goal. Whyte again stood between Newtonmore and a fourth goal when he turned a blistering Conor Jones strike away for a corner. Kyles pushed hard for a leveller with a Roddy MacDonald effort from distance forcing a great save from Michael Ritchie. Kyles’ Grant Irvine put the ball in the net after taking a free-hit but the goal wasn’t allowed as no other player had touched the ball. Kyles were vulnerable to the counter-attack and home goalie John Whyte had to be at his best on more than one occasion. The win leaves Newtonmore on course for a sixth successive title success.
Kinlochshiel 3 Fort William 1 Kinlochshiel go second in the table as they beat Fort William 3-1 at Kirkton. Kinlochshiel boss Colin Fraser had a strong pool of players to pick from with Fraser MacVicar their only notable absentee. John MacRae, Mark MacDonald and Duncan “Ach” MacRae formed a strong midfield trio. Daniel Stewart was free of suspension for Fort William after missing last week’s defeat to Lochaber. However co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson were without a number of players including Gordie MacKinnon, Bryan Simpson, Arran MacPhee, Calum Shepherd and Cameron Grant. Youngster Seumus Gall was their only substitute. Fort William attacked down the slope form the throw up as Niall MacPhee found Ryan Campbell wide on the right and he shot goalwards with the ball just dipping over the bar with less than 10 seconds played. The home side took the lead with a terrific goal after 5 minutes. Nathan Whear played a shy from deep inside his own half. He didn’t connect with the ball as well as he’d have liked but Finlay MacRae was first to the ball and he send it long into the goal Fort William area which was expertly flicked on by Keith MacRae and Jordan Fraser ran in from the right and he crashed the ball high into the net on the half-volley for what was another fine finish from ‘Shiel’s top scorer. ‘Shiel; went 2-0 in front on 12 minutes, A partial clearance out of the Fort William defence fell for John MacRae and his initial shot was saved with his foot by keeper Paul MacKay but the on-rushing Keith MacRae tucked the ball home. Fort William also looked lively each time they attacked but they couldn’t find a way past Scott Kennedy in the home goal. ‘Shiel’s Jordan Fraser came off for treatment to a facial knock on 19 minutes with Alasdair Nixon coming on in his place and Fraser returned to the action just 4 minutes later. Kinlochshiel continued to press and they looked in control when Gordie MacDonald made it 3-0 when he shot a loose ball through a ruck of players on 32 minutes. The ball hit the inside of Paul MacKay’s right post before spinning over the line past a helpless keeper. A turn and shot from Duncan Rodger late in the first half was saved with his feet by Scott Kennedy who turned the ball away for a corner. There was a moment of controversy immediately following the restart as ‘Shiel’s Oliver MacRae sent a long ball into the visiting goal area. Paul MacKay came off his line but missed the ball which allowed Keith MacRae to run through on an unguarded goal, with his marker Sean Cameron trying to retrieve the situation. Cameron appeared to be holding MacRae’s caman which prevented the Scotland international making contact with the ball and Cameron swept the ball to safety. Referee Evan MacRae consulted with goal judge Richard Gall but waved away ‘Shiel’s claims for a penalty and the home side had to settle for a corner. There were a couple of flashpoints in quick succession for referee Evan MacRae to deal with and he calmed one incident down by booking both Finlay MacRae and Niall MacPhee. There was a stramash in the ‘Shiel goalmouth on 54 minutes and Scott Kennedy did really well to keep the ball out of the net. However with the keeper on the ground following the ensuing scramble Fort William claimed for a penalty and referee Evan MacRae pointed to the spot after consulting with goal judge Roddy Gillies. Duncan Rodger got plenty of power behind his penalty but he hit the ball straight at keeper Scott Kennedy who saved the ball with his midriff before clearing his lines. ‘Shiel’s Duncan “Ach” MacRae was replaced by Donald Nixon on the hour with Seumus Gall coming on for Ryan Campbell for Fort William. Oliver MacRae and Stevie Stewart clashed in midfield and the referee warned both players but resisted the temptation to flash the yellow card. Fort William continued to attack the home goal and they pulled a goal back on 67 minutes. Seumus Gall played the ball on from midfield to Graham Campbell who released Daniel Stewart and he played a one-two with Duncan Rodger before thumping the ball high into the net to make it 3-1. Fort William claimed for a penalty a minute later as Scott Kennedy made a great saved from a Duncan Rodger shot with his left foot. At the other end, Paul MacKay made a super save with his caman above his head from Gordie MacDonald and he later made a good stop from a Donald Nixon shot. An Alexander MacMillan shy from the left caused panic in the home goal area with 8 minutes remaining and Scott Kennedy did well to flick the ball away from practically on his goal line. When Duncan Rodger found Daniel Stewart on the penalty spot, he looked sure to fire goalwards but David Falconer flew in to make a goal-saving click with just 3 minutes remaining. Fort William forced a couple of late corners but they were defended well and the win lifts Kinlochshiel up to second spot in the league and there will be no relegation battle for the Kirkton side this season. Fort William had the better of the game in the second half but whilst the Kinlochshiel forwards won them the game in the first half, their defence did the business in the second period. Defender Finlay MacRae and keeper Scott Kennedy were excellent for Kinlochshiel whilst James Tangney and Niall MacPhee were best for Fort William.
