Memory Lane – Season 1986 / 87 – Part 2. | |
24 November 2009 Saturday 6 September 1986 - North Division 1 – Kingussie 5 Skye Camanachd 6 A trip to the Dell is a daunting task at the best of times. Skye set off on the Saturday morning after celebrating the wedding of on of their players – Duncan MacDougall – the day before. Most of the team attended the wedding and it was to their credit that they showed no ill effects the following day. Skye started well and made a couple of early attacks. However when the Islanders went 2 goals down to a couple of Dave Borthwick strikes within the first 15 minutes of the match, few gave them any chance of returning home with even a point against the league’s reigning champions. After 20 minutes, Skye buckshee forward Peter Gordon, who had returned to the side following a spell with Aberdeen Camanachd, played in Willie MacKinnon and he celebrated his first team debut by blasting the ball into the roof of the Kingussie net to reduce the deficit. Moments later player / manager Calum Murchison fired a 25 yard shot low past Rab Muir to level the game at 2-2. Skye’s first half recovery was complete just before the break when Peter Gordon crashed an unstoppable 30 yard effort into the net. Shorty Murchison almost marked his return to the side with a goal early in the second half but Muir saved well. However the Skye wing forward was not to be denied and he made the score 4-2 to the visitors just minutes later. Willie MacKinnon scored his second to make it 5-2 and it was a trademark MacKinnon goal as he reacted first to a rebound off Muir to knock the ball into the back of the net. However Kingussie had no intention of collapsing and 2 more quick-fire Dave Borthwick goals took his personal tally to 4 and brought the score back to 5-4 in Skye’s favour. Skye then scored the goal of the match. Duncan MacDougall played in Shorty Murchison and he quickly slipped the ball to Peter Gordon. The ball was quickly played round the forwards as Gordon passed to Willie MacKinnon who found Murchison and his perfectly timed ball allowed Peter Gordon, who had continued his run, to crash the ball past Muir to make it 6-4 in favour of the visitors. Kingussie piled on the pressure but the Skye defence, for whom newcomers Ally “Stenscholl” MacDonald and Willie “Winkie” MacKenzie were particularly impressive, stayed firm. Dave Borthwick rounded off a productive personal performance with his and Kingussie’s 5th at the end but Skye held on to clinch the points and get their season off to the best possible start. A home match against Glenurquhart was next up for Skye. |
