Artemis Macaulay Cup - First Round Oban Camanachd 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Oban Camanachd were comfortable 4-1 winners against Glasgow Mid Argyll in their 3pm throw up at a rainy Mossfield. Malcolm Clark and Evan MacLellan returned from injury to the Oban Camanachd starting line-up but defender Garry Lord was still out. Ross Campbell, David Cameron, Innes Jackson and Scott MacMillan made up a strong bench. GMA’s Craig Anderson remained sidelined with a broken finger whilst top scorer Ewen Fraser was also missing as was Jamie McFadyen. However former Lochaber player John Sweeney returned to the side and former Oban Celtic player Ally McKerracher, who was to have a good game, featured in attack. Oban Camanachd hit the front on 26 minutes when Connor Howe took a lovely touch as he got onto Daniel Madej’s low ball from the left before slotting it into the bottom corner of the net from inside the D. Daniel Madej added his name to the scoresheet on 35 minutes. Malcolm Clark’s hit-in from the right dropped into the danger area where Connor Howe shot goalwards. GMA goalie Jonathon Oates saved with his legs but Daniel Madej was quickly in to turn the rebound home. GMA were forced into a couple of first half changes through hamstring problems. The Oban side passed up chances to put the tie out of sight and they were made to pay on 63 minutes with all three GMA substitutes involved in the goal. Former Skye midfielder Stewart Grant played James MacLeod’s hit-in forward and John McNulty found Chris Holly-song. Daniel Sloss stretched to divert Holly-song’s shot and the ball fell kindly for McNulty who had continued his run and he swept the ball into the net. The home forwards passed up a couple of more opportunities before defender Daniel Cameron decided to show them how it’s done. The half back ran forward unmarked to get on the end of Malcolm Clark’s free-hit from the right and he crashed the ball low into the net to the keeper’s right to make it 3-1 with 71 minutes played. Connor Howe marked a very good individual performance when he added a fourth on 81 minutes. Howe exchanged passes with Daniel Madej on the left before confidently despatching the ball low into the net to make it 4-1.h.
Newtonmore 0 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel avenged their opening day Mowi Premiership defeat to Newtonmore with a 3-0 win in their 3pm throw up at the Eilan. ‘More defenders Steven Macdonald and Declan Brannan were both banned and injury continued to rule out Darrin Fowler and Drew MacDonald. Rory Kennedy returned to the side assuming his usual full back role. Iain Richardson went to wing back with Jamie Ross returning to the second team. Kinlochshiel were at full strength for the second successive Saturday - with Finlay MacRae, Duncan Matheson, Mark MacDonald and Conor Cormack making up a formidable defence - in what was arguably the tie of the first round. On a day when Newtonmore marked club stalwart Rob Ritchie being honoured with a BEM medal, they were also presented with a set of new set of strips from sponsors The Balavil Hotel which they wore on the day. The hosts fell behind to a John MacRae goal after just 2 minutes. Ali Nixon knocked down Donald Nixon’s ball from wide on the left and MacRae fired low into the net from the right of the D. ‘More went in search of a leveller and ‘Shiel keeper Josh Grant pulled off a great save as he stretched high to turn away Iain Robinson’s shot from wide on the right and he then dived to his right to deny Fraser MacKintosh late in the first half. Josh Grant then saved with his foot from Fraser MacKintosh whilst home goalie Owen Fraser turned away Ali Nixon’s drive by his left post at the other end. Keith MacRae added a second on 74 minutes as he ran onto John MacRae’s ball from the left. Keith MacRae’s initial shot was saved by ‘More keeper Owen Fraser but MacRae was quickly in to force the rebound into the net. It was a 24 hours that John MacRae will never forget as he had been up most of the night attending the birth of his second daughter and he marked the occasion with his second and ‘Shiel’s third goal 5 minutes from time. It was a great strike as MacRae turned on Donald Nixon’s free-hit from midfield and his superb back-hand effort from wide on the left went low into the net to make it 3-0. This was a good game to watch in the cold rain and Kinlochshiel had to work hard for the victory.
