RBS MacTavish Cup – First Round Kilmallie 3 Caberfeidh 2 Kilmallie are the final team through to the RBS MacTavish Cup quarter-finals after they beat Caberfeidh 3-2 in their noon throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie boss Mark MacPherson was without forwards Michael Rodger and Mark Graham. Alan MacDonald was injured. Cabers manager Lee Nicol had to do without the services of Jodi Gorski. Liam Symonds gave Cabers a 10 minute lead but John Stewart levelled on 25 minutes. Kilmallie took the lead through Liam MacDonald just 4 minutes later after his fine strike rounded off a good move. When referee Evan MacRae awarded the visitors a 32 minute penalty, full centre Craig Morrison stepped forward to score from the spot. The winning goal came 15 minutes from the time and it was Liam MacDonald’s second strike of the afternoon which earned Kilmallie a trip to Kirkton to play Kinlochshiel in the quarter-finals.
Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup – First Round Strachur 1 Ballachulish 4 Marine Harvest National Division side Ballachulish beat Strachur from the league below 4-1 at Strachurmore. Strachur’s Alan Paterson was suspended but Mark Robertson was free of his ban for the home side. Balla’s Cain MacPhee was free of suspension and lined-up if defence but John MacDonald was still banned. Scott Henderson was back in the squad after injury but the visitors were still without David Grant. Balla’ all but won the tie in the first half. Strachur forward Preston Shuttleworth required stitches to a head wound and he had to leave the field early in the game. Lorne Brown put them ahead on 27 minutes and Scott Henderson added a second on 35 minutes. Stuart Robertson’s tucked the ball home from the edge of the D on 43 minutes made it 3-0 at half-time. Scott Henderson got his second 10 minutes into the second half. Iain Wilson’s goal on 80 minutes was mere consolation for Strachur. The sides meet at the same venue in the Balliemore Cup first round next weekend.
Glenorchy 0 Bute 0 (Bute won 2-1 on penalties) Glenorchy and Bute could not be separated after two hours of shinty at Mart Park. With no goals after the regulation 90 minutes and half hour extra-time period, referee Robert Baxter took the tie to a penalty shoot-out which visitors Bute won 2-1. James Livingston converted the Glenorchy penalty but Bute netted twice through Gordon MacMillan and John MacCallum to win the tie. Bute will welcome Oban Camanachd to the Meadows in the quarter-finals.
Taynuilt 0 Aberdour 2 Aberdour returned from the Taynuilt Playing Field with both points after a 2-0 win over Taynuilt. Jack Mitchell put the visitors ahead with the only goal of the first half on 37 minutes. Aberdour couldn’t be sure of a place in the next round until Adam Leask scored their second 5 minutes from time. Taynuilt’s Stewart Sloss was sent off by referee Ronnie Campbell. Aberdour will host Inveraray in the last eight of the competition.
Oban Celtic 4 Kilmory 1 The tie between Oban Celtic and Kilmory at Mossfield was postponed last weekend because of a bereavement. However the rescheduled encounter saw Oban Celtic run out 4-1 victors in Oban. Oban Celtic boss Calum Fox was without the fire-power of Kenny Wotherspoon in attack as he served a one game ban for a bookings points accumulation. Mark Robertson was free of his two game ban for the visitors. Kilmory’s Craig Taylor scored his second goal in two games to give the visitors a 12 minute lead. However a Neil Carmichael shot from distance on 23 minutes and Allan MacKie on 28 minutes later gave Oban Celtic the advantage at the break. Second half goals from Lee Askew on 70 minutes and Daniel Madej a couple of minutes later rounded off the 4-1 win. Kilmory’s cause wasn’t helped when Adam Johnston was sent off by referee Billy Wotherspoon. Oban Celtic’s reward is a trip to Jubilee Park to play Ballachulish in the quarter-finals. The weekend match doubled up as a contest for the Annual Robert Wylie Memorial Cup which was lifted by Oban Celtic captain Daniel Madej. Celtic’s Neil Carmichael was named man of the match and he was presented with the inaugural Bob Wylie trophy in honour of Robert’s Dad who passed away last year.
