The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 29 April 2023 | |
30 April 2023 The Artemis Macaulay Cup second round ties are now known following the shinty action on Saturday 29 April 2023.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – First Round Oban Camanachd 5 Bute 0 Last year’s Artemis Macaulay Cup losing finalists Oban Camanachd’s bid to go one better this year began with a 5-0 beating of Bute at Mossfield. The Oban side went with a centre line of Daniel MacVicar flanked by Andy MacDonald and Jamie Forgrieve and they gradually took control of the game, taking the lead from the penalty spot on 27 minutes. Daniel Cameron was pushed in the back inside the D and referee Deek Cameron pointed to the spot. Louie McFarlane stepped up to fire an unstoppable penalty into the top corner of the net to the keeper’s left. The majority of the local support seemed to head for Ganavan for the meeting between Lochside Rovers and the Oban Celtic seconds but those present saw Daniel Cameron add a second on 32 minutes, turning the ball into the bottom corner of the net following Andy MacDonald’s corner. Another Andy MacDonald corner tested the Bute defence just 3 minutes later and when the ball broke out, Malcolm Clark ran away from goal before turning and lashing a 15 yard shot into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. It was a fantastic finish and Oban Camanachd took their three goal advantage into the break. Matthew Sloss smashed the ball into the roof of the net at the back post to make it 4-0 on 52 minutes and Daniel Madej, who had come on for an injured Daniel MacCuish after he had fallen awkwardly on his caman after a challenge from behind, sent a fine waist-high shot into the net on 67 minutes to make it 5-0. Gordon Currie in the Bute goal made some good saves over the 90 minutes whilst Oban custodian Cammy Sutherland had little to do.
Inveraray 2 Col Glen 0 Inveraray and Col Glen met for the third time this season with Inveraray winning again, 2-0 at the Winterton. Inveraray had Robert Wood and Ross MacMillan back and they took the lead though Allan MacDonald on 23 minutes. And that’s the way it stayed until a minute from time when Inveraray substitute Zander Kilmurray made it 2-0.
Kyles Athletic 6 Aberdour 0 Mowi Premiership side Kyles Athletic beat Aberdour from Mowi South Division 1 6-0 at Tighnabruaich. Conor Kennedy and Scott MacDonald’s hat-trick of goals had Kyles 4-0 ahead at Half-time. Finan Kennedy’s shot from distance and a fourth from Scott MacDonald made it 6-0. Kyles defender Callum Millar made his return from injury. Tom Bowerman in the visiting goal made some fine saves.
Skye Camanachd 2 Kingussie 4 Holders Kingussie had to come from two goals down to beat Skye Camanachd 4-2 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Ruaraidh MacLeod returned for Skye, and he started in attack. Neil MacVicar was also back and he took a place on the bench but Jordan Murchison missed out with a hamstring injury. Rory McGregor, Kieran Macpherson and Liam Borthwick lined up for the Kings after missing the previous week’s league win over Oban Camanachd but James Falconer was sidelined with 8 stiches in his finger from the Oban game whilst Roddy Young was at a wedding and James Hutchison was out with a hamstring injury. However, Thomas Borthwick was included for the first time in nearly two years – he suffered a serious knee injury in a 3-1 win over Newtonmore on 10 July 2021, also in the Artemis Macaulay Cup - and he took a place on the bench with Savio Genini and Owen Reid. It was sunny but cool as a deceivingly strong wind blew down the pitch and Skye opened with the elements in their favour, shooting towards the Skeabost end of the ground. The Islanders, still smarting from the previous week’s home defeat to Beauly, started well and Rory McGregor had to come smartly off his line to clear a dangerous ball into the D after just 10 minutes. However, just 3 minutes later, Skye took the lead. Ross Gordon dummied the ball to James Pringle who quickly played in Ruaraidh MacLeod in a central position, and he thumped the ball high into the net. Skye doubled their lead on 25 minutes. Sam MacPhee’s low corner from the right came into the D and defender Calum Grant ran towards the ball to clear but kicked it. Referee Calum Girvan had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and Ross Gordon smashed an unstoppable penalty over the keeper’s shoulder and Skye now led 2-0. Kingussie responded and Skye goalie Murphy Henderson used his feet to keep out Ruaridh Anderson’s snapshot. The tie flowed from end to end with Ruaraidh MacLeod firing across goal from James Pringle’s free-hit and then Iain Fraser sent the ball just by the keeper’s right post following Cameron Bremner’s hit-in. Lee Bain, perhaps crucially, pulled a goal back on 40 minutes. Alexander Michie, who captained the side in James Falconer’s absence, sent Bain down the left and he broke away from his marker