Kingussie 4 Fort William 0 Artemis Macaulay Cup holders Kingussie are safely through to the quarter-finals after beating Fort William 4-0 at the Dell. Kingussie boss John Gibson had Rory MacKeachan and Fraser Munro back and both started on the bench alongside James Hutchison although the latter had no real prospect of playing as he continues to be hampered by injury. Robert Mabon and James Falconer returned to the starting line-up and Lee Riddoch kept his place in the defence. Fort William were led by co-manager Adam Robertson as Victor Smith served a one-match touchline suspension following his red card during the draw against Kinlochshiel the previous week. Arran MacPhee returned to the side following suspension and he started at buckshee forward although he did later drop back to full centre. Lachie Shaw was still missing. Kingussie made a quick start to the game and a combination of Fort keeper Paul MacKay and the frame of his goal prevented the hosts taking the lead until the 19th minute. Ruaridh Anderson played the ball into Savio Genini’s feet just outside the D and the Kingussie skipper turned onto his forehand and hammered the ball into the roof of the net. Kingussie effectively sealed victory with two more goals late in the first half. Roddy Young found the net on 41 minutes, running onto a ball played over his head and he smashed a shot high into the net from a tight angle. James Falconer added a third a minute before the break. Roddy Young did the spade work as he took the ball on the wing before spreading play across goal, past the full back, and Falconer came running in to get on the end of it, sending the ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-0. James Falconer then turned provider on 51 minutes when he played a pass across the box. Savio Genini allowed the ball to run across his body before hitting it high into the net on his backhand. The match went flat during the closing stages but Kingussie’s work was done and they are a step closer to a return to Oban for this year’s Macaulay final. Kingussie and Fort William meet again this coming Saturday at the same venue but this time in the Mowi Premiership.
Oban Celtic 2 Kyles Athletic 4 Oban Celtic gave Kyles Athletic a scare before the Tighnabruaich men eventually ran out 4-2 victors in their noon throw up at Mossfield. Both sides were short of their recognised squad although Celtic’s Lennon Campbell returned whilst 2021 runners-up Kyles Athletic had Callum Millar back and he featured in attack. Roddy MacDonald took a place on the bench after just returning from a from a football trip to Leipzig. Kyles had reason to feel optimistic when, ahead of throw up, captain Innes MacDonald won the toss for the first time in seven matches. Lennon Campbell gave Celtic a 15 minute lead when he finished well from the right following a sweeping move forward. Kyles keeper John Whyte went for the ball with his hand but couldn’t keep the strike out. When referee Des McNulty awarded Kyles a penalty on 55 minutes, Ross MacRae sent the ball low into the net to the keeper’s right. Callum Millar turned home a rebound off the keeper following Ross MacRae’s strike from wide on the left on 65 minutes to put Kyles ahead for the first time in the tie and Millar scored again on 73 minutes when Celtic couldn’t clear Ross MacRae’s free-hit. Kyles were now in control and Roddy MacDonald, a substitute following his late return from a lesser sport visit to Leipzig, sent the ball high into the net on his back-hand from wide on the left following Max Carr’s 81 minute hit-in from the right to make it 4-1. However Celtic’s Scott Dempster tucked home a rebound off the keeper on 83 minutes to make the final score 4-2.
Kilmallie 1 Lovat 4 Kilmallie and Lovat played the first part of a cup double-header at the Canal Parks. Both teams were short of their usual side but Lewis Tawse returned to start at full centre in a revamped Lovat midfield. Lovat have started the season well and they took the lead through Greg Matheson’s rocket-shot from the right on 15 minutes. Stuart Callison’s effort from distance on 24 minutes ensured the sides would go into the break all-square. The match was played in very wet conditions at times and Lovat pulled away in the second half. Lovat introduced Duncan Davidson from the bench with Lewis Tawse pushing up front and the switch paid off as Tawse scored on 65 and 80 minutes. The goals came either side of Marc MacLachlan’s 70 minute strike which came when MacLachlan won possession at the edge of the D.. The sides meet at Balgate on Saturday in the cottages.com MacTavish Cup quarter-finals.
Inveraray 4 Col Glen 1 Inveraray came from a goal down to seal a 4-1 derby win over Col Glen in their 3pm throw up at the Winterton. Inveraray’s Lewis Montgomery was suspended for this one against the Mowi South Division 1 opponents. Former Skye Camanachd player Daniel MacDonald gave Col Glen a 34 minute lead with a great strike but Ally MacDonald levelled 5 minutes before the interval with a shot from distance. Inveraray took the lead for the first time in the tie a minute into the second half with Ross MacMillan scoring following Fraser Watt’s dummy and Fraser Watt on 70 and 80 minutes put the home side out of sight.
