U14 North Division 1 Will Not Be Decided By Goal Difference
Camanachd Association Shinty Youth Development Manager Garry Reid has confirmed that should teams finish level on points at the top of the U14 North Division 1, the title will not be decided on goal difference.
Instead, should teams be level on points at the top of the League, there will be a play-off between the sides concerned to decide the winners.
This is because the Camanachd Association prefer to promote skills development at youth level rather than encouraging sides to rack up high scores against each other.
The 2008 U14 North Division 1 is the closest title race ever with all 5 sides still in contention for the eventual top spot.

North Division 1
Skye Camanachd U14s 7 Lochaber U14s 2
The Skye Camanachd U14s had a good 7-2 win over Lochaber U14s in their North Division 1 clash at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 22 November 2008.
Skye had some early chances but it was Lochaber who took the lead when a free hit was knocked wide to Shaun Kane and he lashed the ball high into the net.
Skye equalised when Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald miss-hit a clearance and John Gillies nipped in to score from the acutest of angles. It was the only mistake that MacDonald was to make as he had some terrific saves throughout the match.
Lochaber regained their lead after 15 minutes when Stewart Calson was allowed to run from the half way line and he confidently tucked the ball past Ally MacLeod in the Skye goal.
Skye levelled the game again with the goal of the match. Full centre Martin Bruce flicked the ball over the head of his marker Brenan MacDonald and sent a first time pass to Jordan Murchison. Murchison played in John Gillies who in turn found Willie Cowie running in on goal and the 11 year old flicked the ball past MacDonald with some aplomb.
Skye keeper Ally MacLeod saved well with his feet to keep the game level and Shaun Hedley was putting in a brilliant performance in the Skye defence, ably assisted by young Ruairidh Morrison.
Skye took the lead for the first time in the match thanks to some determined play from John Gillies. He chased a ball which seemed to be going out for a goal hit, caught it on the by-line, shrugged off a challenge from a Lochaber defender and scored a great individual goal.
Skye made it 4-2 before the interval when John Gillies had a shot saved by MacDonald and Chris MacLennan\ reacted first to net the rebound.
John Gillies completed his hat-trick 8 minutes into the second half with a lovely backhand shot, high into the net.
Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald had good saves from John Gillies and Jordan Murchison but the Spean Bridge side did enjoy good periods of possession during this period of the game.
Skye lost buckshee back Scott MacLeod through an accidental a head-knock and his helmet almost certainly saved him from more serious injury.
Skye made the scoreline more emphatic with two neat Jordan Murchison strikes in the last 3 minutes of the game.
This was a good response from the young Skye side to their recent single goal defeat to Beauly – a match when they undoubtedly missed the presence of John Gillies in the forward line – and it’s a result that keeps them in the title race as the league comes to a conclusion.

North Division 1
It was a case of what might have been for the Skye Camanachd U14s when they went down to a single goal defeat against Beauly in their North Division 1 match at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 1 November 2008.
Skye had the best of the early pressure and Beauly keeper Neil Brennan saved well from a great Willie Cowie strike and a Calum Gibb snapshot.
The match was level at the break and it was Beauly who made the better start to the second half. It was then the turn of Skye keeper Ally MacLeod to make a couple of good save.
Willie Cowie had another great strike 15 minutes into the second half but with keeper Brannan beaten, the ball came back of the crossbar.
However it was Beauly who made the vital break-through when North U14 forward Jack MacDonald burst through the Skye defence to score what proved to be the winner.
Skye had further chances, including two incredible goal mouth scrambles and a shot just past from Cowie but they couldn't get the vital goal. Skye missed the presence of full forward John Gillies who was unavailable.
Skye took Ally MacLeod out of goal and played him in the centre line in a last throw of the dice. Ewen Forrest came on in goal.
Chris MacLennan did have the ball in the net in the closing minutes but referee Iain "Crossal" Nicolson had already blown for an earlier foul on a Skye player.
Best for Skye on a disappointing day were Shaun Hedley and Willie Cowie.
Beauly were strong down the middle with Ryan Stewart, Scott MacLeod and scorer Jack MacDonald catching the eye.

