The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 14 June 2014 | |
15 June 2014 There was a mixture of league and cup shinty action on Saturday 14 June 2014.
Artemis Macaulay Cup - Quarter Finals Kingussie 1 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore reached the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi finals as they beat Kingussie 4-1 in their 3pm derby meeting at the Dell. Kingussie started well and Lee Bain spurned a great chance in the opening minutes when he was played in one-on-one with Newtonmore keeper Michael Ritchie. However the Kingussie forward didn’t catch the ball as he would have liked and Ritchie made the save. Newtonmore went ahead on 14 minutes when James Hutchison tried to cut out a high ball into the goal area but the ball came off the top of his stick and looped over keeper Craig Dawson into the net. A fairly even first half ended with Newtonmore 1-0 ahead. However Newtonmore were the better team in the second half. Paul MacArthur made it 2-0 on 54 minutes and Glen MacKintosh added a third on 72 minutes. Louis Munro pulled a goal back for Kingussie on 82 minutes but Glen MacKintosh’s second goal of the afternoon 3 minutes from time rounded of a well-earned 4-1 win.
Lovat 3 Fort William 0 Lovat bounced back from the disappointment of last weekend’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup defeat to Kingussie by beating RBS MacTavish Plate winners Fort William 3-0 at Balgate. Lovat had Greg Matheson back in attack and Owen Ferguson also returned in midfield. Jamie Matheson was also back and he started on the bench. However defenders Drew Howie and Michael MacKenzie missed out – the former because of a motorbike accident and the latter was on holiday. Fort William were missing hamstring victims Stevie Stewart and Gary Innes however Neil Robertson returned following a spell out through injury. Lovat played some good shinty in the first half and their one-touch play was a joy to watch. Their three goals came courtesy on a 17 minute Kevin Bartlett hat-trick. The Scotland forward opened the scoring on 15 minutes and added a second on 22 minutes. Bartlett completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later and Lovat had one foot in the semi finals. The home side never hit the heights in the second half and they suffered a couple of injury scares ahead of Saturday’s RBS MacTavish Cup Final against Glenurquhart at the Bught Park. First Graeme MacMillan had to be replaced by Fraser Gallacher on 63 minutes and 5 minutes later, Greg Matheson limped off with Jamie Matheson coming on in his place.
Glenorchy v Oban Camanachd W/O Oban Camanachd were given a walk-over against Glenorchy. The match was originally scheduled for Mart Park but it failed a pitch inspection. The tie was then transferred to An Aird but Glenorchy, who had three players suspended, were unable to gather a team to travel so Oban Camanachd go through to the last four.
Balliemore Cup – Semi Final Inverness 1 Skye Camanachd 3 The Skye Camanachd first team reached the Balliemore Cup Final for the first time since 2008 with a 3-1 win over Inverness at Battery Park. Neil MacVicar started with Ally “Spod” MacLeod dropping onto the bench. The Islanders went in front on 8 minutes when Kenny Campbell did well to get away from his marker on the right before crossing to Shockie MacLennan who flicked the ball into the air before volleying it into the net. Kenny Campbell turned scorer on 33 minutes as he flicked home a cross from the left. Inverness goalie Stuart MacRae kept his side in the game with a couple of terrific first half saves. Inverness made a strong start to the second half and former Skye player Dougie Rankin sent a drive from the left high into the Skye net to make it 2-1. This meant for a nervy period in the match before, with a just a couple of minutes remaining, Skye substitute David Grant got the deftest of touches onto a free-hit and fellow substitute Kenny MacLeod crashed the ball past Stuart MacRae to make it 3-1. Skye now await the outcome of next weekend’s semi final meeting between Aberdour and Ballachulish. The 2014 Balliemore Final will take place at The Taynuilt Playing Field on Saturday 12 July 2014.

Strathdearn Plate - Quarter Finals Beauly 4 Lochaber 1 (after extra time) It took extra time to separate Beauly and Lochaber before the home side ran out 4-1 winners at Braeview Park. Beauly had Kenneth MacKenzie back in the side but Dougie Blaine and Willie Ferguson were out through injury. Beauly’s first team manager continued in defence. Lochaber manager Ally Ferguson named himself amongst his side’s substitutes. There were few shots on target during the regulation 90 minutes and with neither team able to break the deadlock, referee David Stafford took the tie to extra time. Beauly had enjoyed most of the pressure and they took the lead on 94 minutes when youngster Robbie Brindle netted with a sweet 20 yard drive. The young Lochaber side’s response was immediate and they drew level within 60 seconds when Conor Sweeney powered the ball home. The second half was just a minute old when Beauly went back in front. Player / manager Stephen MacLean played the ball to Jamie MacLennan and he held up the ball before turning and crashing it into the net to make it 2-1. This time there was no Lochaber fight-back and Neil Brindle slammed home a rebound on 114 minutes to make it 3-1. Ross Forbes finished off a good move when he scored from the edge of the D a couple of minutes from time to make it 4-1 and seal a place in the semi finals.
Kingussie 6 Caberfeidh 0 Kingussie were too strong for an under-strength Caberfeidh side in their 5.30pm throw up at the Dell. Ronald Ross returned in defence for the home side and veteran Kevin Thain hit an early double on 3 and 17 minutes to put the Kings two goals to the good. Then Kingussie’s crop of youngsters took over. James Falconer made it 3-0 on 19 minutes and Roddy Young added a fourth on 35 minutes to make it 4-0 at the break. With the weather conditions making it difficult for both sets of players, Savio Genini made it 5-0 on 69 minutes and Chris Hollysong rounded off a 6-0 win on 79 minutes.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 1 Kinlochshiel 0 Inveraray are one of shinty’s form teams at present and they recorded another victory as they beat Kinlochshiel 1-0 at the Winterton. Alan MacDonald returned for the home side after serving a two game ban and he put in a solid performance at full back. Kinlochshiel were missing John MacRae whilst Finlay MacRae was deployed in defence. Inveraray had most of the game and ‘Shiel keeper Scott Kennedy made four or five great saves throughout the match. Chris Crawford did manage to beat Kennedy but his shot came off the crossbar. It looked as if the visitors were going to snatch a point but the winning goal came just 9 minutes from time. A Ruairidh Graham corner to the back post was missed by the ‘Shiel defence. Inveraray full centre David Robertson had made a lung-bursting run from the middle of the park and he managed to get to the ball before hitting a daisy cutter into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0. Inveraray deserved their win and with players now back from injury, there is real competition for places in the side for the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final in a fortnight’s time.
Lochaber 1 Glenurquhart 2 Lochaber’s relegation fears worsened as they lost 2-1 to Glenurquhart in their 3.30pm throw up at Spean Bridge.