Aberdour 0 Bute 5 Mowi South Division 1 side Bute knocked Mowi National Division opponents Aberdour out of the Macaulay, winning 5-0 at Silversands. The Islanders started well with Craig Fisher scoring after 5 minutes and Scott Harvey added a second on 35 minutes. The Bute midfield of Marcus Planck, Ryan Craig and Craig McKay took a grip of the tie and Craig Fisher scored twice in two minutes on 49 and 50 to complete his hat-trick. The visiting forward line of Leon McMillan, Josh Cowan, Craig Fisher and Scott Harvey was moving the ball around nicely and Harvey got his second on 51 minutes as Bute netted three times in 3 minutes. Bute took the chance to bring on youngsters Rory McDonald and Liam Ferguson to get game experience at senior level.
Lochaber v Caberfeidh W/O Lochaber were unable to field a team for Caberfeidh’s visit to Spean Bridge so Cabers were given the tie.
Mowi National Division Glenurquhart 4 Strathglass 1 Glenurquhart beat neighbours Strathglass 4-1 in their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. John Barr gave the Glen a 9 minute lead with Connor Golabek doubling their interval advantage a minute before half-time. David MacLennan added his name to the scoresheet a couple of minutes after the restart with Connor Golabek getting his second on 65 minutes. Strathglass got some late consolation with Michael Stokes scoring just 6 minutes from time. The match doubled up for the MacDonald Cup postponed during the pre-season.
Single Team Club Competition – First Round Ballachulish 4 Cruachanside 3 (After extra-time) Ballachulish and Cruachanside served up a thriller at the Jubilee Park. There was little sign of the goal feast to come when the first half finished scoreless. However the second half was just 3 minutes old when Ally Banks gave Balla’ the lead. Kyle MacFarlane drew Cruachanside level on 56 minutes only for former Scotland international John MacDonald to put the home side back in front on 77 minutes. Another from John MacDonald and Cian MacPhee’s own goal both came on 90 minutes so Balla’ led 3-2 only for Ally Cameron to make it 3-3 a full 6 minutes into stoppage time. Referee Alex MacVicar then took the tie into an extra-time period and veteran John MacDonald completed his hat-trick to edge Ballachulish into the next round.

Glen MacKintosh returned for ‘More to give his side a 14 minute lead and Craig MacLeod increased their advantage on 48 minutes. Xander Ross added a third on 59 minutes to seal the win.
Skye Camanachd 3 Kingussie 0 The Skye Camanachd seconds were 3-0 winners against the Kingussie seconds in their 1pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. With no first team game, Skye were able to include Sam Macphee and Neil MacVicar on his return to fitness and they began to control the centre line after the restart. Kingussie were without the influential Lee Bain whilst Iain Fraser was with the first team. It was a wet and windy afternoon and Kingussie played with the elements in a goalless first 45 minutes The closest to a include included Cluanie Fraser forcing a great save from Skye goalie Calum Nicolson who parried Fraser’s shot from right of centre which was heading for the top corner of the net to the keeper’s left. At the other end, Kingussie custodian Craig Dawson first saved Ruaraidh MacLeod’s shot low by his left post before showing tremendous reflexes to keep out Taylor Matheson’s strike after Skye had worked the ball up the left. Peter Dickson was thwarted late in the first half when keeper Nicolson saved with his feet by his right post. Skye took the lead a couple of minutes into the second half. A nice passing move ended with Ruaridh MacLeod’s shot which Craig Dawson turned away for a corner on the Skye right. Archie Millar’s set-piece wasn’t dealt with by the Kingussie defence Taylor Matheson took a touch before slotting the ball low by the keeper from a central position inside the D. Skye had moved Ruairidh MacLeod from full forward to buckshee forward and he was becoming more influential. Macleod shot wide before forcing a Dawson save at the expense of a corner. Craig Dawson then palmed away an Angus Gilpin effort before Ruaraidh MacLeod’s strike fizzed past his right post. With Skye trio Connor Gilpin, Neil MacVicar and Sam Macphee dominating the midfield, the chances kept coming and Craig Dawson made a brilliant stop to parry one MacLeod effort which was heading for the top corner of the net to the goalie’s right. Kingussie had a penalty claim when Skye keeper Calum Nicolson appeared to try and sweep the ball away when lying on the ground but referee John Matheson waved away their claims. George Taylor Ramsay and Pavel Nagle were playing well in an increasingly over-worked Kingussie defence and there were only 5 minutes remaining when Ruaraidh MacLeod got Skye’s second goal with a low shot into the net. Unfortunately the goal came at a cost as MacLeod took an accidental knock in the act of scoring and was later confirmed to have suffered a broken ankle. Taylor Matheson got his second with a turn and shot high into the goal on the stroke of full time to round off the win.