Marine Harvest Premiership Glenurquhart 2 Kyles Athletic 3 Table toppers Kyles Athletic stay out in front after they beat Glenurquhart 3-2 in a tight but entertaining encounter at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart captain Andrew Corrigan returned but last week’s match winner Billy Urquhart was absent as he was working. John Whyte continued to deputise for an injured Kenny MacDonald in the Kyles goal and the visitors were also without David Zavaroni. This was a very close contest but Kyles just edged it. Neale Reid fired the Glen into a first minute lead when he got on the end of a ball over the defence and he scored from a tight angle. Matthew MacColl equalised on 15 minutes and Thomas Whyte put the Tighnabruaich side in front on 23 minutes. Glen’s James MacPherson made it 2-2 on 39 minutes as this cracking game continued to swing from end-to-end. The winning goal came on 75 minutes when Thomas Whyte got his second to make it 3-1 and maintain Kyles’ perfect start to the season.
Fort William 1 Inveraray 1 Fort William picked up their first point of the season when they drew 1-1 with Inveraray at An Aird. Stevie Stewart was free of suspension for Fort William but they were without newly-wed Niall MacPhee and forward Ewan Campbell. Euan McMurdo served the second game of a two game suspension an under-strength Inveraray who were also minus Christopher Crawford, Fraser MacNicol, and Ally MacDonald so some of their younger players were given the chance to impress. Inveraray went ahead on 17 minutes when a David MacPherson shot was deflected into his own net by Fort William defender Sean Cruickshank. Fort William’s Alexander MacMillan darted forward from the free-hit on 33 minutes and he stroked the ball past Graham MacPherson in the Inveraray goal to make it 1-1. This was a fairly scrappy, stop-start game but and a draw was probably a fair result. Fort William remain bottom of the table and Inveraray go into sixth place.
Newtonmore 2 Oban Camanachd 1 Newtonmore got back on track after their league defeat to Inveraray a fortnight earlier, when they toppled Oban Camanachd 2-1 at the Eilan. The Newtonmore absentees included Danny MacRae, Jamie Robinson and Scott Campbell whilst Norman Campbell was a late call-off. Owen Fraser stood-in for Michael Ritchie in goal. Fraser MacKintosh was back from injury and he started at wing centre. Defender James MacMillan was free of suspension for Oban Camanachd boss Gussie Campbell. Newtonmore lost Evan Menzies with a hamstring injury mid-way through the first half and Liam Mullender came on in his place. Glen MacKintosh gave ‘More a 21 minute lead from the spot after referee Graham Cameron had awarded them a penalty following a foul on Liam Mullender. Newtonmore’s injury jinx struck again when Chris Sellar had to come off so Craig Ritchie entered the fray in midfield and Fraser MacKintosh pushed forward into attack. It didn’t take Fraser MacKintosh long to make an impact up front as he sent a back-hand bullet high into the net to make it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Lorne Dickie pulled a goal back for Oban Camanachd on 59 minutes. Newtonmore youngster Iain Richardson was given a debut at full forward. Oban Camanachd goalie Robert Dunnings made a superb save from Glen MacKintosh as ‘More looked to seal the win. There was drama on 76 minutes when referee Graham Cameron awarded Oban Camanachd a penalty. However Owen Fraser did well to keep out Scott MacMillan’s well-struck penalty with his foot. Newtonmore saw out the remaining minutes to take the points. Newtonmore boss Paul John MacKintosh will be concerned to see forwards Evan Menzies and Chris Sellar added to the injury list with Menzies’ hamstring injury looking the more serious.
Lovat 6 Kingussie 1 Lovat put their stuttering start to the season behind them in spectacular style when they beat Kingussie 6-1 at Balgate. Lovat were without the injured Jamie Matheson. Fraser Gallacher started at full back with Drew Howie relegated to the bench. Kingussie welcomed Louis Munro back into the side and he started at full centre. However there was no Garry Munro or Thomas Borthwick who has yet to play this season. Davie Anderson was on holiday so fellow co-manager looked after the squad which included seven players aged under 20 years old. Kevin Thain remained in goal for the Kings in place of the injured Craig Dawson and he had a busy afternoon. Lorne MacKay gave Lovat a 4 minute lead when he had time to steady himself before crashing the ball high into the net from the left of the D after great wing play from Greg Matheson who beat three players on a mazy run. However Kingussie’s Chris Holleysong cancelled out MacKay’s effort on 25 minutes. Louis Munro had pushed forward and he shot goalwards with Holleysong getting a touch to deflect the ball past Stuart MacDonald in the Lovat goal. Lovat’s Ryan Ferguson scored on 31 minutes when his spinning shot took a bounce in front of keeper Thain and the ball ended up in the back of the net to make it 2-1. Just 5 minutes later, Lorne MacKay had an almost identical chance to when he scored the opener but he failed to convert with Lewis Tawse the provider. Lovat took their 2-1 advantage into the break. When Kingussie did attack, they found Callum Cruden dominant in the home defence. Lovat took control in the second half and Kevin Bartlett first time effort made it 3-1 on 61 minutes when he lost his marker and got on the end of a free-hit at the back post to score a well-taken goal. Greg Matheson shot through a ruck of players past and unsighted Kevin Thain on 67 minutes to make it 4-1. Lovat were in the grove and Lewis Tawse got the fifth on 73 minutes from close range with Kingussie claiming offside. Lovat made a change seconds later with Fraser Gallacher coming off and James Grieve, who has made several substitute appearances since his return from injury this season, coming on in his place. And there was still time for Greg Matheson to get his second goal of the game with just 10 minutes remaining. Lorne MacKay lobbed the ball towards the D and Matheson left to take the ball out of the air and as he was falling, he got a touch to steer the ball into the goal from a tight angle to make it 6-1. Lovat go second in the table whilst Kingussie drop to eighth spot.