Kingussie 1 Glenurquhart 2 Glenurquhart moved away from the relegation zone thanks to a 2-1 win over Kingussie at the Dell. Kingussie co-managers Russell Jones and Davie Anderson had a number of absentees to contend with. Defender Lee Bain was still missing and they were also without Savio Genini, Garry Munro, Louis Munro and John Gibson. Craig Dawson was back in goal after missing the second half of last week’s 3-2 Artemis Macaulay Cup defeat to Lovat through work commitments. There was also a place for Ryan Borthwick who has come through a series of reserve games after a period out through injury. Glenurquhart co-managers Billy MacLean and Dave Menzies were without captain Andrew Corrigan and Eddie Tembo and they included youngster James Hurwood in their squad for the first time this season. Glenurquhart were impressive in the first half with Fraser Heath and Ewan Brady in particular showing good skill, pace and movement. Fraser Heath had a goal ruled out for a foul in the lead up to his strike. Ewan Brady gave the Glen a 1-0 interval lead with a strike 3 minutes before the break but they could have had a bigger interval advantage had it not been for some good saves from Kings keeper Craig Dawson. Kingussie got back on level terms a minute after the restart with Jake MacPherson, who had just been switched to the forward line, shooting home. Kingussie suffered a blow when they lost Fraser Munro through injury early in the second half. James MacPherson collected a Fraser Heath pass and fired low into the net to put Glenurquhart back in front on 62 minutes and that proved to be the winner. Glenurquhart didn’t have the same intensity in the second half and Kingussie, who lost Ryan Borthwick when he was hit on the back with a caman, tested Glen goalie Stuart MacKintosh but they were unable to find an equalising goal. Kingussie haven’t won in their last six matches. They have drawn two whilst the four defeats have all been by a single goal which shows just how tight the margins are at the top level this season. Glenurquhart now go above Kingussie to seventh place in shinty’s top flight. The sides meet again in the league next weekend; this time at Blairbeg.
Oban Camanachd 1 Inveraray 1 The relegation battle between Oban Camanachd and Inveraray finished all-square as the sides drew 1-1 in their 3pm throw up at Mossfield. The home side continued with Gavin Stobbart in goal but they changed their side around a bit from the team which lost out to Kyles Athletic in the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final a week earlier. Daniel Cameron started up front whilst Scott MacMillan and Aiden MacIntyre dropped onto the bench. However injuries picked up last weekend ruled out both Lorne Dickie and Craig MacMillan. Inveraray were without John Kennedy who has a knee injury, Fraser MacNicol who required stiches after picking up a knock in his last outing and Grant Griffin who has an ankle injury. Malcolm Clark was given a starting spot in the Oban Camanachd side and he repaid his manager’s faith with the opening goal on just 7 minutes. The leveller came on the hour mark when Inveraray’s Euan McMurdo scored his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-1. Inveraray had chances to grab both points. Gavin Stobbart in the home goal made some great saves and even when Euan McMurdo rounded the keeper following one move in the last half hour of the game, a defender got back to keep the ball out of the net. A shoulder injury sustained during the game will keep Inveraray’s Chris Crawford out of next weekend’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter-final tie against Glasgow Mid Argyll. Oban Camanachd remain bottom of the table with three points from eight games. Inveraray are second bottom with a point more but they have played a game more. The sides meet at the same venue in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals in three weeks’ time.