Strathspey Camanachd 2 Kilmallie 1 Strathspey Camanachd defeated the Kilmallie second team 2-1 at Grantown Grammar School. Lovat 1 Strathglass 0 The tie between the Lovat reserves, Strathdearn Cup holders, and the Strathglass reserves at Balgate was brought forward to Friday 29 April 2022 with a 6.30pm throw up. There was a minute’s silence ahead of game following the passing of Finlay MacRae (Eskadale). Lovat started as favourites against their lower league opponents but despite pressure from the hosts, a scrappy first half ended goalless. Indeed it took until the final minute before player / manager Raymond Rennie lost his marker at the edge of the D to send the hosts though to the next round.

Kyles levelled on 52 minutes through Neil Nicholson’s low shot on the angle but, with just seconds remaining, Ewan Donnan scored his sixth goal of the season, direct from a corner, to send Inveraray through and knock the holders out at the first time of asking.

The ESA squad was selected from the five teams in the English Shinty Association, some of who had played Kilmory the previous year. Euan Gilmour got his second on 51 minutes with Alec Cunningham going on to complete his hat-trick when he found the net on 76 and 85 minutes.
Mowi North Division 1 Inverness 5 Glengarry 3 The Inverness first team held off a spirited Glengarry side to win 3-0 at the Bught Park. The weather conditions were such that this was always going to be a tough afternoon for the players and as well as the rain, the grass was longer than both teams would have liked. Glengarry almost took the lead in the opening minute when Steven Cameron won the ball in the centre of the park and he picked out Nick Dalgety who found Shaun Nicolson on the left but he blazed his shot over from 15 yards. However it was Inverness who took the lead on 24 minutes. Charlie MacDonald weaved his way forward and although his shot was saved by ‘Garry keeper Gordon MacDonald, Steven Bellshaw was on hand to tap the rebound into the net from just 3 yards out. ‘Garry levelled on 33 minutes when a Rhu MacDonald chipped a good ball over the Inverness defence, finding Shaun Nicolson free on the left and he slammed the ball inside Inverness keeper Dougie Rankin’s left post to make it 1-1. This was an open contest and, on 38 minutes, Charlie MacDonald’s shot looked to be heading for the net before the ball held up on the long, wet grass, inches from the goal line, but Steven Bellshaw reacted first to pounce on the ball to score. ‘Garry should have gone into the interval all-square when Shaun Nicolson was put through on goal by Nick Dalgety but he sliced his shot past the post. Inverness made a strong start to the second half and when Ewan Campbell found Charlie MacDonald on the right, he fired the ball inside the keeper’s right post to make it 3-1 with 49 minutes played. Inverness stretched their lead with a fortunate goal on 69 minutes. Steven Bellshaw, who was free on the right, “topped” his shot but what looked like a harmless effort went under keeper Gordon MacDonald’s feet and into the net to complete the Inverness man’s hat-trick. Referee John Angus Gillies awarded ‘Garry a penalty for hacking inside the D on 73 minutes. Shaun Nicolson stepped up but blasted the spot-hit over the bar. The visitors did pull a goal back on 75 minutes. Dougie Rankin saved Nick Dalgety’s shot but the ball was only half cleared and fell to Dalgety again inside the D and he picked out Rhu MacDonald free in front of goal and he tapped the ball home to make it 4-2. Steven Bellshaw scored his fourth goal of the game on 81 minutes, showing his class as he turned Matthew Ross before slotting the ball by the keeper. Glengarry were awarded a second penalty on 88 minutes when referee Gillies and the goal judge agreed that Inverness goalie Dougie Rankin had kicked the ball and Nick Dalgety blasted the spot-hit into the top left hand corner of the goal to make the final score 5-3. This was an entertaining match between two evenly matched sides. Steven Bellshaw turned in a man of the match performance although the whole Inverness forward line played well with Dougie Rankin pulling off some cracking saves in the home goal. Nick Dalgety played well for ‘Garry as did full centre Steven Cameron.
Mowi South Division 1 Tayforth 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 The Glasgow Mid Argyll seconds beat Tayforth 3-2 at Peffermill with all the goals coming in the second half.
