Skye reserves Suffer Heavy Balgate Defeat – Lovat 6 Skye Camanachd 0 | |
03 March 2013 The Skye Camanachd second team went down to a 6-0 defeat in their opening Marine Harvest North Division 2 fixture against Lovat at Balgate on Saturday 2 March 2013. This was always going to be a tough fixture for Skye in what was Graham MacMillan’s first competitive match in charge of the Lovat reserves, who beat Fort William 6-0 in a pre-season friendly last weekend. MacMillan was without Jimmy MacKenzie so Alan MacPherson started at full back. Visiting manager Murdo Morrison was forced to include Stewart Grant as a substitute for this 2.30pm throw up even although he was carrying an injury. Lovat got off to a great start and took the lead after just 2 minutes when they broke through the Skye defence and visiting full back David Grant was left two on one. As Grant moved forward to halt the attack, the ball was slipped to Fraser Gallacher who fired home to make it 1-0. Lovat’s second goal came on 38 minutes when a Fraser Gallacher snap-shot came back off the post and Graeme MacMillan produced a lovely finish as he swept the rebound into the Skye net on the half-volley. Indeed MacMillan was lightning-quick in the Lovat wing forward position and he caused the Skye defence problems all afternoon. Skye buck-shee back Jack Latton was injured in the lead up to the second goal and he was replaced by Stewart Grant. Lovat effectively sealed the points on the stroke of half time when a well struck shot from substitute Rory Campbell nestled in the back of the Skye net. A bullet shot from Lewis Tawse, who played for the Lovat first team in Portree a week earlier, gave Aonghas MacDonald no chance as he made it 4-0 on 52 minutes. Tawse was involved in Lovat’s fifth goal too as he broke into the Skye D only to be upended by keeper Aonghas MacDonald and referee Al Hunter had little alternative but to point to the penalty spot. Aonghas MacDonald was booked for his part and Fraser Gallacher despatched the spot-hit for his second goal of the afternoon with 75 minutes played. Lovat’s final goal was the pick of the bunch as Lewis Tawse sent and unstoppable backhand shot past MacDonald to make it 6-0 on 85 minutes. Skye had five players yellow carded by referee Al Hunter. Joining keeper Aonghas MacDonald in the referee’s book were John Angus MacInnes, Magnus Burd, Stewart Grant and Chris MacLennan who was particularly unfortunate as even the Lovat players pleaded that his offence was a case of mistaken identity. Lovat have a much improved second string compared to last term and Graham MacMillan’s side will be a match for any team in reserve shinty. Magnus Burd was the pick of the Skye squad in what was a disappointing day for the Islanders.