North 10 South 0
The North U14s had a comprehensive 10-0 win over their South rivals in the Fraser MacPhee Trophy at the Dell, Kingussie on Sunday 5 October 2008.
This representative match was first played for in 2003 and the North have a 100% success record.
The match is played in memory of young Fort William player Fraser MacPhee. Fraser was a great competitor for whom sport and friendship transcended competition.
The North took the lead with as quick a goal as you'll see at a shinty match. Referee Garry Reid blew his whistle and threw the ball up between the full centres Martin Bruce from Skye for the North and Gary McKerracher from Oban Celtic for the South. Bruce connected first with the dropping ball and sent it high towards the South penalty spot where it landed at the feet of Lochaber's Stewart Calson. He dispatched the ball past the out-stretched foot of South keeper Connor MacPherson to give the North the lead within 5 seconds.
Beauly's Jack MacDonald - who was a constant threat throughout - made it two just a couple of minutes later and Glenurquhart's Kelvin MacKenzie made it 3-0 after 15 minutes.
Jack MacDonald scored his second after 20 minutes and Kingussie's Thomas Borthwick also found the net before the break.
Skye's Iain Grant was introduced at wing centre at half time and he produced a powerful performance in the second half.
Just 3 minutes after the break, Kelvin MacKenzie saw his shot saved by keeper MacPherson but Stewart Calson reacted first to net the rebound.
The North forwards were constantly rotating and this caused confusion in the South defence on several occasions. However Bearsden's Finlay MacMillan deserves mention for a determined performance in defence for the South.
The North went 7-0 up when Martin Bruce won a tussle with Gary McKerracher and his ball forward was fired into the net by Kelvin MacKenzie for his second strike of the game.
Thomas Borthwick made it 8-0 with a great individual goal which ended with him walking the ball round the keeper into the net.
Jack MacDonald completed an impressive hat-trick to make it 9-0 and sub Michael MacKenzie from Lovat made it a perfect 10 midway through the second half.
That was the end of the scoring as the North made a series of substitutions which perhaps affected the flow of the game.
Kinlochshiel's Donald Nixon played most of the second half and he capped a good display by setting up two of the North's goals.
Skye's Scott MacLeod was one of the North's top performers in defence and he coped admirably with everything the South attack threw at him. Beauly's Scott MacLeod and Glenurquhart's Ewen Menzies also put in good performances.
North captain Martin Bruce was presented with the Fraser MacPhee trophy by Rosemary MacPhee and he can be pleased with his performance as he continued to push the North forward from the centre line.

U14 Friendly Match
Skye Camanachd U14 B and Kinlochshiel U14s fought out an exciting friendly match in tricky conditions at Pairc nan Laoch on Friday 3 October 2008.
It was the Skye youngsters who ran out eventual winners by 2 goals to 1.
Chris MacLennan and Ally MacLeod were the Skye scorers and the Skye youngsters with-stood some Shiel pressure to win the game. Both coaches will have been pleased as to how their players performed.
Kinlochshiel's Donald Nixon will represent the North U14s in this weekend's match against the South and the youngster played well in this match.

North Division 1
The Skye Camanachd U14s had a great 5 - 1 victory over Glenurquhart in their North Division 1 top of the table clash at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
The two sides were only separated by goal difference before today's match, making the win all the more important for Skye.
John Gillies gave Skye the lead when a long ball played forward by Scott MacLeod found Jordan Murchison and his cross was finished by Gillies.
Glenurquhart equalised when referee John Angus Gillies decided that Skye keeper Ally MacLeod had kicked the ball when making a clearance and he awarded the visitors a penalty.
Skye had the best of the first half pressure although Glen should have taken the lead when Kelvin MacKenzie fired over when he looked sure to score.
Skye turned the screw in the second half and their three players selected for the North U14 side - Martin Bruce, Scott MacLeod and Ian Grant - were dominant down the middle of the park.
Jordan Murchison was excellent throughout, and he gave Skye the lead 10 minutes into the second half. Chris MacLennan set up Willie Cowie - who came on for Calum Gibb just before the interval - to make it three.
MacLennan then scrambled home the fourth before Cowie completed a very productive contribution - again set up by MacLennan - to make it five.
Chris MacLennan was particularly pleased to get his goal as his team mates playfully warned him at half time that he would get his head flushed down the toilet at the end of the game if he didn't score in the second half and continue his good scoring run!
Glenurquhart still had chances and Skye keeper Ally MacLeod had a particularly good save with his hand and he then expertly cleared the ball.
Shaun Hedley and Thomas MacDonald performed well at wing back and Mark Mortimer and Magnus Burd put in a lot of effort on the wings.
Skye were also able to introduce substitutes Scott MacDonald and Andrew Grant and both did well.
Skye can be pleased with this victory as it puts them 2 points clear at the top of North Division 1 with only three games to go.
Skye Camanachd U14 from: Ally MacLeod, Ian Grant, Shaun Hedley, Thomas MacDonald, Scott MacLeod, Mark Mortimer, (Andrew Grant), Martin Bruce (captain). Magnus Burd, (Scott MacDonald), Jordan Murchison, Calum Gibb, (Willie Cowie), Chris MacLennan,