Marine Harvest National Division Beauly 1 Skye Camanachd 2 The Skye Camanachd first team came from a goal down to beat Beauly 2-1 in their Marine Harvest National Division match at Braeview Park. Beauly’s Jamie MacLennan started his two-game ban following his red card in the Balliemore Cup semi-final win over Kilmallie a fortnight earlier and this suspension should be served before the actual Balliemore Cup Final against Glasgow Mid Argyll on Saturday 18 July 2015. Skye’s Allan MacKinnon was free of his one-match suspension for a bookings points accumulation. Sean Stewart gave the home side a 4 minute lead, with Marc MacLachlan providing the assist, and it took a couple of fine saves from Skye goalie Iain MacLeod to keep his side in the game. Skye settled into the game and play swung from end to end but the home side suffered a blow with around 7 first half minutes remaining as Marc MacLachlan limped off with Sandy Elrick replacing him. MacLachlan had a cut knee and his injury will be a concern given that the Balliemore Cup Final against Glasgow Mid Argyll is just a couple of weeks away. Jordan Murchison equalised with just 5 first half minutes remaining. Beauly keeper Josh Grant had saved from Kenny Campbell and Murchison took the ball out of the air on the end of his caman, and juggled it past his marker before volleying into the net from the edge of the D to make it 1-1. Sean Stewart had a goal disallowed in the closing stages of the first half by referee Graham Cameron for a kick. Jordan Murchison hit the side-netting and Barrie MacDonald hit the post as both teams slugged it out in search of a winner. And the winner came for Skye just 6 minutes from time. The move started with good work from Iain Nicolson who found Kenny Campbell on the Skye right. Campbell turned his marker before cutting the ball back to Jordan Murchison and he shot goalwards. Keeper Josh Grant got a foot to the ball but he could only help it into the side-netting. The win sends Skye to the top of the table but they have played a game more than second placed Kilmallie who are just a point behind.
Kilmallie 5 Caberfeidh 2 Kilmallie put last week’s heavy Artemis Macaulay Cup defeat to Newtonmore behind them as they beat Caberfeidh 5-2 at the Canal Parks. Peter Carmichael served the second game to a two match ban for Kilmallie but Craig MacIsaac was free of suspension. Liam MacDonald grabbed a hat-trick for Kilmallie with John Stewart scoring twice. Neil Rose and Ruairidh MacLennan were on target for Cabers. Kilmallie are a point behind Skye in second place and they have a game in hand which they play at home against Inverness next week whilst Skye are in Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup action.
Inverness 2 Ballachulish 2 Ballachulish picked up a morale-boosting first point of the season when they drew 2-2 with Inverness at the Bught Park. Inverness were without Somhairle MacDonald and he will miss their next few matches. Ballachulish’s David Campbell sat this one out as he served a one-game ban for a bookings points accumulation but Alan Clark was back after injury. Pat MacLean fired Balla’ into a 33 minute lead. However Dougie Rankin restored parity just 3 minutes later and the sides went into the interval on level terms. Michael Price put Inverness into the lead on 65 minutes but Balla’ won their point with a Lewis Bryson strike just 12 minutes from time. The visitors hardly had more than a couple of shots on target and Inverness will be wondering how they didn’t take both points. Young Balla’ goalie Cameron Sutherland did well to deny Inverness a win with several good saves throughout the match. Ballachulish remain bottom of the table with Inverness in second bottom position, three points above.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochcarron 3 Beauly 4 The match between Lochcarron and the Beauly second team at Battery Park was rearranged for Wednesday 1 July 2015 and the Braeview Park side edged it by the odd goal in seven. Lochcarron player / manager Ross Brown gave his side a 1-0 lead. However when referee Archie Ritchie pointed to the penalty spot at the other end, Martin Davidson stepped up to convert to make it 1-1. Martin Davidson was on target again to put Beauly in front and they took the 2-1 advantage into the break. A Lochcarron penalty from Ross Brown tied the contest at 2-2. There was a third penalty award in the game but this time Beauly’s Martin Davidson missed from the spot. However the Beauly full forward made amends shortly after when he completed his hat-trick to put his side 3-2 ahead. Calum Morrison scored what was to prove to be crucial fourth goal for the visitors to make it 4-2. Lochcarron’s Gregor Cushnie made it 4-3 a couple of minutes from time but Beauly saw out the closing stages to take the points.
Fort William 6 Kinlochshiel 0 The Fort William reserves got back on their winning ways when they beat the Kinlochshiel reserves 6-0 at An Aird. The visitors gave debuts to Shaun Peterkin, Morgan Fraser, Corran Campbell and Duncan Campbell. The Fort had Bryan Simpson in their side, his work commitments prevented him from travelling with the first team, and he gave his team a 4 minute lead. Ewen Campbell made it 2-0 on 8 minutes whilst Scott Knox added a third on 24 minutes and the home side led 3-0 at half-time. ‘Shiel keeper Raymond MacKay, in goal in place of Iain Cameron, made a good save with his feet following a Mark Lawrie shy on the Fort William right. The Fort’s final three goals came in the last 15 minutes. Bryan Simpson got his second goal to make it 4-0 on 75 minutes when he cracked home a low 22 yard drive into the corner of the net following a corner on the left. Just a couple of minutes later, substitute Zoe Smith’s reserve team goal at this level was also the first to be scored by a Fort William Ladies player at this level. Bryan Simpson had latched onto a long ball forward. Raymond MacKay saved Simpson’s shot but as the ball flew into the air; Zoe Smith reacted first and she calmly knocked the dropping ball into the net to make it 5-0. Bryan Simpson completed his hat-trick 4 minutes from time to make it 6-0. Fort William stay top of the table with six league fixtures remaining.
