Skye Camanachd 6 Kinlochshiel 2 | |
15 August 2011 Skye Camanachd beat Kinlochshiel 6-2 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 13 August 2011. Skye manager Davie MacVicar made four changes from the squad which beat Lovat 4-0 a fortnight earlier. Keeper Ross Graham, Shaun Hedley, Ally MacLeod and Magnus Burd all dropped out of the squad. Defender Martin Bruce failed a late fitness test but MacVicar was still able to field a strong side with Iain Nicolson coming into the defence and captain John MacLeod returning in goal. Stewart Grant started in midfield whilst Paul MacKinnon dropped onto the bench where he was joined by Danny Morrison, Stewart Grant and Mark Mortimer. Kinlochshiel were without Colin MacDiarmid following his red card against Fort William last week and Michael Morrison. The throw up was delayed by 15 minutes when the allocated referee did not appear so both sides agreed that Skye Camanachd first team manager Aonghas MacDonald could referee the game. Skye attacked straight from the throw up and ‘Shiel keeper Iain Cameron did well to stretch and stop a Will Cowie shot with his hand. Skye went 1-0 in front after 21 minutes. David Grant played in a low cross from the right which found Ally MacDonald bursting forward. MacDonald timed his run perfectly to avoid being caught off-side and he gave Cameron no chance with a crisp finish. Iain Cameron made a good save with his feet from Will Cowie after 29 minutes. Some super individual play from Jordan Murchison created a chance on 31 minutes but Iain Cameron made a great save. The ball spun in the air and Ally MacDonald just failed to make contact with the rebound. Jordan Murchison was proving a real handful for the visiting defence with some neat flicks and quick passing and he played a one-two with David Grant after 35 minutes before shooting low into the net to make it 2-0 to the Islanders. Kinlochshiel manager Colin Fraser introduced Scott Kennedy in place of Stewart MacRae. Iain Cameron made a brilliant double save after 37 minutes when he first foiled Jordan Murchison and the Ally MacDonald. It would have been easy for ‘Shiel to fold at this stage but they showed their mettle by attacking Skye and they pulled a goal back on 40 minutes when Scott Kennedy showed great determination to knock the ball over the line after a deep free-hit led to a goalmouth scramble. ‘Shiel sensed they could level the game before the half time interval and Ross Fraser shot just wide a minute later. Skye keeper John MacLeod raced from his goal after 44 minutes to deny Ronan Taylor. However Shiel drew level on the stroke of half time. Allan MacDiarmid got on the end of a loose ball and he whipped a shot past John MacLeod to make it 2-2 at the break. Skye manager Davie MacVicar introduced Danny Morrison in place of David Grant at the start of the second half and Morrison’s introduction was to prove significant. Mark Mortimer came on in place of Allan MacKinnon who picked up an ankle knock. Danny Morrison played a long ball down the right on 56 minutes. Will Cowie collected possession near the corner flag and crossed into the danger area. Jordan Murchison let the ball run and it looked like the ‘Shiel defence might clear. However Danny Morrison showed great persistence to win the ball and tuck it into the back of the net to put Skye 3-2 in front. Iain Cameron palmed a bouncing ball from Danny Morrison away for the safety of a corner a minute later. Will Cowie fired in a fantastic backhand shot after 58 minutes when he collected a Darryl Macintosh pass but the ball was deflected for a corner. A really good effort from Ronan Taylor flew across the Skye goal after 63 minutes. Danny Morrison put Skye 4-2 up on 64 minutes with his second strike. Will Cowie saw his initial shot blocked by Donald Nixon but Cowie managed to fire the ball into the goal area and Danny Morrison reacted first to score. Will Cowie closed down a ‘Shiel clearance after 66 minutes but Iain Cameron palmed away Cowie’s backhand snap-shot. Skye keeper John MacLeod had to race from his goal to clear a long Ronan Taylor ball after 68 minutes. Kinlochshiel introduced Oliver MacRae in place of Sandy MacDiarmid after 69 minutes and he was tasked with marking Jordan Murchison. Skye took David Grant back on at full back after 71 minutes with Neil MacVicar pushing into midfield and Stewart Grant coming off. Referee Aonghas MacDonald had a word in the ear of Mark Mortimer and Duncan Ach MacRae after a midfield clash on 72 minutes. Skye went 5-2 up after 75 minutes following a quick passing move which cut through the Shiel defence. Iain Nicolson started the move when he picked up a loose ball in midfield and spread a pass out to Jordan Murchison on the Skye left. Murchison cut the ball back to Darryl Macintosh and he found Danny Morrison. He found Jordan Murchison who exchanged passes with Ally MacDonald before Murchison fired in a low shot and the ball kicked off the surface past keeper Cameron into the net. John MacLeod made a good save with his legs from Allan MacDiarmid after 77 minutes and David Grant cleared the ball. Skye went 6-2 up after 78 minutes following another great passing move. Danny Morrison played the ball to Will Cowie and he swept a backhand pass to Jordan Murchison who found Ally MacDonald at the edge of the D on the Skye left and he kept his composure to slot the ball into the net for his second goal of the game. Iain MacLellan came on for the final 10 minutes to give Jordan Murchison a well-earned break. John MacLeod saved well from Scott Kennedy in the closing minutes. Kinlochshiel forced a couple of late corners with Duncan Ach MacRae and Scott Kennedy in the thick of the action. The last chance fell for Skye and Will Cowie’s backhand shot rose just over the bar. Skye had several top performers including Iain Nicolson, Ally MacDonald, Will Cowie and man of the match Jordan Murchison. Danny Morrison made big second half contribution. Kinlochshiel were well served by keeper Iain Cameron, buckshee back Donald Nixon and Ronan Taylor in midfield. Aonghas MacDonald did a great job as stand-in referee although the match was played in good spirits.