Development League
Skye Camanachd B record a great 1-0 win against Ardnamurchan in their North Division 3 clash at Pairc nan Laoch.
Having lost 5-1 to Ardnamurchan earlier in the season, this was always going to be a tough test for Skye.
However the islanders opened brightly and Jordan Murchison shot just over after 8 minutes. Two minutes later Skye keeper Ian MacLeod saved well with his feet from a 30 yard shot by Ardnamurchan's Sandy Corrigan.
Skye took the lead after 14 minutes and it was Jordan Murchison fired in a knee high shot from 25 yards.
Willie Cowie had a low shot saved by Ardnamurchan keeper Kenny Harper but the Skye forwards didn't react quickly enough to the rebound.
The rest of the half was end to end as both teams entertained the crowd with displays of flowing shinty.
Andrew Grant had a shot saved by Harper 15 minutes into the second half and just minutes Skye were awarded a penalty for a kick inside the D. Willie Cowie's penalty was well hit but Harper pulled off a terrific save above his head.
Sandy Corrigan continued to press for Ardnamurchan but he found Ally MacLeod and Liam Tonagh in determined form in the Skye defence.
Stewart MacSween and Andrew Grant worked hard against the older, bigger Ardnamurchan defenders and Willie Cowie played some clever balls forward from the centre line.
Top performer for Skye was Ally MacLeod who was excellent at buckshee back.
This was a thoroughly entertaining match and Skye will be pleased to have come away with both points from this tricky fixture.

Skye will be represented by full back Ian Grant, buckshee back Scott MacLeod and full centre Martin Bruce. All 3 have been in fine form for Skye this season and are regulars for the Skye U17 side and the Skye second team.
Skye's Martin Bruce, who also played for the victorious North team in last year's match, will captain this year's North side.
The match is for the Fraser MacPhee Memorial Cup.
There will also be a North U17 v South U17 match at An Aird the same day with the squad for this game still to be announced.

