Portree Primary School Are 2016 RBS P7 (& under) National First Shinty Festival Champions - UPDATED! | |
01 March 2016 Portree Primary School won the 2016 RBS P7 (& under) National First Shinty Festival, and Kyleakin reached the semi-finals at the Nevis Centre, Fort William on Saturday 27 February 2016. Portree and Kyleakin were the Skye qualifiers and the teams were drawn into two leagues for this noon start. The top two teams would qualify for the semi-finals. League A Portree were drawn in League A against Bute, Inverlochy, Kilmory, Plockton, Strathkelvin and Tarradale. Portree beat Tarradale 3-0, Plockton 5-0, Kilmory 2-0, Strathkelvin 3-0, Bute 3-1 and Kyleakin 2-0 before losing 2-0 to Inverlochy. This meant Portree were League A winners whilst Glasgow Gaels joined them in the semi-finals as runners up. Kyleakin defeated Ardnamurchan 4-1 before losing 5-2 to Newtonmore. There was then a long wait before they beat Dingwall 1-0 and Inverness 3-0. Kyleakin lost 2-0 to Glasgow Gaels before sealing second place in the league with a 4-0 win over Rockfield. Glasgow Gaels were League B winners. Portree were through to the final but Kyleakin also did superbly well, especially considering they were taking part with a school role of only 22 pupils. Click on the following link to see Portree play Kyleakin Bute defeated Glasgow Gaels 4-1 in the second semi-final to make it an all-Island final. Click on the link to see Bute play Glasgow Gaels Final The final between Portree and Bute was a closer affair than the scoreline suggests. However some fine goalkeeping from Calum Nicolson and some deadly finishing in front of goal gave Portree a 4-1 victory. Portree started well and captain Taylor Matheson led from the front with two good goals. Bute pulled a goal back before Taylor Matheson completed his hat-trick. Taylor Matheson clinched the win with his and Portree’s fourth goal of the final. RBS Branch Manager Janet Richardson presented the RBS P7 (& under) trophy to Portree captain Taylor Matheson.
