Kingussie talisman Ronald Ross was pipped to the amateur sport award at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Sports Awards. 

The ceremony took place at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow and winners included Sir Alex Ferguson, Chris Hoy, and Andy Murray. The event was also attended by First Minister Alec Salmond as 550 guests celebrated excellence in Scotland’s sportsmen, women and teams during 2008.

Ross was short listed in the amateur sportsperson category along with golfer Callum MacAulay and motor racing’s Carol Brown who became the first female champion in Scottish motorsport after her win at Knockhill race track in Fife against male drivers.

Callum MacAulay was the eventual winner which capped a successful year for the 24 year old Tulliallan golfer. He won the Scottish Amateur Championship and played a key role in the three-man side which took the World Amateur Team Championships crown in Australia.