before arcing his run towards the D and he tucked the ball home from close range. Ruaridh Anderson fired over with the final chance of the first half and Skye were dealt another blow when they lost influential full back John Gillies with a tight hamstring at the break. A reshuffle followed which included James Morrison going to full back with Jamie Gillies coming on. Kingussie introduced Thomas Borthwick after 54 minutes, replacing Iain Fraser, and he immediately forced Murphy Henderson into a save with his feet. Kingussie now had Liam Borthwick at full centre with Alexander Michie joining Lee Bain at the top of a two-two forward line. Kingussie were using the wind advantage to good effect and they pinned Skye back and when Thomas Borthwick played in a high corner from the right on 65 minutes, Lee Bain ran into the centre of the D, stretching high to knock the ball down and, agonisingly for the Islanders, it trundled by the keeper, just inside his left post to make it 2-2. Another Thomas Borthwick corner from the right saw Kingussie take the lead for the first time in the tie on 72 minutes. Ruaridh Anderson smacked a low shot goalwards and although Murphy Henderson saved well with his feet, Lee Bain was quickly in to turn the rebound over the line to complete his hat-trick. Kingussie went for the kill, and they sealed victory on 77 minutes. Ruaridh Anderson played a free-hit from the left across goal to recently introduced substitute Savio Genini who, with his back to goal, held off his marker as he allowed the ball to run across his body before turning and crashing a shot across the keeper, high into the net to the keeper’s right side to make it 4-2. It was a terrific finish in what was Genini’s first touch of the game.
Newtonmore 4 Fort William 0 Newtonmore are through to the next round after beating Mowi National Division side Fort William 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Eilan. ‘More took a firm grip of this tie in the first half and Aaron MacBean put them ahead on 8 minutes when he got into a good position and Fort keeper Stuart Disher was unable to get his hand to MacBean’s looping shot. However, Arron MacBean had to come off soon after with a tight groin whilst Fort William lost full forward Graham Campbell in the first half with a hamstring injury. Craig MacIsaac fired home a second on 22 minutes and when the keeper missed a high ball into the goal area a minute before the break, Iain Robinson was on hand to make it 3-0. It could have been more, but Craig MacIsaac failed to convert a first half penalty. Newtonmore dominated the second half but passed up several chances to add to their tally until 3 minutes from time when Craig MacIsaac scored his second goal of the game. The win sets up another Badenoch Derby with Newtonmore and Kingussie scheduled to meet in the second round at the Eilan on Saturday 24 June 2023.
Beauly 1 Lovat 1 (Lovat won 3-1 on penalties) Lovat claimed the local bragging rights, but only after a penalty shoot-out secured victory in their derby tie with neighbours Beauly at Braeview Park. Beauly had Angus Renwick back but Andrew Morrison was unavailable. The Lovat squad is returning to full strength but they were missing Graeme MacMillan. Lovat took the lead on the half-hour mark. Lewis Tawse delivered a hit-in from the left and which Beauly defender Ryan MacKay missed and Greg Matheson dug the ball by Beauly goalie Lee Dunbar on his right side to make it 1-0. David MacLean gave Beauly a deserved leveller on 61 minutes. Two substitutes combined as Callum McIver played Sandy Elrick hit-in from the right low across goal and MacLean turned the ball low into the net from a central position. With no further scoring, even throughout the extra-time period, referee Graham Cameron took the tie to penalties and with Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald in brilliant form, Lovat’s Craig Mainland crashed the decisive penalty into the roof of the net to confirm Lovat’s 3-1 shoot-out victory.
Kinlochshiel 4 Caberfeidh 1 Kinlochshiel came from behind to beat Caberfeidh 4-1 in their 2pm throw up at Rèaraig. Oliver MacRae, Archie MacRae and Jonnie MacAskill all returned to the ‘Shiel squad as did Duncan “WD” MacRae for his first top team appearance of the season. Cabers missed Ben MacDonald due to work commitments. Cabers took the lead through Kyle Grant after 20 minutes but with just 4 minutes of a tense first half remaining, Finlay MacRae drew Kinlochshiel level. Finlay MacRae has been hampered by injury this season and with Mark MacDonald slotting in well at full back, MacRae is relishing his outings in attack, and he got his second to put the home side 2-1 in front on 51 minutes. Zander MacRae on 73 minutes and Archie MacRae on 83 minutes rounded off the 4-1 win. Kinlochshiel will now have home advantage against Lovat in the last-eight of the competition. ‘Shiel and Cabers meet again at the same venue on Saturday, this time in the Mowi Premiership.
