31 July 2017 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 1-0 to Aberdeen University in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 match at Balgownie on Saturday 29 July 2017. Skye Camanachd second team manager Kenny MacLeod made three changes to fourteen-man squad which lost their league meeting with the Newtonmore seconds a week earlier. David MacInnes, Shockie MacLennan and Calum Robertson dropped out and Connor Gilpin, Calum Gibb, Daniel Morrison and Ally “Spod” MacLeod came in. David Fraser was missing for the home side as he served a one-game ban for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Throw up was scheduled for 2.30pm but the game didn’t start until just after 3pm. The delay came about as the grass on the Balgownie pitch had not been cut. Referee David Mitchell gave the hosts the chance to cut and strim the grass on areas of the pitch. Both sides agreed to proceed with the match with Skye keen to get the game played after travelling such a long distance. The only goal of the game came on 18 minutes. As the Aberdeen side worked the ball down the wing, the Skye defence stopped claiming the ball was out of play. David Duncan played the ball on and it landed at Gregor Cushnie’s feet and he hit it low into the net from the edge of the D. Skye were furious but referee Mitchell waved away their appeals. The difficulty posed by the long grass was emphasised when, after the goal was scored, Skye keeper Ryan Morrison hit the ball into the midfield area ahead of the restart. However such was the length of the grass, the ball could not be found. The referee restarted the match with a new ball and Skye wing centre Sam MacPhee accidently came across the original ball several minutes later. The game was feisty at times and Skye were particularly unhappy with an incident that occurred in the lead up to a yellow card for John Angus MacInnes.