North Division 1
Skye Camanachd U14 chances of winning North Division 1 suffered a blow when they lost 6-1at Brae View Park against Beauly.
Skye actually opened the scoring through Calum Gibb but in truth, their performance was such that they didn't deserve to get anything from the game.
Beauly's Jack MacDonald netted 5 and led his team to a convincing win.
This result means that there will be close finish to the league as Skye, Beauly, and Glenurquhart have all dropped 3 points from their initial games. Lochaber and Fort William have dropped 4 points and cannot be ruled out either.
Skye have 4 games left in the league, Lochaber away and Glenurquhart, Beauly and Lochaber at home. If they win them all, they will be champions.
Skye Camanachd U14 from: Ally MacLeod, Ian Grant, Thomas MacDonald, Shaun Hedley, Scott MacLeod, Calum Gibb, Martin Bruce (captain), Magnus Burd, Jordan Murchison, Mark Mortimer, Chris MacLennan, Scott MacDonald, Willie Cowie, Andrew Grant, Jack Latton
30 August 2008
Development League
The Skye Camanachd U14 development team travelled to Inverness on Saturday 30 August 2008 to take part in the North Development League Finals.
Skye opened the event with a convincing 7-1 victory over Kinlochbervie. They followed this up with a 2-0 win against Uist and a single goal win over Ardnamurchan. Their only blemish was a 4-0 defeat to eventual winners Strathglass in a match which the islanders could have won.
Coaches Ruairidh MacVicar and Eoghan Stewart will be pleased with how their team performed and with a bit more luck, it could have been Skye who went forward to the National Development Final.
29 August 2008
MacMaster Cup North Final
Skye Camanachd U14s suffer MacMaster Cup heartbreak as they lose out to Fort William in the semi final (North Final) in a penalty shoot out.
Skye started the game in a lack-lustre fashion and they looked to be down and out after half an hour as they trailed the home side by three goals to nil. However Jordan Murchison pulled a goal back just before the break to give the Skye youngsters hope.
Skye started the second half in a more determined fashion and Stewart MacSween, starting his first game for for the U14 A team, went close to pulling a goal back. Skye were back in the game when Martin Bruce surged forward from midfield and saw his shot saved, but Chris MacLennan nipped in to continue his recent good scoring run and bring Skye to within a goal of the home side.
It was full forward John Gillies who levelled the tie as he ghosted in at the back post to score and take the match into extra time.
MacLennan hit the post in extra time and that was the closest that both teams came to getting the crucial seventh goal. Bothe teams remained level after the initial five penalties but it was Fort William who won a place in the final with sudden death victory.
Keeper Ally MacLeod, Ian Grant, Scott MacLeod and Martin Bruce were excellent for Skye as they have been all season.
The plus side for Skye was that this match doubled up as a North Division 1 fixture meaning they recorded a 3-3 draw in what was a difficult away tie to Fort William. This means that Skye sit top of North Division 1 with two wins and a draw. Lochaber are in second place with one win and two draws and the two sides meet in the next league clash.
Skye Camanachd from: Ally MacLeod, Ian Grant, Thomas MacDonald, Shaun Hedley, Scott MacLeod, Calum Gibb, Martin Bruce (captain), Magnus Burd, (Stewart MacSween), (Scott MacDonald), Chris MacLennan, Jordan Murchison, Mark Mortimer, John Gillies Sub Ewen Forrest (not used)

Skye Camanachd B 12 Lochcarron 1
Skye Camanachd U14 B team have a convincing 12-1 victory over Lochcarron in their Development League clash.
Skye took the lead through the impressive Stewart MacSween but Issie Dalgetty, who played well, throughout, replied for the visitors to level the match and the early stages of the game were quite even.
However after 15 minutes Skye started to turn the screw and goals by Willie Cowie, another double from MacSween and Ian MacLeod, put Skye out of sight.
In the end Stewart MacSween notched 5 goals, Willie Cowie was one behind with 4 and Ian MacLeod scored a hat-trick to record an emphatic 12-1 win.