Newtonmore 6 Beauly 1 The Newtonmore second team beat the Beauly second team 6-1 at the Eilan. It was a return to Badenoch on successive Saturdays for the Beauly colts who went down 4-3 to the Kingussie colts a week earlier. It was a busy schedule for Beauly who also beat Lochcarron 4-3 during the week. Newtonmore won the match in the first half. They had Drew MacDonald in their line-up and he made it 1-0 after just 5 minutes. Iain Robinson added a second on 11 minutes and Calum Stewart then chipped in with a hat-trick with goals on 26, 42 and 44 minutes. Drew MacDonald got his second on the stroke of half time and there was only going to be one winner. Beauly’s Martin Davidson grabbed a consolation goal on 61 minutes. Beauly player / manager Stephen MacLean suffered a nasty injury when he was hit in the eye by the ball during the match. The Newtonmore reserves remain in second place, four points behind their Fort William counter-parts, but the men from the Eilan have a game in hand.
Glenurquhart 3 Lochcarron 1 The Glenurquhart second team overcame Lochcarron 3-1 at Blairbeg. Forward Daniel MacKintosh was back in the Glenurquhart squad after a period out of the game. Lochcarron had selection difficulties and they travelled with just twelve players. Glenurquhart had former youth player Michael Fraser in their side for the second successive Saturday and the former Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Motherwell and Ross County goalkeeper opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he pushed the ball home after visiting keeper Matthew Young had been unable to clear his lines. The home side would have increased their lead but for some good saves from Matthew Young. Fraser’s effort was the only goal of the first half but a persistent Daniel MacRae levelled for Lochcarron on 49 minutes. Lochcarron’s Peter MacKenzie came close to making it 2-2 but he was closed down by the Glen defence. Michael Fraser got his second when he took advantage of a mix-up in the Lochcarron defence to make it 2-1 on 63 minutes. David MacLennan was excellent for the Glen all afternoon and he rounded off the win when he launched a huge shy from midfield into the Lochcarron goal area and the ball ended up in the net 10 minutes from time to make it 3-1. The Glen stay second in the table, level on points with second place Newtonmore but he Blairbeg side has played a game more.

Lovat reserves top scorer Rory Campbell pulled a goal back on 81 minutes but Donald Fraser completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes later to round off a 4-1 win which takes them to fourth place in the league.

Scott Robertson got his second on 41 minutes to give Inveraray a 3-0 half-time lead. Oban Celtic pulled a goal back on the hour mark when Daniel Madej, who got the derby winner against Lochside last weekend, pulled a goal back to make it 3-1. Alan Mackie made it 3-2 with 20 minutes still remaining but Inveraray saw out the remainder of the game to take the points. The win means that the Inveraray seconds leap-frog Oban Celtic and they top the table ahead of the weekend fixtures.
Taynuilt 2 Inveraray 1 The Inveraray second team were unable to follow up their midweek win over Oban Celtic with another victory as they lost 2-1 to Taynuilt at the Taynuilt Sports Field. Inveraray U17 player Lewis Montgomery gave his side a 20 minute lead. Lorne Gillies equalised on the half-hour mark. The winning goal came 20 minutes from time with Willie Neilson on target. However the win over Oban Celtic four days earlier was enough to leave the Inveraray seconds at the top of the table.
Lochside Rovers 5 Glenorchy 0 The clash between Glenorchy and Lochside Rovers was reversed to Ganavan as Glenorchy’s Mart Park pitch was declared unplayable following a pitch inspection. Chris MacMillan was eligible to play for Lochside but he will not be able to play in next Saturday’s Bullough Cup quarter-final tie against the Kyles Athletic seconds. Glenorchy’s Graham Morrice was banned for a disciplinary points accumulation. Duncan Smith was free to play but he will miss his side’s next match for the same reason. The two points lift Lochside into second place in the league.

Strachur’s Ross MacDonald was free to play but he will miss next weekend’s meeting with Glenorchy because of a bookings points accumulation. Alex Cunningham put Kilmory ahead but a Duncan Scott hat-trick and an Alastair Mirlees effort gave Strachur a 4-1 lead at the break. Kilmory, prompted by forward Johnny Strachan, had more than their fair share of the play in the second half but they were unable to break down the Strachur defence.