Kinlochshiel 0 Lochaber 0 Kinlochshiel and Lochaber shared the points in a hard-fought goalless draw at Kirkton. Kinlochshiel boss Colin Fraser made one change with Alasdair Nixon starting and Jordan Fraser dropping onto the bench. Lochaber boss Ally Ferguson welcomed back Shaun Nicolson, Lachlan Campbell and Kevin Ferguson who all missed the RBS MacTavish Cup victory over Kingussie last weekend. Injured defender Jack Dignan was still missing. Lochaber started brightly but as play swung to the other end, Lochaber goalie Calum MacDonald saved from Alasdair Nixon before the home side forced five corners in succession. Lochaber fought back and a Stuart Callison from the fight flew the wrong side of the post on 17 minutes. A miss-hit ’Shiel shy caused panic in the Kirkton side’s defence but Shaun Nicolson’s effort was blocked. The teams attacked eachother for the remainder of the half. Kinlochshiel goalie Scott Kennedy saved with his chest from Pat Toal and at the other end, just when Keith MacRae thought he had got away from marker Lachlan Campbell, the ball stuck in the mud which allowed Calum MacDonald the chance to come off his line to clear the danger. Kinloshiel had the first chance of the second half when a Keith MacRae shot was blocked following a corner. The rebound came back to MacRae but keeper MacDonald made an outstanding reflex stop with his right foot. Brother John MacRae was next to threaten as he cut in from the right but his deft touch knocked the ball off the outside of the post and the chance was gone. Shaun Nicolson had a half-chance on the hour mark but his shot went wide off target. Lochaber again had Calum MacDonald to thank on 68 minutes as he did superbly well to turn away a great solo effort from John MacRae with his caman. Scott Kennedy had to scamper across his goal to foil a Pat Toal attempt from distance. Kinlochshiel had the game’s best chance 5 minutes from time when referee Deek Cameron awarded them a penalty for a push on Keith MacRae. However Jordan Fraser’s effort went over the junction between post and crossbar so the sides had to settle for a point apiece.
Marine Harvest National Division Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Beauly 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll took the points and Beauly tasted league defeat for the first time this season at Paterson Park, Yoker. Beauly’s Colin MacDonald was ruled out with a hand injury but full back Jamie MacLennan and attacker Sean Stewart were back in the side. Stewart returned after suffering a broken nose and receiving eleven stiches in the win over Ballachulish. He lined up against GMA wearing a helmet. GMA took the lead from a shy from the left after 22 minutes. The ball came to the back post and Craig Anderson hit it across the keeper into the top left corner of the net. Marc MacLachlan made it 1-1 on the hour mark when he despatched the ball into the back of the net from the left of the D. Craig Anderson had scored three times midweek as Strathclyde University lifted the Littlejohn Vase and he got his second goal of this match on 70 minutes when the ball came out to him outside the D and he hit it low into the net, through a whole load ruck of players, past and unsighted Josh Grant in the Beauly goal. Mark Bain sealed the win a couple of minutes later when he collected possession at the D which left him one-on-one with keeper Grant and Bain flicked the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. Beauly’s Sean Stewart was sent off by referee David Mitchell with around 7 minutes remaining.
