Kilmallie 1 Skye Camanachd 0 | |
03 August 2011 Skye Camanachd went down 1-0 to Kilmallie in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at the Canal parks on Saturday 16 July 2011. Skye manager Davie MacVicar made six changes to the squad which lost to Kingussie in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup semi final the previous weekend. Keeper Ross Graham was unavailable so captain John MacLeod took over in goal for this 12 noon throw up. Defender Martin Bruce was ruled out with a groin injury and Ally MacDonald and John Mackenzie were on first team duty. Shaun Hedley was working and Stewart Grant was unavailable. However into the side came Aonghas MacDonald who started at full forward and Ally MacLeod came off the bench to take up Bruce’s place in defence. Iain MacLellan was also back after injury. U17 player Angie MacPherson and manager MacVicar were also included in the squad. Kilmallie included first team keeper Kevin Toye in their line-up as they sought the two points which would take them off the bottom of the table at Skye’s expense. Skye started well and Toye was immediately called into action when he saved well from Aonghas MacDonald. Moments later Jordan Murchison set up Aonghas MacDonald and he shot narrowly wide of target. At the other end, Seb MacMillan crashed an aerial volley just past the Skye goal. Skye lost defender Scott MacLeod with a head cut and he headed for the Belford Hospital to have a couple of stitches inserted to the wound. Allan MacKinnon played in Aonghas MacDonald but he was again denied by Toye. Kilmallie responded and Nick Lavin played in Seb MacMillan but Skye keeper John MacLeod was equal to his effort. Aonghas MacDonald got on the end of a Skye corner but his shot hit the frame of the Kilmallie goal. The rebound fell for Andrew Grant but Kevin Toye made a superb reflex save from the youngster’s shot. A long ball from David Grant allowed Aonghas MacDonald to shoot goalwards but he was again foiled by Toye. This was turning out to be a personal dual between Aonghas MacDonald and keeper Toye and the Kilmallie man thwarted the Skye full forward again when he got on the end of a Mark Mortimer shy. Kilmallie had their best spell at the start of the second half. They made this pressure count on 50 minutes when a Mark Graham shot from distance flew into the Skye net to put the home side 1-0 ahead. Graham was also to score for the Kilmallie first team later in the afternoon. Skye piled the pressure on the Kilmallie goal in the last 15 minutes and the closest they came was when Aonghas MacDonald slipped the ball to Jordan Murchison but his strike came off the post. The young Skye side, with nine players aged seventeen or under, showed up well but they were just unable to beat Kevin Toye in the Kilmallie goal. The Kilmallie management praised the Islanders contribution to the game and they were generous enough to admit that Skye deserved to take at least a point from the game.
