Skye Camanachd Retain Johnstone Rose Bowl - UPDATED! | |
02 February 2015 Skye Camanachd Ladies made a successful start to the 2015 shinty season as they retained the Johnstone Rose Bowl after an exciting day’s shinty at the Nevis Centre, Fort William on Saturday 31 January 2015. Skye Camanachd Ladies were holders having won the annual five-a-side tournament in 2014 and they travelled with a first team as well as a younger side with an eye to the future. It was a snowy drive to Fort William in wintery conditions and the two Skye teams joined Badenoch & Strathspey, Glengarry A, Glengarry B, Lochaber, Oban Lorne A, Oban Lorne B, Strathglass A, Strathglass B and the clubs were split into two leagues of five teams. Badenoch made a good start in League 1, winning their first two games 6-0. They followed that up with 2-0 and 5-1 victories to top the group. Glengarry A finished in second place with Skye Camanachd B a credible third. Skye Camanachd A topped League 2 with wins over Glengarry B, Oban Lorne A, Strathglass A and a 3-1 victory over Laura Macintyre’s Lochaber side. However wins over Glengarry B 1-0, Oban Lorn A 2-0 and Strathglass A 5-0 ensured the Spean Bridge side finished in second place. The semi-final line-up saw Badenoch face Lochaber Skye Camanachd A faced Glengarry A. In the first semi-final, Lochaber managed to hold off a strong Badenoch side to progress to the final. The game swung back and forth and looked like either team could have won it but Lochaber held out to win 5-3 in the end. The second semi-final was just as close. Skye took an early lead but Glengarry fought back hard to take a 3-1 lead. However they withdrew Laura Gallacher at half time and Skye took advantage to come back and win 5-4. So the 2015 Johnston Rose Bowl Final brought together Lochaber, captained by Kirsty Delaney and Skye Camanachd A, captained by Roz Lamond. Both teams started off with caution with neither wanting to give the other any room to create opportunities. Lochaber fought hard to keep Skye danger-women Lorna MacRae at bay whilst Missi Cameron, who scored six goals on the day and Rebecca Stafford with three strikes, gave Lochaber a real goal threat. However it was Scottish international Lorna MacRae who proved to be the difference, scoring four of the Islanders goals, with player / manager Sarah Corrigall getting the other in a 5-1 win. Skye captain Roz Lamond received the Johnstone Rose Bowl from Mrs Alisa Johnston and her delighted team mates were presented with their medals. Skye rounded off a successful day when Lorna MacRae was named Player of the Tournament as she was a year earlier. The Skye squads were as follows: Skye Camanachd Ladies A from: Sarah Corrigall, Roz Lamond, Nicola MacSween, Caitlin Maclean, Emma Gordon, Lorna MacRae, Jenna Beaton Skye Camanachd Ladies B from: Katie Lamond, Korri Henderson, Izzy Law, Ilana Paterson, Kirsty Dibble, Fiona Lamond, Christina MacDonald The Johnstone Rose Bowl was donated to the Glengarry Girls Shinty Club in 1998 (a year after the team was formed) by Mrs Ailsa Johnstone of DA Johnstone & Son Contractors, Invergarry. This was the 18th year of the oldest competition in the women’s game. Hosts Glengarry thanked Mrs Ailsa Johnston for her continued sponsorship; the referees on the day for their great work; and all of the teams for making the journey to compete and make the day such a success. |