Inverness 0 Skye Camanachd 3 Skye Camanachd recorded their first league win of the season when they beat Inverness 3-0 at the Bught Park outside pitch. Neil MacVicar and Shockie MacLennan were missing for Skye so Kenny MacLeod got a start and he pushed the ball home to give Skye a 16 minute lead following a goalmouth scramble. Kenny MacLeod made it 2-0 on 35 minutes when he picked the ball up around 18 yards out and he fired a crisp, low shot past Adam MacMaster. Skye clinched the win on 65 minutes thanks to a neat finish from Jordan Murchison. The only black spot for Skye was a late red card for defender Steven Morrison for two bookings.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Strathglass 3 Kinlochshiel 2 Fifth place Strathglass inflicted Kinlochshiel’s first defeat of the season when they beat the west coast side 3-2 at Cannich. ‘Shiel were without Fergus Dobson, Aedan MacRae, Douglas Campbell and Ronan Taylor. Allan MacDiarmid played despite having cracked ribs. Josh Fraser put Strathglass ahead on 9 minutes but Kenneth Loades restored parity with his second goal in successive games on 35 minutes but his effort was somewhat fortuitous. Allan MacDiarmid hit the post in the latter part of the first half so the score remained even at the break. Visiting goalie Iain Cameron made a superb reaction save on 55 minutes as he turned the ball over the bar. However he could do little to stop Robert Geddes putting Strathglass back in front on 58 minutes. But again ‘Shiel drew level through Duncan “Ach” MacRae, back playing following injury, on 62 minutes. MacRae knocked the ball home after a Michael Morrison shot had come off the post. ‘Shiel’s Lewis MacVicar saw his effort cleared off the line but the winning goal came at the other end and only a minute form time. It was a second strike of the afternoon from Robert Geddes which gave his side both points.
Beauly 1 Glenurquhart 3 Glenurquhart came out on top in the reserve derby against Beauly at Braeview Park. Beauly were missing Kenneth MacKenzie and Andrew Morrison who were on first team duty. Glenurquhart were able to call on the services of David Smart and his contribution was to prove significant. Beauly got off to the best possible start when full forward Martin Davidson made just enough space to turn and fire the ball into the net with just 3 minutes played. David Smart equalised on 7 minutes when David Smart ran in to goal and he slotted the ball into the net to make it 1-1. David Smart got his and Glenurquhart’s second on 19 minutes when he collected and Iain MacLeod free-hit and beat Beauly goalie Kyle MacDonald by his left post to make it 2-1 at the break. Martin Davidson hit the post just after the restart but it was Glenurquhart who would extend their lead on 53 minutes. Former Boleskine player Raymond Robertson got the goal to make it 3-1. Glenurquhart remain fourth in the table whilst Beauly are seventh.
Lochcarron 3 Fort William 4 Fort William eventually beat Lochcarron but the odd goal in seven at Battery Park. Lochcarron had Gregor Cushnie back in the side after he missed their last couple of outings. The visitors raced into an early 3-0 lead with Duncan Rodger getting a quick-fire hat-trick with goals on 5, 8 and 10 minutes. Lochcarron were still very much in the game though, even during that early period, and Gregor Cushnie pulled a goal back on 31 minutes. Lochcarron’s David MacCuish made it interesting when he scored on 63 minutes to make it 3-2. Lochcarron pressed hard for a leveller but it was Duncan Rodger who got his fourth just 5 minutes from time to make it 4-2. Daniel MacRae got another for Lochcarron a couple of minutes later to make it 4-3 but his side couldn’t get the equaliser they probably deserved.
Kingussie 4 Lovat 0 Kingussie beat Lovat 4-0 in their second team match at the Dell. The Kings were short of players which meant they fielded Ronald Ross in attack. This was to prove decisive as Ross scored twice in each half – on 33, 40, 77 and 81 minutes – to clinch a 4-0 victory and give his side their first win of the season.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Inveraray 1 Lochside Rovers 5 Lochside Rovers go to the top of the league following their 5-1 win over the Inveraray second team at the Winterton. The defeat means Inveraray drop to fourth place in the league.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Skye Camanachd 6 Inverness 0 League leaders Skye Camanachd reserves returned to action after their “Free Saturday” and they were 6-0 victors over the Inverness second team at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod showed good close control before giving the home side a 21 minute lead. James Pringle made it 2-0 on 35 minutes when he shot low into the net following a corner on the left. Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod got his second in first half stoppage time following a free-hit to make it 3-0. Skye boss Davie Pringle pushed defender Alan Palmer into attack at the break and he chipped in with a couple of goals. The first was a shot from the right on 59 minutes which deceived visiting goalie Allan MacLeod. Palmer got his second when he burst into the D on 72 minutes and although his first effort was blocked, he slotted the rebound low into the net to make it 5-0. Iain MacLellan rounded off the scoring when he made it 6-0 in stoppage time. Ross Nicolson played in a shy from the right which Alan Palmer played into MacLellan’s path and he shot home to keep Skye at the top of the table.
