Lewis Camanachd 2 Skye Camanachd 10 | ||
28 January 2012 Skye Camanachd ran our 10-2 winners in their friendly match against Lewis Camanachd at Shawbost on Saturday 28 January 2012. This was the first time the sides had met in Lewis with them previously playing a cup match in Portree. Lewis fielded a weakened side and they were missing several of their regulars from the 2011 league campaign. Lewis Camanachd included all their home-based players. However Scott Murray was missing as he was playing for the Scottish University select against the British Universities hurling select. Calum Stamper and Innes Lamont were other absentees. Former Skye Camanachd duo Stuart Campbell and Eoghan Stewart were also absent from the starting line-up. Campbell was not fit enough to start the game but he refereed the first half and made an appearance for the home team in the second period. Skye Camanachd had two late call-offs with Jordon Murchison ruled out through injury and Iain MacLellan unable to make the trip. Iain Nicolson made the journey across the Minch to take in the game but he was named as a substitute following the call-offs. Skye Camanachd second team manager Murdo Morrison and assistant manager John MacLeod were unable to make the trip because of work commitments so assistant manager David Grant looked after the side. Skye Camanachd first team manager Willie MacRae also accompanied the players to cast a watchful eye over the young Skye squad. Skye played with the wind at their backs in the first half and they benefited from an own goal to go 1-0 in front. Captain David Grant started in attack and he doubled the visitors’ advantage before Will Cowie made it 3-0 with a great strike which flew into the back of the net. Paul MacKinnon added a fourth before Lewis again put through their own goal to make it 5-0. Lewis didn’t let their heads drop though and Ruairidh Repeth raced in to tuck the ball past Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald to reduce Skye’s lead to 5-1 at the break. Will Cowie was the outstanding player on the field and he got his second to make it 6-1 and Skye played into the breeze in the second half. John Angus MacInnes came off the bench and he added strength to the Skye attack. He also made an immediate impact when he scored the visitors’ seventh goal just a couple of minutes after taking the field. Kevin Kennedy pulled another goal back for Lewis to make it 7-2. John Angus MacInnes notched his second before Will Cowie completed his hat-trick. David Grant scored Skye’s tenth goal to round off a good work-out for his team and give them a 10-2 victory. Lewis Camanachd travel south next week to play Glasgow University whist the Skye Camanachd players all take part in the Annual North Skye v South Skye match for the Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup.
