Portree High School To Host Highland Schools Girl’s Event. | |
04 October 2008 Nine teams will play in the second round of the inaugural Highland Schools Girl’s shinty league which will be hosted by Portree High School at Skye Camanachd’s Pàirc nan Laoch on Wednesday 8th October, starting at 12 noon.
Portree High School will have 3 teams and the other high schools in attendance will be Lochaber, Kingussie, Dingwall, Ardnamurchan, Plockton and Kinlochleven. Favourites for the competition will be Lochaber and Kingussie, both finalists at the last tournament in Inverness but the Portree girls will be hoping that not having to make the usual long distance to competition will give them an advantage on home soil. “It’s excellent to see so many girls taking part in shinty.” said Wilma MacRuary, Portree’s Head of PE. “We are delighted to be hosting the competition.” Eoghan Stewart has been coaching shinty for the girls since coming to the school last year and now has a pool of 40 to 50 girls taking part at least once a week. He is hopeful that Skye will soon have its own ladies team. “The potential for women’s shinty in the Island is astonishing and hopefully we can find a way to provide a senior outlet for the girls in the near future. Anyone interested in supporting women’s shinty can contact me at the school or via the club.” Games will be 8 a-side with rolling subs and will last 10 minutes each way. There will be three more rounds after the Christmas holidays, although the next host school has yet to be decided.
The competition is being run under the auspices of the Women’s Camanachd Association. |