Glasgow Mid Argyll W/O v Oban Celtic Glasgow Mid Argyll were the first team into the quarter-finals as they were given a bye when a mixture of injury and player unavailability meant Oban Celtic were unable to field a team for their tie at Peterson Park. Oban Celtic’s next scheduled fixture is likely to be their Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round tie, also against Glasgow Mid Argyll at Peterson Park at the end of May when they should have players back. GMA will host Kyles Athletic in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals.
Strathdearn Cup – Second Round Newtonmore 3 Glenurquhart 1 Holders Newtonmore seconds saw off the Glenurquhart seconds 3-1 in their noon throw up at the Eilan. ‘More were without defender Rasmus Cheyne who suffered an arm injury against Skye the previous week. Brodie MacBean’s goal gave ‘More a 22 minute lead but Alfie MacLeod’s effort on 35 minutes made it 1-1 at the turnaround. Newtonmore won the game in the second half with Xander Ross scoring on 55 minutes before Brodie MacBean’s second, the goal of the match, made it 3-1 on 71 minutes. Glen MacKintosh put MacBean through and he launched an unsavable shot into the top corner of the net. The Newtonmore seconds now travel to Lovat in the quarter-finals later this month.
Skye Camanachd 3 Beauly 2 The Skye Camanachd colts came from behind to beat the Beauly colts 3-2 in a thrilling noon throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. After an even start, Skye keeper Calum Nicolson made a brilliant diving save to his left to palm away Leon MacLellan’s shot on the left from close range with the ball going out for a corner. It was Skye who took the lead on 17 minutes when good play from Charlie Latton got the Islanders forward and when Iain MacLellan’s strike from the right was saved with his legs by Beauly keeper Lennox Stewart, Taylor Matheson ran quickly in to turn the rebound home. Leon MacLellan levelled on 25 minutes, rounding the keeper to score and just 4 minutes later, Sean Stewart sent a blistering shot over the keeper’s right shoulder to give Beauly a 2-1 lead at the break. There were strong words in the Skye changing room at half time and the side responded a couple of minutes after the restart when Beauly failed to clear a free-hit and Archie Millar hammered the ball home from left of centre. The match was tousy at times and although Skye now had the bulk of the play, they didn’t find the winner until 6 minutes from time. Ian MacPherson picked out Shockie MacLennan with a corner from the left and the mother of all goalmouth scrambles ensued. With the Skye forwards and Beauly defenders all battling for the ball on the goal line, Shockie MacLennan got the last Skye touch to claim the winner.
Aberdeen University 2 Kilmallie 0 Willie Hunter’s double late in the first half game Aberdeen University a 2-0 win over the Kilmallie second team at Balgownie. Willie Hunter broke the deadlock on 41 minutes and he added a second straight from the throw up.
Lovat 3 Kingussie 2 The Lovat juniors came from two goals down to beat the Kingussie juniors 3-2 at the Dell. Lovat were without the suspended Lewis Bryson, and they fell behind to a Russell Menzies goal on 20 minutes. Kingussie were without key attackers Cal MacKintosh and Robert Shiells but Russell Menzies was proving an able replacement and he got his and Kingussie’s second on 65 minutes. However, Lovat turned the tie on its head with three goals in four minutes. Euan Ferguson halved Kingussie’s lead on 70 minutes and Seb Monkman made it 2-2 just a minute later. Then, on 74 minute’s, Lovat’s Euan Ferguson scored his second goal of the game to give the hosts a 3-2 win. Lovat will now welcome the Newtonmore seconds in the quarter-finals.
Kinlochshiel W/O v Lochaber The Lochaber second were unable to raise a team for their noon throw up with the Kinlochshiel seconds at Rèaraig so ‘Shiel were given a bye into the quarter finals. Kinlochshiel will meet Aberdeen University in the next round.
Lochcarron W/O v Strathspey Camanachd Strathspey Camanachd were unable to field a team for their tie at Lochcarron, so the Battery Park side were given free passage into the quarter finals. Lochcarron now have a derby meeting with the Skye seconds at Battery Park in the next round.
Lewis Camanachd W/O v Boleskine Lewis Camanachd reached the last-eight of the competition when Boleskine were unable to fulfil their tie at Shawbost.
Fort William WO v Strathglass The Fort William reserves were given a walk-over when the Strathglass reserves were unable to field a team for their meeting at An Aird. The Fort will now host Lewis Camanachd in the quarter-finals.
