The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 4 June 2022 | |
05 June 2022 A mixture of league and cup matches took place in baking heat across the country on Saturday 4 June 2022.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup - Second Round Southern Section Kilmallie 2 Inveraray 4 Inveraray claimed the remaining place in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-finals when they beat Kilmallie 4-2 in their 3pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie showed their higher league status when an early double from Stuart Callison on 13 and 26 minutes, twice punishing the Inveraray defence for not clearing their lines, secured a 2-0 lead. However when referee Iain Kennedy awarded Inveraray a 28 minute penalty, pointing to the spot when Lewis Montgomery’s run forward was abruptly ended inside the D, Fraser Watt stepped up to score. Lewis Montgomery levelled the tie on 39 minutes, with Fraser Watt providing a low cross, to make it 2-2 at the interval. The second half was only a minute old when Fraser Watt got his second with a shot from distance to put Inveraray 3-2 ahead. Kilmallie pressed hard for a leveller and the outcome remained in the balance until 88 minutes when Lewis Montgomery got his second goal of the afternoon with a low strike into the corner of the net to make it 4-2. Just a minute after the goal, Kilmallie’s Sandy Corrigan was sent off. Inveraray’s reward is a Tulloch Homes quarter-final tie at Lovat.
Mowi Premiership Kingussie 1 Oban Camanachd 0 Kingussie reached the mid-point of their Mowi Premiership campaign with their 100% record still intact but they had to work hard to beat Oban Camanachd 1-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. Iain Fraser joined Kingussie’s injury list but James Falconer returned to start the home attack. Fraser Munro and Lee Bain also returned to the starting line-up whilst Dylan Borthwick, also back, took a place on the bench. Oban Camanachd were missing Scott McKillop so Louie MacFarlane played in defence where he did well. Daniel Sloss marked Kingussie danger-man Ruaridh Anderson with Daniel MacVicar, Ross Campbell, Connor Howe and Daniel Madej making up the attack whilst Malcolm Clark started on the bench. The players and match officials gathered around the centre circle ahead of throw up to observe a minute’s silence, as did all other clubs across the country, as the shinty world mourned the passing through the week of popular Newtonmore player Andy MacKintosh. Kingussie adjusted their defensive formation to deal with Oban Camanachd’s two-one-one set up in attack. Calum Grant and Robert Mabon occupied dual full back roles with Rory Mackeachan and Lee Bain further forward. Kingussie went close to taking a first half lead when James Falconer raced into the D. Falconer’s initial shot rose up and hit the bar whilst he then turned and cracked the rebound off the post. Falconer’s eventful afternoon also involved having to come off after suffering a nasty cut to the knee but he was able to return after treatment. Visiting keeper Cameron Sutherland made some good saves in the game but he was saved by his post when Dylan Borthwick’s effort rebounded in the second half. Wing centre Scott MacMillan was always a danger for Oban Camanachd and the visitors almost upset the odds on 76 minutes when Daniel MacVicar made space on the left but his shot from a tight angle went just wide of target. However, with just 8 minutes remaining, Kingussie broke the deadlock. A Kingussie break down the wing left Oban Camanachd defender Craig Easton exposed two-on-one and when the ball was played to James Falconer, just to the side of the penalty spot, he came away from goal and although his strike on his forehand was blocked by a defender’s leg, the ball came back to him on his backhand and he sent the ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0. Oban Camanachd, who had held on for so long, knew time was now against them and they pushed Daniel Cameron up front for the remainder of the match but they couldn’t find a leveller.
Kinlochshiel 3 Kyles Athletic 0 Kinlochshiel won their sixth successive match; beating Kyles Athletic 3-0 in their 3pm throw up at a baking hot Rèaraig. Both teams were without key players with Kinlochshiel missing Mark MacDonald and David Falconer whilst skipper Innes MacDonald and his brother Roddy MacDonald were unavailable for Kyles as were Scott MacDonald and Martin MacRae. Callum Millar, Cameron Jack, Sorley Thomson and Andy King made up the Kyles back line and Max Carr was their only substitute. Duncan “WD” MacRae cut his holiday abroad short to play for ‘Shiel and he started in defence in place of Mark MacDonald. Kinlochshiel went on the attack from the throw up and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 14 minutes. Archie MacRae played the ball forward from midfield to John MacRae who held off Callum Millar. MacRae’s ball forward caught out the Kyles defence and Archie MacRae, who had continued his run forward, lost his marker before running in on goal. With keeper John Whyte coming off his line, MacRae knocked the ball to the keeper’s left before running round the opposite side and touching the ball into the net, one-handed, from a tight angle. The home pressure continued and when John MacRae’s shot was saved by John Whyte on 20 minutes, Ali Nixon ran in from the left to send a low, crisp drive into the net on his backhand. John MacRae added a third on 29 minutes with as bizarre a goal as you will see this season. ‘Shiel had just replaced Archie MacRae, who was suffering with a back injury, with Rory Slaughter taking over. Conor Cormack pitched an indirect free-hit into the goal area and John Whyte allowed the ball to run by him into the net as no other player had touched it. However the ball took a bounce and came back off the post and the alert John MacRae ran in to force the rebound into the net. Kyles came more into the game in the second half and forced a couple of late saves from home goalie Josh Grant. However Kinlochshiel were more than worthy of the win and they are without a game this Saturday as they cheer on their under-17 side in the MacTavish Juvenile Cup Final against Beauly under-17 at the Bught Park, Inverness. Throw up is at 1pm.
