Co-operative MacTavish Cup – Quarter Finals Beauly 1 Glenurquhart 6 Following last week’s postponement, Glenurquhart made the short trip to Braeview Park to play Beauly in their noon throw up. The Glen found their scoring touch, running out 6-1 winners. Beauly co-managers Stephen Maclean and Iain Morrison had to do without the services of veteran forward Jamie MacLennan and David Neilson whilst Innes Simpson remained on the injury list. David Smart was fit to play for Glenurquhart despite losing teeth whilst scoring a double in the win over Fort William in their last outing two weeks ago. The additional week’s break allowed Ruairidh Cameron, who suffered concussion in the same game, the chance to play. Arran MacDonald returned following a bout of flu and he started on the bench as did Fraser Heath who returned after several weeks’ absence through injury. However David Girvan and Paul MacKintosh remain longer term absentees. Glenurquhart struck first as Lewis MacLennan shot home on 12 minutes when he collected the ball from a corner. Beauly fought back to level on 19 minutes through Marc McLaughlin, who had an earlier goal ruled out for offside. The Glen went back in front when Lewis MacLennan got his second on 23 minutes, again from a set-piece. A Neale Reid strike past Beauly keeper MacKay Murray 10 minutes later gave the Blairbeg side a 3-1 lead at the break. The Glen took control in the second half and Neale Reid went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 50 and 83 minutes, either side of a 72 minute Iain Broadhead own goal. Reid could even have had a fourth goal but he failed to convert from the penalty spot. Glenurquhart now have home advantage against Newtonmore in next month’s semi-finals.
Balliemore Cup – First Round Skye Camanachd 2 Lochcarron 0 Late goals from substitutes Danny Morrison and Ally MacDonald gave Skye Camanachd a 2-0 derby victory over Lochcarron in the first round of the Balliemore Cup at Pairc nan Loach, Portree. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Oban Camanachd 6 Strathglass 1 Aidan MacIntyre, Andrew MacCuish and Matt Rippon each got doubles as Oban Camanachd proved too strong for Strathglass as they won 6-1 at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd may not be so familiar with the Balliemore Cup but they are amongst the favourites for this year’s competition. The home side got off to a great start as Aidan MacIntyre banged in an early double on 3 and 11 minutes. Andrew MacCuish made it 3-0 on 24 minutes and when Matt Rippon found the back of the net on 28 and 42 minutes to make it 5-0, the tie was over as a contest. Strathglass got some consolation through a Daniel Cameron own goal on 70 minutes but Andrew MacCuish got his second a minute from time to clinch a 6-1 win and a meeting with Lochaber in the quarter-finals.
Sutherland Cup – First Round Kingussie 4 Skye Camanachd 0 Sutherland Cup holders Kingussie are through to the next round as they beat Skye Camanachd 4-0 at the Dell. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Glenurquhart 5 Kyles Athletic 1 2011 runners up Kyles Athletic were no match for Glenurquhart in their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg as the home side ran out 5-1 winners. Ross MacAulay put the Glen one up on 10 minutes and Calum Fraser added a double on 29 and 36 minutes to extend their advantage. Daniel MacKintosh netted on 42 minutes to give the Glen a 4-0 lead at the break. David Boyle pulled a goal back for Kyles on 52 minutes but a Ewan Menzies effort on the hour completed a 5-1 triumph. Glengarry 0 Fort William 2 Fort William made the short trip to Craigard, Invergarry where they ran out 2-0 winners against Glengarry. The home side had Michael Brady and Daniel MacLennan free from suspension. Fort William defender Cameron Grant was available again following his two match ban. Fort William had first half goals from John MacLeod on 12 minutes and Michael Slezas on 25 minutes to thank for a 2-0 interval lead. The victory came at a cost though with teenage forward Jack Fraser suffering a leg injury. Boleskine 2 Caberfeidh 3 Craig Morrison scored twice as Caberfeidh edged out Boleskine in their all-Marine Harvest North Division 3 meeting at Farr. Malcolm Morrison got Cabers first goal with Lewis Smith and Iain Grant counting for Boleskine. Lovat 4 Strathglass 0 A Lewis Tawse hat-trick helped Lovat to a 4-0 victory over Strathglass at Balgate. The home side plays in a league above their rivals and they started as favourites. A quick-fire Lewis Tawse double on 10 and 13 minutes put Lovat two up. Lovat didn’t add to their total until 15 minutes from time when Jimmy MacKenzie fired home. Lewis Tawse rounded off a 4-0 win when he completed his hat-trick just 4 minutes later. Kilmallie 4 Ballachulish 4 We are unlikely to have heard the last of Kilmallie’s tie with Ballachulish at the Canal Parks. The tie was abandoned during the first period of extra time with the sides’ level at four goals each. It has been reported that referee Neil Ferguson called proceedings to a premature halt when supporters entered the field of play following an incident on the pitch. The Camanachd Association will consider referee Ferguson’s report before deciding what action to take. Brian MacKinnon scored on 9 and 44 minutes for Kilmallie whilst Connor MacIsaac on 75 minutes and Ross Manson 4 minutes into extra-time added to their tally. David MacPhee grabbed a hat-trick for Ballachulish and Andrew Young got the other. The tie was a very entertaining affair but it will be remembered for the controversial ending which attracted negative coverage in the national press. Newtonmore W/O v Taynuilt Newtonmore have a first round bye as Taynuilt were unable to raise a team for their meeting at the Eilan. Beauly W/O v Aberdour Beauly were awarded a walk-over as Aberdour were unable to raise a team for their meeting at Braeview Park.
