Women’s Camanachd Association Announce 2012 Women’s International Coaches | |
16 May 2012 The Women’s Camanachd Association has announced the 2012 Women’s International Coaches for the forthcoming Shinty / Camogie clash in County Clare in October 2012. The Women’s International Coaches will be Sarah Corrigall and Laura MacKay and they will coach and manage a squad of 20 players who face strong Irish opposition as they look to build on the winning success of 2011. Sarah Corrigall from Skye continues into her second year in the post after assisting Andy Mathie from Glasgow last year. She will be joined by seasoned Glengarry and Scotland defender Laura MacKay who replaces Andy Mathie. Sarah Corrigall has played youth and second team shinty for Skye Camanachd before establishing herself as one of the top players in Womens shinty for Glengarry. She has five Scottish caps and was the youngest women’s player ever to make her international debut. She commented, “I am very happy that Laura has joined the coaching team this year. She has been involved in all but one year of the International ties so she knows the set up very well.” Laura MacKay has seven Scottish caps to her name and has coached the Women’s U18 North team. She is excited about being more involved after playing in the representative matches for so many years. She added, “Sarah and I have known each other and played shinty together for over eight years now so we will make a good team and work very well together” Preparations for 2012 selection commence on Sunday 20 May 2012 with the first open training session which is being held in Perth. There will be a series of three open training sessions and all women’s players across Scotland are invited. Following these sessions, the coaching team will select a squad of 20 players in July 2012. Sarah Corrigall is expecting a good turnout for the first training session this Sunday. “There were a large number who tried out for the team last year and I anticipate the same if not more this year as there are so many players now coming into Women’s Shinty thanks to the good work of the Women’s Camanachd Association. Players will have to work hard for a spot on the team this year which will make it difficult for me and Laura to select the final team.” The first open training session will be held at 2pm on Sunday 20 May 2012 on North Inch Playing Fields (alongside Bell’s Sports Centre), Perth. All women’s shinty players are encouraged to attend. |
