Kinlochshiel 3 Skye Camanachd 2 | |
09 September 2018 The Skye Camanachd second team manager led 2-0 before eventually losing out 3-2 in their Marine Harvest Marine Harvest North Division 1 match against the Kinlochshiel second team at Kirkton on Saturday 8 September 2018. This was the teams’ fourth meeting of the season; with Skye coming out on top in the three previous games. Kinlochshiel manager Willie MacRae was able to include Colin MacDiarmid, Sandy MacDiarmid as well as 13-year olds Archie MacRae and Callum Coghill with the latter starting on the bench. There was a place in attack for the more experienced Scott MacLean. Skye manager Kenny MacLeod was forced to make eleven changes from the side which beat Aberdeen University a fortnight earlier. There were debuts for youngsters Taylor Matheson and Archie MacDonald and Iain Murray returned following a knee injury. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up to mark the passing of Dougie Gill, brother of Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill, and Skye Camanachd stalwart Ally “Mor” Morrison. Skye, shooting up the hill, got off to a great start as Angie MacDonald blasted the ball home from the left of the D on 4 minutes. Angie MacDonald got his and Skye’s second just a minute later. Some great play from Cameron MacKay on the Skye right wing set up the chance and MacDonald blasted the ball high into the net from around the penalty spot. ‘Shiel could have folded but Lewis MacVicar got them back into the game on 25 minutes when he scored from outside the D on the ‘Shiel left. With the Skye defence backing off, Scott MacLean took advantage as he fired a 28 yard shot from a central position high into the net to make it 2-2 on 35 minutes. Skye goalie Ryan Morrison made a good double- save, first with his hand to keep out a Scott MacLean shot and then with his feet from close-range as Lewis MacVicar got onto the rebound and Skye got the ball away for a shy. Archie MacRae went close from the resultant shy but the teams went into the break on level terms. There were few chances in the second half but Finlay MacRae scored what proved to be the winning goal on 65 minutes. Some good play from Andrew MacKenzie saw the ball played forward to Scott MacLean who tangled with John Angus MacInnes, who was now at full back for Skye. MacLean managed to slip the ball from the right to Finlay MacRae and he scored from inside the D with the ball going high into the net off keeper Ryan Morrison. Iain Murray sent a shot over the junction between post and bar as Skye went for an equaliser but it wasn’t to be. The win was important for Willie MacRae’s ‘Shiel side as it takes them away from the relegation zone. The game was refereed by 2018 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final match official Deek Cameron.