MacMaster Cup North Semi Final
Skye Camanachd 8 Kingussie 0
Skye Camanachd U14s ran out convincing 8-0 winners in the North semi final of the MacMaster Cup against Kingusie at Pairc nan Laoch.
Skye, who beat Lovat 11-0 in the last round, made a great start to the game when a Jordan Murchison shot crossed the line though John Gillies followed in to be sure. Calum Gibb got the final touch in a goal mouth scramble to give Skye a two goal half time lead.
Skye continued to pressure Kingussie in the second half and Chris MacLennan sent a rocket shot from the right, across keeper Chris Holysong, into the roof of the net. Skye introduced substitute Scott MacDonald and within minutes he made the score 4-0 direct from a corner.
When Kingussie did get forward, the found Ally MacLeod in great form in the Skye goal and he had a super save just under the bar from Owen Reid.
There were some great tussles all over the field especially between Scott MacLeod and Ryan MacWilliam and between Martin Bruce and Thomas Borthwick with the Skye boys coming out on top in both battles.
Willie Cowie scored his first goal for the under 14 A team when he blasted a great shot into the roof of the net after being set up by Chris MacLennan. Minutes later MacLennan again set up Cowie for his second and Skye's sixth goal.
John Gillies deservedly got his name on the score sheet to make it seven and Chris MacLennan scored his second goal - the third game in a row that he has netted a double - to conclude a resounding 8-0 win.
Skye will face Fort William in the North Final as the Lochaber side beat Beauly 3-1 in the other North semi final.
09 August 2008
North Division One
Glenurquhart 2 Skye Camanachd 3
Skye Camanachd U14s followed up their win against Fort William last week with a hard fought victory at Drumnadrochidt.
The Glen started the game well and put Skye under pressure in the opening minutes. However it was Skye who took the lead in 8 minutes when Chris MacLennan fired in from the left.
The home side came back strongly though and after 23 minutes Ally MacLeod made a good stop from Kelvin MacKenzie and Ian Grant cleared the rebound. Moments later MacLeod made a similar save from Matthew Brady and again Grant cleared.
Skye responded and a 25 yard shot from Martin Bruce was just wide of the goal.
However after 32 minutes Kelvin MacKenzie broke through the Skye defence and levelled the match. Two minutes later the same player put the Glen after some poor Skye defending.
Skye had the first chance of the second half when Glenurquhart keeper Cameron MacLennan saved well from Scott MacDonald. Skye’s John Gillies hit the post moments later and the visitors just couldn’t find the goal they desperately craved. Calum Gibb was starting to turn in a good performance in the unaccustomed role of wing centre.
With 20 minutes remaining, Skye introduced 11 year old Willie Cowie and he made a significant impact on the remainder of the game. First he released Jordan Murchison down the right wing. Murchison sent a great cross into the danger area and John Gillies lost his marker to level the match.
Five minutes later, Cowie fired in a cross which the Glenurquhart defence failed to clear and Chris MacLennan scored his fourth goal in two games to give Skye the lead. A shot from Andrew Grant, who had just come on for Magnus Burd, came close to increasing Skye’s lead but the islanders still required some resolute defending to see out the remainder of the match and earn two valuable points.
Skye might not have reached the heights of their win against Fort William but their determination to grind out a win when they trailed 2-1 was evident for all to see.
After two games, Skye are the only team in North Division 1 with maximum points.
1 August 2008
North Division One
Skye Camanachd 2 Fort William 0
A Chris MacLennan double ensured Skye Camanachd U14s made a great start to their North Division 1 campaign by defeating last year's winners Fort William by two goals to nil.
This was a stiff test for the Skye youngsters and they responded well. John Gillies and Martin Bruce came close to scoring in the opening stages as Skye dominated the game. The break through came after 15 minutes and it was Chris MacLennan who got the all important opening goal. MacLennan doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a great turn and shot.
Whenever Fort William did break forward, they found Skye full back Ian Grant in dominant form, ably assisted by Scott MacLeod. Also Ally MacLeod in the Skye goal looked confident and this spread throughout the defence.
Fort William came more into the game at the start of the second half but Skye were resolute with Shaun Hedley and Thomas MacDonald clearing from defensive positions.
Indeed the young Islanders had the best chance of the half when a ball into the D was handled by a Fort William defender and referee John Angus Gillies correctly awarded a penalty. Jordan Murchison's well hit penalty produced a terrific save from Fort William keeper Jack Fraser. Murchison had a great game and was influential in all Skye attacks.
Skye comfortably saw out the rest of the game and their next match is a trip to play Glenurquhart.

2008 MacMaster Cup
Lovat U14s 0 Skye Camanachd U14s 11
Skye Camanachd U14s travelled to Kiltarlidy on Saturday for their MacMaster Cup second round clash with Lovat with a depleted squad after suffering 6 call-offs through the week. This meant first outings for 11 year olds Jack Latton, Willie Cowie, Andrew Grant – who were all part of the Portree Primary School team which won the MacKay Cup last month - and Iain MacLeod from Breakish, who joined his older brother Ali Macleod in the squad. Latton, Cowie and Grant all started the game and gave performances beyond their years as did MacLeod when he came on as a second half substitute.
Chris MacLennan got the opening goal for Skye and Jordan Murchison - with a first half hat-trick – John Gillies (2) and Andrew Grant made the half time score 7-0. The scoring carried on in the second half with Gillies completing his hat-trick and Murchison taking his personal tally to five. Euan Forrest completed the scoring with his first goal for the Skye A team. And it could have been more. Murchison had a goal disallowed for offside, Gillies hit the post and Tom Stewart saw a great shot come off a keeper who knew little about it.
It was a determined performance from Skye and whilst the young players in the team might have been the main story, the older players didn’t disappoint either. Martin Bruce was tireless at full centre, frequently winning possession and starting attacks, Scott MacLeod put in a faultless performance at buckshee back and Iain Grant was the proverbial brick wall at full back on the occasions he was called into action.
Skye Camanachd U14s now excitedly await the third round draw, hoping for a home draw which has been a rare occurrence in this competition in recent times.