Bullough Cup – First Round Lochside Rovers 4 Oban Celtic 2 Lochside Rovers took the honours in the second team Oban Derby, beating the Oban Celtic seconds 4-2 at Ganavan. A big crowd gathered for this game, and they were treated to a great tussle between two local teams. Lochside Rovers player Craig MacMillan was unable to line-up against his former side though suspension but Oban Celtic’s Innes Jackson did face his former teammates. Craig Easton made a welcome return for Lochside and although Scott MacMillan and Gavin Stobbart also played, co-managers David MacMillan and Duncan MacMillan started nine players from the club’s under-17 side. Oban Celtic also had their share of starlets and they were on top for the first 15 minutes but the young Lochside defence held strong and the opening goal came at the other end where the experienced Gavin Stobbart scored a well taken goal. It remained 1-0 until a couple of minutes into the second half when Celtic’s Ewen Campbell equalised with a neat opportunist effort. Celtic enjoyed another good spell in the match but the experienced Scott MacMillan, whose big hitting was a feature, had Lochside flowing again, and Kyle MacFarlane scored a fantastic solo goal on 58 minutes to put his side back in front. And it was Kyle MacFarland again on 75 minutes with another well taken goal to make it 3-1. This looked to have settled the contest but, with just a couple of minutes to go, Innes Jackson scored from a rebound, after a decent Brian MacCallum save, to make it 3-2. This could have made for a nervy finish for Lochside but Gavin Stobbart, who started the scoring, rounded it all off with a minute remaining with a fine long range effort to make it 4-2. Lochside’s Scott Campbell turned in a man of match performance with Gregor MacDonald not far behind him. There were also impressive displays from Stephen Parr, Joe MacVicar and brothers William and Duncan MacEwan. The large crowd went home after witnessing a classic Derby encounter, but it was the Red and Black's day and they now travel to Tighnabruaich to play the Kyles Athletic second team in the semi-finals with the extra incentive, if it were needed, that the MKM Building Supplies, Oban Bullough Cup Final will be played at Mossfield.
Strachur-Dunoon 0 Kilmory 4 Kilmory progressed with a 4-0 victory against Strachur-Dunoon at the Strachurmore Sports Centre. Bruce Johnstone’s penalty on 12 minutes and David MacAlister a couple of minutes later got Kilmory off to a good start and Euan Gilmour on 23 minutes and again 3 minutes after the restart secured a 4-0 victory.
Uddingston 0 Kyles Athletic 10 The Kyles Athletic juniors were too strong for Uddingston, winning 10-0 at the Stepps Playing Field. Luke Thornton rattled up a hat-trick with goals on 5, 11 and 21 minutes and Connor Guidici made it 4-0 with goal a couple of minutes after. Luke Thornton scored his fourth goal of the game on 29 minutes so Kyles led 5-0 at the interval. Roan MacVicar struck a double on 47 and 63 to make it seven and a brace from Andy Gayner on 67 and 90 minutes, either side of Anna Nicolson’s first goal for the Kyles second team on 70 minutes, took Kyles into double figures.
Tayforth 3 Inveraray 1 Tayforth are though to the next round after beating the Inveraray second team 3-1 at Peffermill. Tayforth led through Niall Arnott on 21 minutes but Neil Campbell equalised just 6 minutes later. Donald MacInnes scored on 40 minutes to give Tayforth a 2-1 lead at the break and Sean Taylor’s goal on 62 minutes made the final score 3-1.
Mowi National Division Lochaber 3 Strathglass 0 In the only match to go ahead in the Mowi National Division, Lochaber took advantage of their rivals’ inactivity by defeating Strathglass 3-0 at Spean Bridge to go second in the table. Lochaber led through Pat Toal’s early strike on 7 minutes whilst a quick-fire brace from Ben Delaney on 70 and 74 minutes made the final score 3-0. Lochaber now only trail leaders Kilmallie on goal difference.
Mowi North Division 1 Inverness 1 Glengarry 1 League leaders Glengarry dropped a point, drawing 1-1 with the Inverness first team at the Bught Park. ‘Garry’s Shaun Nicolson, who scored six times in the win over the Kingussie seconds the previous week, wasted no time in finding the back of the net again as he gave his side a 13 minute lead. However, with just 4 minutes remaining, former Uist Camanachd player Ewen Campbell found the net to earn Inverness a share of the points.
Mowi South Division 2 Aberdour 1 Bute 1 The Aberdour seconds and the Bute seconds drew 1-1 at Silversands. Bute led late in the first half when William Boag scored after 42 minutes. However, Aberdour, who were without the suspended Tom Aitchison, snatched a point when Logan Adam levelled just 3 minutes from time.