Fort William 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Fort William notched their first league win of the season; beating Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-2 in their 3pm throw up at An Aird to move out of the relegation zone. Fort William included Bryan Simpson in their attack. GMA travelled without their former Kinlochshiel contingent of John Don MacKenzie, Oliver MacRae and Jonnie MacAskill as well as Ryan Harrison. The home side made a bright start, creating two chances in the first 5 minutes. The first saw Calum Shepherd play the ball on to Bryan Simpson who fired narrowly wide of the keeper’s left post. Then Arran MacPhee turned his marker but his shot from the penalty spot went over the bar. So it was against the run of play that GMA took an 8 minute lead. Following a clearance out of defence, John McNulty turned Astie Cameron in midfield and he found Ewen Fraser on the left. Fraser still had plenty to do but he ran past his opponent before sending a fierce shot inside keeper Paul MacKay’s left post. The goal seemed to add to Fort William’s determination and they pulled level just a couple of minutes later. A good ball from Astie Cameron on the left came to Victor Smith who found Lewis Morrison on the right and his smooth strike went in at the keeper’s right post. Both teams went after the next goal and it was the Glasgow side who regained the lead with a well worked goal on the stroke ok half-time. Buckshee forward Stewart Grant played the ball to Ewen Fraser who found John McNulty on the right. McNulty whipped a shot from a tight angle which hit the inside of the keeper’s right post before crossing the line for what was truly fine goal. Fort William made a good start to the second half and on 50 minutes, a good pass from Victor Smith on the right came to Ali MacRae and he volleyed over the bar from 20 yards. However the equaliser was only delayed by 3 minutes as a half-clearance out of the GMA defence allowed Bryan Simpson the chance to pounce and he beat keeper Jonathon Oates from 15 yards. John McNulty and Ewen Fraser combined well for the visitors on the hour. Fraser peeled away from his marker but Paul MacKay saved his low shot before clearing the danger. The winning goal came on 64 minutes when Victor Smith won possession on the left and he sent a good shot goalwards. Jonathon Oates saved but the rebound fell to Bryan Simpson inside the box and he calmly slotted the ball home to make it 3-2. Bryan Simpson put in a great shift up front and was arguably the best player on show. The home side were also well served by Mark Grant and Astie Cameron, who were both solid in defence, and Calum Shepherd who controlled the centre line at times. John McNulty and Ewen Fraser were best for GMA.
Lovat 3 Caberfeidh 1 Lovat continue to pick up points as they beat Caberfeidh 3-1 at Balgate. Marc MacLachlan broke the deadlock on 5 minutes with Fraser Heath on 18 minutes and Marc MacLachlan on 22 minutes earning a 3-0 interval lead. Connor MacGregor netted 10 minutes from time to give Cabers some consolation.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup - First Round Northern Section Glengarry 2 Skye Camanachd 3 Skye Camanachd survived a late comeback to beat Glengarry 3-2 at Craigard. The Islanders were 7-0 winners when the sides met in the cottages.com MacTavish Cup earlier in the season but this was a much closer affair. Skye settled into the tie and two good finishes from Will Cowie on 5 and 28 minutes gave them a two goal lead. Taylor Matheson continued his scoring streak on 38 minutes and only some good goalkeeping and missed opportunities prevented the Islanders from having a bigger lead at the break. Skye took full back William MacKinnon off as a precautionary measure and moved Neil MacVicar from full centre to full back. Following the switch, Skye seemed to lose their way in the middle of the park and ‘Garry went with a forward line of Rhuairaidh MacDonald, Nick Dalgety, Shaun Nicolson and Raymond Robertson for the last 20 minutes. Glengarry pulled a goal back on 77 minutes when referee Martin MacLean penalised Skye defender Connor Gilpin for a “kick” on the goal line with Skye claiming the ball came off his thigh with the defender’s foot still on the ground. Raymond Robertson was unfazed as he stepped up to score from the spot. Then, just a couple of minutes later, Nick Dalgety sent a superb shot screaming into the net to make it 3-2. Archie Millar made his first team debut during the second half and he went close to scoring on a couple of occasions but there was no further scoring. Skye now travel to Beauly in the quarter-finals this coming Saturday.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup – Quarter-Finals Col Glen 2 Bute 1 Col Glen’s good start to the season continued as they beat Bute 2-1 at Glendaruel. Scott MacVicar gave Col Glen a 50 minute lead but Iain McDonald equalised on 83 minutes. However when referee Lachie Wood awarded Col Glen a last minute penalty, Scott MacVicar held his nerve to score for the second time. Col Glen await the winners of the tie between Beauly and Skye to learn their semi-final opponents.
