cottages.com MacTavish Cup – Quarter-Final Lovat 4 Kilmallie 1 Lovat and Kilmallie met for the second successive Saturday; this time at Balgate and it was the hosts who set up a semi-final tie against Kingussie with a 4-1 victory. Lewis Birrell gave Kilmallie a 13 minute lead with a great team goal. Kilmallie played some nice one-touch shinty to play the ball up the park and Birrell finished well on his backhand, sending the ball high to the keeper’s right. Lovat lost Lorne MacKay early in the match so Duncan Davidson came on at centre and he drew Lovat level on 26 minutes. Davidson took a short pass from Fraser Heath before striking a shot from distance high into the net. Fraser Heath marked his return to the side with goals on 30 and 50 minutes. Greg Matheson was quickly in when the Kilmallie defence failed to clear Marc MacLachlan’s shot and Heath swept the ball home on his backhand to give Lovat a 2-1 interval lead. Then Duncan Davidson and Marc MacLachlan combined to find Greg Matheson in a good position and he unselfishly touched the ball inside for Fraser Heath who rolled it into the net. Davidson and MacLachlan were again involved for Lovat’s fourth before Lewis Tawse switched play to the Lovat left. Greg Matheson sent the ball low across goal and Callum Cruden smashed it into the net on his left side to make it 4-1 with 63 minutes on the clock.

Mowi Premiership Kingussie 5 Fort William 0 Kingussie and Fort William met at the Dell for the second successive Saturday. Just when it looked as if Kingussie’s injury problems were easing, manager John Gibson has lost Alexander Michie to a neck injury which will keep him sidelined for the foreseeable future whilst James Falconer was unavailable after suffering a dislocated shoulder. Cameron Bremner was also missing. Calum Grant was at full back with Robert Mabon at buckshee back whilst Rory MacKeachan and the returning Lee Bain taking the wing back positions. In scenes similar to the previous week’s contest, Fort keeper Paul MacKay pulled off a string of fine saves, making four or five good stops during the first 45 minutes alone. He was only beaten once in the first half and the goal came on 18 minutes. A good run forward from Roddy Young saw him draw Savio Genini’s marker at the edge of the box. Young squared the ball to Genini who struck it first time on his back-hand into the bottom left corner of the net. The Kings make a quick start to the second half and Dylan Borthwick made it 2-0 within a minute of the restart. Indeed Borthwick continued to get into good positions and he got his second with another good finish on 72 minutes. Ruaridh Anderson’s shot on 83 minutes took a deflection and the ball looped over goalie MacKay to make it 4-0. Savio Genini rounded off the scoring on 86 minutes when his rocket-shot from around 25 yards on the left flew into the net past a helpless keeper. It is now seven straight league wins for Kingussie, scoring twenty goals and, despite a number of defensive changes, conceding only twice in these games. Fraser Munro’s was taken off after just 10 minutes as a precautionary measure after feeling his hamstring tighten and should be fit for Saturday’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup semi-final meeting with Lovat at the Dell in what is shinty’s match of the day. Something has to give on Saturday as both Kingussie and Lovat have 100% records so far this season although Lovat have only played three league games. This should be a cracker and a big crowd is expected.
Oban Camanachd 0 Kinlochshiel 3 An understrength Oban Camanachd side eventually went down 3-0 to Kinlochshiel in their 12.30pm throw up at Mossfield. The Oban side were missing Daniel Cameron, Malcolm Clark, Daniel Madej, David Cameron and Garry Lord. Duncan “WD” MacRae was Kinlochshiel’s only absentee so David Falconer started in his place. Craig Morrison put the hosts ahead after just 6 minutes, blasting the ball home from the left. Scott MacDonald levelled with a low shot on 25 minutes but Craig Morrison got his and Caberfeidh’s second on 31 minutes when Kevin Bartlett allowed the ball to run to his strike partner and Morrison beat the full back before giving his side the interval advantage. However with just 4 minutes remaining, referee Deek Cameron awarded Kyles a penalty after a goalmouth scramble and Ross MacRae held his nerve to score from the spot. Mark Fraser almost got the visitors off to a great start after just 25 seconds. Lewis Murphy won possession from the centre and he pinged the ball forward to young Shaw on the left who found Fraser in space but his 20 yard shot was saved with his foot by Calum MacMillan, turning the ball away for a corner. There was little further goalmouth action until the half hour when Lewis Murphy lobbed a good ball into the ‘Shiel defence and Mark Fraser was quickest to react, finding space on the right before shooting inside keeper MacMillan’s post to make it 1-0. ‘Shiel made changes at the break and they levelled a minute after the restart. Zander MacRae got free of his marker and he found Corin Jack on the right and without a moment’s hesitation, Jack struck the ball on the move and it flew past Fort keeper Stuart Disher.
