Glengarry 5 Skye Camanachd 0. | |
24 April 2011 A young Skye Camanachd second team went down to a 5-0 league defeat to Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry at Invergarry on Saturday 16 April 2011. With Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie MacVicar on holiday, assistant manager Murdo Morrison and coach Willie MacRae looked after the side. The duo were forced to make six changes to the squad which beat Fort William the previous weekend in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup. Keeper Jamie Gannon, midfielders Scott Martin and Daniel Morrison and forward Paul MacKinnon were all unavailable whilst Jordan Murchison and Ally MacDonald were called up to the first team. Ross Graham came in between the sticks and there was a recall for Ally MacLeod. The squad was supplemented by the inclusion of U14 players Iain MacLeod, Angie Grant and Andrew Grant who joined their U14 team-mate Will Cowie in the travelling party. The management team of Willie MacRae and Murdo Morrison were added to the list of substitutes. Skye had five Grants in their squad. Brothers Stewart Grant, Iain Grant and Angie Grant were joined by their cousins Andrew Grant and David Grant, who as the elder statesman of the five players. Glengarry were along usual lines although they were missing Matthew Clark. Skye started with a two–two formation in attack with Andrew Grant making his first start at second team level. Skye had to make a change after just 5 minutes when defender Scott MacLeod suffered a hamstring problem and he had to be replaced by Willie MacRae. Angie Grant was also involved in the early stages as he replaced Ally MacLeod who had taken a knock. One of Grant’s first acts in the game was to put in a terrific block on a burly ‘Garry defender which shattered the Skye youngster’s caman. When Grant ran to the touchline for a replacement caman, all the sticks in the bag were too big for him! Skye keeper Ross Graham made a fantastic one-handed save following a rocket shot from Glengarry forward Ewan Brady. The home side had a great chance to take the lead when Skye keeper Ross Graham was penalised by referee Graeme MacMillan for playing the ball when on the ground. However Graham redeemed himself when he made a great save with his foot from Ewan Brady’s well struck spot-hit. Just when it looked as if Skye would get to the interval all-square, ‘Garry took the lead when John MacKinnon fired into the net on 42 minutes. Worse was to follow for Skye when ‘Garry’s Martin Cameron made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Skye tried to regroup at the break but they were dealt a hammer-blow at the start of the second half when Steven Cameron, who had been well marked by Iain Grant all afternoon, made it 3-0. The young Skye side continued to battle well but goals from Scott Johnstone on 55 minutes and Arran Clark on 77 minutes gave the home side a 5-0 victory. Skye were well served by Iain Grant and the U14 quartet of Will Cowie, Angie Grant, Andrew Grant and Iain MacLeod can be pleased with their performances.
