Memory Lane – Season 1989 / 90 – Part 28 | |
11 December 2010 North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 6 Kinlochshiel 0 With both a Camanachd Cup first round victory against Lovat and a MacTavish Cup semi final win over Beauly under their belts since their last league outing, it was a confident Skye Camanachd side which took the lead against North Division 1 bottom team Kinlochshiel at the King George V Park. It was Shiel who made the brighter start and they had Skye pinned back for the opening 5 minutes of the game. Skye gradually got into the game and it was the home side which now looked the likelier to get the opening goal. And they did just that after 13 minutes when referee Brian Davis awarded the home side a penalty. Willie Cowie stepped up and blasted the ball into the net. Shiel responded and Skye keeper John “Bodach” MacKenzie saved well from Iain Campbell. Skye went 2-0 up when a great ball from Caley Maclean was intelligently dummied by Willie MacKinnon and Andy MacLean darted in to net his second goal in two league games. Shiel keeper Donnie Callander made a great save from John MacRae to limit Skye to a two goal advantage at the break. Just as they did in the first half, Shiel started the second half well and a shot from Neilie “Ach” MacRae whistle just past the Skye post. Shiel brought on Johnston Gill, who made his return from a long spell out through injury. He replaced Johnny MacRae in a bid to inject some shooting power into the visitor’s attack. However it was Skye who threatened next and Callander saved well from Willie Cowie before stopping a 40 yard piledriver from Peter Gordon. Skye continued to press and Willie Cowie converted a half chance in front of goal to put Skye 3-0 ahead. The low sun was making things difficult for Shiel keeper Donnie Callander and he was caught out twice in a couple of minutes as Skye surged into a 5-0 lead. First Callander lost the flight of the ball as a 30 yard looping hit from Andy MacLean dropped just under the crossbar. Then the Shiel keeper tried to palm away a shot from distance from Caley MacLean but he only succeeded in turning the ball into his own net. Skye manager Ross Cowie introduced Calum Murchison and John “Slippy” Finlayson in place of Willie MacKinnon and Ally “Stenscholl” MacDonald and the subs were hardly on the pitch when John MacRae made it 6-0 after a superb mazy run from full centre Caley MacLean. Shiel finished with a flourish and John “Bodach” MacKenzie made a good stop from Iain Campbell and a Johnny “Ach” MacRae drive flew just wide of the target. Shiel brought on Darkie Fraser for Graham MacRae at the end but it was league leaders Skye who ran out 6-0 winners. As well as the goal scorers, Skye were well served by Donnie “Digg” MacDonald in defence. However a stiff test lay just around the corner as Skye’s next league outing was a trip to Claggan Park to play Fort William. Title rivals Kingussie also had a good 4-0 win against Caberfeidh at Castle Leod. In the other match played in North Division 1, Beauly were 2-1 winners over Newtonmore at Braeview Park. |