Orion Group Premiership Kinlochshiel 4 Bute 2 Kinlochshiel came out on top against Bute when the Orion Group Premiership’s two newest sides met in a 1pm throw up at Kirkton. ‘Shiel were without defender John Don MacKenzie who served the second game of a two match ban. Finlay MacRae was also out with a hamstring problem and work commitments continue to rule out Fraser MacVicar. However club captain Gordie MacDonald started on the bench following his return from a knee injury. The Islanders were minus keeper Kevin Queen and midfielder James Craig who both served the second game of a two match ban. David Whitelaw was also suspended. Duncan “Ach” MacRae continued his good form when he put the home side ahead on 17 minutes and a Neil Fraser strike on 37 minutes gave them a 2-0 lead at the break. Robert Walker pulled a goal back 10 minutes into the second half but Fraser added his second 5 minutes later to restore ‘Shiel’s two goal advantage. Robert Walker got his second goal on 65 minutes but captain Gordie MacDonald had the final say when he capped his return to the team by making it 4-2 on the stroke of full time. Fort William 2 Lovat 4 Lovat came from 2-0 down to beat Fort William 4-2 in their 3pm throw up at the Black Parks. Alex Duncan was available for the Fort before he starts a two match suspension. Lovat will were without full centre Lorne MacKay’s influence as he starts a two match ban for an accumulation of bookings. Bryan Simpson returned for the home side and he put them ahead after 10 minutes. Gary Innes added a second on 22 minutes but a 29 minute Greg Matheson strike made it 2-1 at the break. Greg Matheson got his second when referee Robert Baxter awarded Lovat a penalty 5 minutes into the second half and Matheson made no mistake from the spot. Martin Bell made it 3-0 on 69 minutes Fraser Gallacher marked his return to the side when he made it 4-0 on 79 minutes. Lovat remain level on points with second place Kinlochshiel, just a point behind leaders Newtonmore. Inveraray 0 Kingussie 3 The 3.30pm throw up between Inveraray and Kingussie was switched to the Winterton as the Dell was unable to take two matches. Kingussie went home with both points thanks to a Ronald Ross hat-trick. Inveraray were without Russell MacKinlay. Kingussie were minus the suspended Louis Munro and the injured Craig Dawson. Paul Gow was also unavailable but Ronald Ross made the trip south and Iain Borthwick made a surprise start at full centre. All the goals came in the first half. Ronald Ross gave the Kings a 16 minute lead and he added a second on the half hour mark. Ross completed his hat-trick 4 minutes before the break to make it 3-0. Inveraray were always in the game but the Kingussie defence played well and kept a clean sheet. Kyles Athletic 2 Kilmallie 0 Kyles Athletic beat Kilmallie 2-0 at Strachur. Andrew King was banned for the home side whilst an accumulation of yellow cards meant bans for Kilmallie duo Peter Carmichael and Michael Rodger. The first half was goalless with both sides having chances to take the lead. Ewan Campbell has proved to be a useful acquisition for Kyles since he signed from Fort William and he put them ahead on the hour mark. Rupert Williamson got the second 10 minutes later to seal a 2-0 win.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Caberfeidh 2 Lochaber 5 Lochaber went into a 2-0 lead ahead in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 meeting with Caberfeidh at Castle Leod thanks to goals from Zandz Ferguson on the half hour mark and Scott Paterson 5 minutes later. However a Kevin Bartlett effort on the stroke of half time and a second Bartlett strike 10 minutes into the second half restored parity. Lochaber’s Ben Delaney proved to be the match winner with a hat-trick in the last half hour. Delaney put the Spean Bridge men ahead on the hour mark and he made it 4-2 on 75 minutes Referee Evan MacRae awarded Lochaber a penalty 5 minutes from time and Delaney stepped up to complete his hat-trick. The 5-2 win extends Lochaber’s lead at the top of the table.