Skye Camanachd 2012 Player of the Year Awards | |
04 February 2013 The Skye Camanachd 2012 Player of the Year Awards were announced at the club’s Annual Dinner Dance at the Skye Camanachd Clubhouse on Saturday 2 February 2013. The Skye Camanachd Player of the Year awards were made by Glen Edge from new club sponsors Vattenfall, who previously sponsored the Skye Camanachd U17 team.
Skye Camanachd First Team Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd First Team Player of the Year Award was shared between Steven Morrison and Chris Rose. Skye Camanachd Chairman Willie MacRae said, “There were several good performers in the first team last season, including Shockie MacLennan and Neil MacVicar. However Stevie and Crick really stood out, and they are outstanding leaders on the field of play.”
Skye Camanachd Second Team Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd Second Team Player of the Year Award went to Paul MacKinnon. Skye Camanachd Chairman Willie MacRae said, “Paul is a really talented player who adds a lot to the team. He could go on to be a top player if we could just keep him in on a Friday night.”
Skye Camanachd Ladies Team Player of the Year Scotland senior cap Lorna MacRae was named Skye Camanachd Ladies Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Eoghan Stewart said, “Lorna deserves this award but there have been other notable performers in the team such as Jenna Beaton, Caitlin MacLean and captain Roz Lamond. However, Lorna scored on her Scotland debut in Ireland and if she applies herself, she has all the qualities to be one of the best Ladies players in Scotland.”
Skye Camanachd Ladies Most Improved Player of the Year This award went to Ilana Paterson who played in goal for the team last season and was chosen to play for the North of Scotland U18 team. Eoghan Stewart said, “Ilana is probably the best all round player at the club. She has sacrificed her outfield role to go between the posts when the team needed goalie and I think this award recognises how she has improved as a keeper.”
Skye Camanachd Ladies Most Promising Player of the Year This award went to Helen Lamond and Eoghan Stewart said, “Helen is already a good player but she has the potential to become a great player. She is a real character and a popular member of the team.”
Former Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Eoghan Stewart gave a speech to acknowledge how far the team had progressed over the last two years and the ladies awards were presented by Hermoine Lamond from club sponsors Glasnakille Plant Hire. A special award was made to Marion Gillies for her contribution to the team over the last season.
Skye Camanachd U17 Team Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd U17 Player of the Year Award went to Iain “Spod” MacLeod. Skye Camanachd Youth Coach Davie MacVicar said, “This award was voted for by the U17 players and there were six players nominated. I think Iain fancied himself as a forward at the start of the season but he was a stand-out when he moved to full back, He was rewarded when he made his second team debut during the season.”
Skye Camanachd U14 A Team Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd U14 A Player of the Year award went to Caitlin MacLean. Youth Coach John MacLeod said, “This award was one of the most difficult to choose. There were some good individual performances throughout the season which made the voting it a tight affair. It was a very close one to call amongst the players also. In the end Caitlin edged it from the rest with some consistent performances. She has played in defence for the A team but can play in most of the positions, making her a very versatile player in the Squad. Caitlin’s performances in the U14s and in the Ladies game brought her recognition in 2012 when she was selected for the North of Scotland U18 side. She has a great attitude and application to the game, to fellow players and to the club coaches.”
Skye Camanachd U14 A Most Improved Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd U14 A team Most Improved Player of the Year award went to Connor Ross. Youth Coach John MacLeod said, “Connor came back to shinty at the start of 2012 after a bit of self-imposed absence from the game. He quickly began to get back into the way of it at training and finding his way again. He played mostly in attack last season and contributed some fine and important goals for the A team. He is a bit of a character in the squad always has a smile on his face and always has a reply for you! The 2013 season could be a big year for Connor if he continues in the form he had last year.”
Skye Camanachd U14 B Team Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd U14 B team Player of the Year award went to Marcus Ross. Youth Coach John MacLeod said, “This choice of recipient for the B Team Player of the Year award was a popular one amongst fellow players. As well as playing in the Development Team, Marcus eventually became a regular in the A team, turning out some good all round performances in defence. If he continues his application to the game he will have a bright future ahead in shinty.”
Skye Camanachd U14 B Most Improved Player of the Year The Skye Camanachd U14 B team Most Improved Player of the Year award went to Ross Nicolson. Youth Coach John MacLeod said, “Again, this award was a difficult choice as the Development team only played two rounds of games last season. There were four players who came through from the primary school system last year who were involved in the U14 set up – Ross Nicolson, Angus MacDonald, Stewart Taylor and Ruaraidh MacLeod - and they all acquitted themselves well, not only in the B team but also with some appearances in the A Team. Ross shaded it ahead of the rest with some fine performances both in defence and attack.” |