Lochaber 1 Caberfeidh 3 Fifth place Lochaber went down 3-1 to second place Caberfeidh at Spean Bridge. Finlay Nicolson got the Lochaber goal but Graeme MacLachlan and two goals from Liam Symonds, who was in action for the Caberfeidh first team earlier in the day, gave Cabers the points. Kirsty Delaney was excellent for a Lochaber side who defended well through-out.
Boleskine 1 Aberdeen University 3 Third place Aberdeen University beat Boleskine 3-1 at Farr. Boleskine’s Matthew Ross served the second game of a two match ban. David Fraser was free to play for the Students but he will miss their next match for a bookings points accumulation. Kenny Cushnie gave the Students a 20 minute lead but former Inverness player Scott Watson levelled 5 minutes later. Mark Fraser scored for the fourth league game in a row on 31 minutes to put the visitors back in front. John Sweeney netted on 59 minutes to seal the 3-1 triumph. The match was refereed by Camanachd Association President Jim Barr.
Kilmallie 5 Lewis Camanachd 2 Kilmallie recorded their first win of the season when they beat Lewis Camanachd 5-2 at the Canal Parks. Will Church and Al Reed were missing for the Islanders. Lewis started well but home captain Arran Sandison netted on 15 and 41 minutes to leave Kilmallie two goals to the good at half-time. Visiting goalie Calum Stamper made a great save just after the restart but Sandison completed his hat-trick on 50 minutes to make it 3-0. The Islanders staged a come-back and Donald Lamont followed up his double last week with a neat back-hand drive on 52 minutes. Lewis boss Iain Sinclair replaced Seamus Charity and Conor MacDonald with Eoghan Stewart and Andrew Murray and a rare Eoghan Stewart goal on 65 minutes narrowed the home side’s advantage to a single goal. Stewart was quickest to react when a Paddy Sinclair shot was saved and he forced the ball over the line to make it 3-2. However Arran Sandison got his fourth 10 minutes from time to make it 4-2 and Brian MacKinnon completed the 5-2 win on 85 minutes. The Kilmallie keeper saved a Paddy Sinclair penalty, awarded by referee Evan MacRae, officiating his second match of the day, late in the game.

David Martin (Jnr) put Oban Lorn ahead after 14 minutes. Andrew MacMillan made it 2-0 on 30 minutes. A second David Martin (Jnr) goal on 35 minutes and Andrew MacMillan’s second just 4 minutes later gave the Oban side a comfortable 4-0 advantage at the break. David Martin (Jnr) completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes. Lewis Miller was on target for GMA on 74 minutes to make it 5-1 but the win means Oban Lorn take over at the top of the table.
Col Glen 4 Glenorchy 1 Col Glen go second in the table thanks to a 4-1 victory over the Glenorchy second team at MacRae Park. The Glenorchy seconds travelled with just ten players and they fell behind to a Connor Kennedy goal after just 8 minutes. However they defended well for the remainder of the half to restrict Col Glen to a single goal lead at half-time. When referee Jim Innes pointed to the penalty spot after 56 minutes, Steven MacKellar stepped up to convert from the spot. Connor Kennedy got his second on 71 minutes to make it 3-0 and although Glenorchy’s Iain Livingstone pulled a goal back after 78 minutes, Stewart MacKellar got Col Glen’s fourth a minute later to make it 4-1.

Former Lochcarron player Finlay Stark was proving to be the difference between the sides and he got his second to make it 3-1 on 51 minutes. The winning margin could have been great but for a couple of terrific saves from Aberdour goalie Crag Callaghan.
Bute W/O v Ballachulish The Ballachulish second team were unable to raise a team for their match with the Bute seconds at the Meadows. Bute have been awarded the points and the mandatory 5-0 win. This is the fourth fixture that the Balla’ reserves have been unable to fulfil this season. The Jubilee Park club’s first team have been adversely affected through player unavailability, injury and suspension and this has had a knock-on effect on the second team’s player selection.