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Strachur 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll beat second bottom Strachur 3-1 in their noon throw up at Yoker to go top of the table. Martin Hall returned from a ban for GMA whilst the Oban side were without suspended pair Connor Howe and Ross MacMillan. GMA got off to a great start when Andy Mathie put them ahead on 2 minutes and Mark Bain doubled their advantage a couple of minutes later. Strachur responded at the start of the second half and Duncan MacNicol pulled a goal back within 60 seconds of the restart. However Scotland U17 international Craig Anderson fired home on 50 minutes to clinch both points. GMA may be out in front in the league but second place Oban Camanachd are only two points behind with three games in hand. Aberdour 1 Taynuilt 2 Aberdour and Taynuilt both won through to the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi-finals last weekend where the sides will meet to contest a place in the final. However league points were up for grabs when they met in Fife. Stuart Scott put the visitors ahead on 23 minutes and Willie Neilson made it 2-0 a couple of minutes before the break. Aberdour’s Lewis Nicol pulled a goal back on 5 minutes from time but Taynuilt held on for a 2-1 win. Kilmory 6 Oban Celtic 2 Ian Robertson and Alex Cunningham each scored twice as Kilmory were 6-2 winners at home to Oban Celtic. Alex Cunningham and Ally Cunningham return from suspension for Kilmory whilst the Oban side were without the suspended Scot MacRae. Gary McKerracher fired home on just 2 minutes to put the visitors ahead. However Ian Robertson squared the game just 5 minutes later. Alex Cunningham on 26 minutes and Ian Robertson’s second on 33 minutes made it 3-1. Alex Cunningham added a fourth with his second goal of the afternoon on 41 minutes but Kieran Gallagher pulled a goal back a minute later to make it 4-2 at the break. Kilmory extended their lead late in the game through Hal Jones on 85 minutes and Ally MacLennan a couple of minutes from time to make it 6-2. Kilmory’s Hal Jones and Oban Celtic keeper Jack Hill were both red carded by referee Gus Campbell for an altercation late in the game.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Newtonmore 7 Kinlochshiel 0 League leaders Newtonmore extended their advantage at the top of the table with a 7-0 win over Kinlochshiel at the Eilan. Newtonmore were without the services of suspended defenders David Campbell and Brett Munro who each started three match bans. ‘Shiel were again without youngsters Jordan Fraser and Oliver MacRae who were on first team duty. Evan Menzies put ‘More ahead on 6 minutes and Angus Gray made it 2-0 on 14 minutes. Evan Menzies got his second on 27 minutes and Connor Jones made it 4-0 on the half hour mark. Calum Stewart a couple of minutes later and Drew MacDonald on 42 minutes made it 6-0 at half time. Connor Jones got the only goal of the second half on 69 minutes and his second goal of the game made it 7-0. Lochaber 3 Aberdeen University 3 Lochaber drew 3-3 with Aberdeen University at Spean Bridge. Martin Porter put the home side ahead on 8 minutes and Keith Neville added a second on 15 minutes. Calum Edmonds pulled a goal back for the visitors on 20 minutes but a Duncan MacKinnon strike on 31 minutes put Lochaber 3-1 up at the break. The Granite City side fought back in the second half and Calum Edmonds got his second on 47 minutes and former Skye Camanachd player Kenny MacLeod was on target on 56 minutes to earn his side a 3-3 draw and a share of the points. Both Lochaber and Aberdeen University now have six points although the Students have a game in hand.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Inveraray 5 Ardnamurchan 0 Inveraray and Ardnamurchan had a 1pm throw up at the Winterton. The sides drew 3-3 at Ardnamurchan in March bur Inveraray brushed aside their opponents this time with a 5-0 victory. Lewis MacNicol and Derek Robertson each scored twice for the home side whilst Gordon Watts got the other. Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Lochside Rovers 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll went down 3-1 to league leaders Lochside Rovers at Yoker. Brian MacCallum, David MacInnes and Craig MacDougall were on target for the visitors with Andy McGhee replying for the home side.