Strathglass W/O v Oban Celtic Oban Celtic were unable to raise a team for their tie against Strathglass at Cannich so ‘Glass go through to the semi-finals where they will play Inveraray.
Mowi National Division Glenurquhart 1 Beauly 6 Title hopefuls Beauly went five points clear at the top of the Mowi National Division after beating Glenurquhart 6-1 in their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. Beauly’s Euan Maccormick made the difference with first half goals on 15 and 34 minutes. Josh MacDonald Haig pulled a goal back a minute into the second half but when Euan Maccormick completed his hat-trick to make it 3-1 on 50 minutes, there was only going to be one winner. Robbie Brindle added two more goals on 60 and 75 minutes with David MacLean making it 6-0 on 79 minutes.
Mowi North Division 1 Fort William 2 Skye Camanachd 1 The Fort William seconds edged the Skye Camanachd seconds 2-1 in their noon throw up at An Aird. Skye almost went in front in the opening minutes when Charlie Latton on the right found Angus Gilpin and his lovely ball picked out Alastair Macleod but his shot hit the side-netting. At the other end, Lachie Shaw came close for the Fort when he found space 20 yards out but his shot went by the keeper’s left post. Shaw went close again on 25 minutes, turning his marker and his strike was heading for the top corner of the net before Skye goalie Calum Nicolson raised his stick to save. The game was flowing from end-to-end and Alastair Macleod’s 38 minute shot was well saved by Stuart Disher and the Fort keeper managed to clear ahead of Skye’s Archie Millar who was looking to profit from any slip-up. With a couple of first half minutes remaining, a Fort William corner found Rhys Kennedy outside the D but his low shot towards the corner was saved with his foot by Calum Nicolson with the ball coming off the post before it was cleared. Fort William went in front a minute into the second half. Padraig McNeil and Lachie Shaw were involved before Greig Kelly struck a good shot from the left which beat the keeper. Skye created a chance to level when David MacInnes won possession in midfield before playing the ball to Ian MacPherson on the left and he passed to Angus Gilpin on the right and his shot went narrowly wide of the keeper’s right post. Fort William increased their lead on 75 minutes when Greig Kelly won possession from John Angus MacInnes in the corner and he squared the ball, which bobbled past a defender, to an unmarked Cam Ross on the D and he tapped the ball home. Skye didn’t let their heads drop and they got their reward a minute later when a good ball from Allan MacLeod found Ian MacPherson who played in Angus Gilpin and although his shot was saved and the ball bounced outside the D, substitute Iain Murray produced a clinical finish. Fort William had the chance to extend their lead on 80 minutes when referee John Angus Gillies awarded them a penalty, penalising a reckless swing from defender Allan MacLeod. However Padraig McNeil sent the spot-hit past the keeper’s right post. However it mattered little as Fort William held onto their 2-1 lead until the final whistle. Fort William’s Padraig McNeil turned in a man of the match performance whilst Lachie Shaw was also excellent. John Angus MacInnes did well for Skye in what was his first game of the season whilst youngsters Archie Millar and Angus Gilpin linked up well on a number of occasions in attack.
Glenurquhart 2 Inverness 3 The Inverness first team stay top of the division as Stephen Bellshaw’s hat-trick helped them beat the Glenurquhart second team 3-2 in their noon throw up at Blairbeg. Dael MacDonald Haig gave the Glen a 3 minute advantage only for Steven Bellshaw to restore parity a couple of minutes after before he completed his hat-trick with efforts on 36 and 40 minutes. Kingussie 2 Caberfeidh 0 The Kingussie colts scored a goal in each half to beat the Caberfeidh colts 2-0 in their noon throw up at the Dell. Kingussie’s Darren Hanlan broke the deadlock on 38 minutes and the outcome remained in the balance until a minute from time when referee John Matheson awarded the hosts a penalty and Taighan MacLeod stepped forward to score from the spot.
Kinlochshiel 7 Lovat 0 The Kinlochshiel juniors showed that they are not out of the title race when they beat the Lovat juniors 7-0 in their noon throw up at Rèaraig. The closest to an early opener came when ‘Shiel’s Rory Barclay saw his strike bounce back off the frame of the goal. Duncan MacMillan gave ‘Shiel a 33 minute lead with a low shot which went in off the keeper’s right post. Despite their dominance, ‘Shiel didn’t add a second until 61 minutes when substitute Rory Slaughter sent a cross from the right low into the net. ‘Shiel broke up the park on 66 minutes and Archie MacRae, another substitute, found space left of centre and he sent a fine 25 yard shot high into the net. Archie MacRae got his second to make it 5-0 on 69 minutes, this time turning back to make space before smashing a shot over the keeper’s right shoulder. Ronan MacMillan in the Lovat goal made a great save to deny Duncan MacMillan, parrying the ball with his club high above his head. However Duncan MacMillan wasn’t to be denied and he ran in from the left to add a sixth on 85 minutes before completing his hat-trick on 88 minutes with a strike from the right.
