The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 26 June 2021 | |
27 June 2021 The 2021 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup competition is underway but the shinty schedule was decimated due to covid issues on Saturday 26 June 2021.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup - First Round Northern Section Glenurquhart 2 Strathglass 0 Glenurquhart were 2-0 winners in their tie against Strathglass, a 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. The sides met in their Annual MacDonald Cup clash during the preseason when Strathglass were 4-2 winners. However this time the Glen got revenge. One of the most significant changes since the previous meeting was Lachie Smith’s returned at full back for the Glen, allowing Ally MacKintosh to push forward to full centre where he was very influential. It was a warm day and the ground was hard and the game definitely missed the edge supporters would have brought to the occasion. Both sides have changed quite significantly since pre-covid times and were full of young players throughout. The Glen took the lead on 23 minutes when David Maclennan took a pass from Connor Golabek before firing past Adam Todd in the visiting goal. A neat passing move created the Glen’s second goal just 5 minutes into the second half with Jed Stoddart firing a rasping shot home to make it 2-0. Adam Todd was a busier keeper than Stuart MacKintosh whilst both teams were missing the inclusion an all-out scorer.

Beauly Shinty Club issued a statement saying they had been made aware of a covid case within their playing members so have moved to postpone all club activity for at least a week. The statement concluded by saying that although the outbreak at the club is minimal, the connection the club has to the local community, and the duty of care they have to other clubs in shinty, the only choice available was to suspend activity for a minimum of seven days.

Kilmallie P Kinlochshiel P Covid issues have prevented the Kilmallie first team from taking the field this season and just when their match against Kinlochshiel at the Canal Parks looked to be going ahead; it was called off because of covid concerns on the ‘Shiel side. Kinlochshiel issued a statement confirming that due to an ongoing covid scare in the area, the club has postponed the first team game against Kilmallie, the second team game against Glengarry and the ladies’ game against Skye. The statement went on to say that one of the ‘Shiel coaches was in close contact with a work colleague whose family are showing covid symptoms. They have been tested but the result will not be known until Monday so club activity has ceased until the results are known.
Mowi Senior League B Kingussie P Newtonmore P The first Badenoch derby of the season, which was due to take place at the Dell, was postponed because of covid issues in the Newtonmore area. Newtonmore issued a club statement notifying supporters that due to a positive covid case within the club, and some other players having to isolate, the Mowi Senior League B fixture with Kingussie has been postponed. The club stated that the health and wellbeing of members and the community are a priority at this time before wishing everyone affected a speedy recovery.
Caberfeidh P Lovat P Lovat and Caberfeidh were due to meet at Castle Leod for the second time in 10 days. Lovat won 4-0 last time around but covid restrictions have delayed Caberfeidh’s chances of revenge. Caberfeidh have suspended all cub activity until 5 July 2021 at the earliest.
Mowi Senior League C Oban Celtic P Oban Camanachd P An increase in covid cases in Oban led to the postponement of the match between Oban Celtic and Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. This was to be the first Oban Derby of the season but the game was called off early in the week. Oban Celtic were the designated home side and they thanked supporters for their understanding. They issued a club statement confirming they had to take the difficult decision to suspend all club activity for one week with a review to be taken thereafter. The statement went on to say that with the rise of covid in the area, and with several members already being affected either by isolation or awaiting test results, they felt it was in the best interests of members, and indeed the wider community, to suspend all activities in order to mitigate the risk of spreading covid. The statement concluded by urging everyone to follow Government guidance and, more so, to consider others with the actions we all take.
Aberdour 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 8 A strong first half performance earned Glasgow Mid Argyll an 8-0 victory over Aberdour in their 3pm throw up at Silversands. The surface was slippery for both sides but a sharper, fitter GMA side quickly settled into the game. Former Oban Celtic player Ally McKerracher gave GMA a 3 minute lead. The goal was well-worked and McKerracher found space at the back post where he slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. McKerracher sent a volley just a couple of feet past the post soon after and it would have been a spectacular finish had it gone in. GMA were moving the ball around nicely and Oliver MacRae netted on his left side to make it 2-0 on 7 minutes. Ally McKerracher got his second on 35 minutes and, a couple of minutes later, Craig Anderson, who lined up in attack after starting the season at full centre, added his name to the scoresheet. There was some good inter-play between the visiting forwards before Oliver MacRae got his second on 39 minutes and Craig Anderson got another a minute before the break to make it 6-0 at half-time. Aberdour introduced Angus Thorburn, who was just back from his holidays, at half-time. The GMA forward play was a joy to watch and Ally McKerracher completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes short of the hour. Aberdour battled hard and stemmed the tide for a while but couldn’t prevent James MacLeod from making it 8-0 just 10 minutes from time.

Ronan Melens pulled Strathglass level on 35 but Duncan Anderson put Beauly back in front 3 minutes after. A Robbie Stokes goal on 42 minutes meant it was 3-3 at the end of a goal-ridden first half. Strathglass pulled away in the second half with Robbie Stokes getting his second on 52 minutes to give his side a 4-3 lead. A second from Steven Hyslop on 55 minutes and an effort from Donald Fraser on 69 minutes completed the 6-3 win, sending Strathglass through to the next round.

Ritchie Irvine rounded off the 9-0 win just 3 minutes from time. Newtonmore’s young team played very well and Strathspey were limited to just one shot on target during the whole match. Duncan MacPherson was outstanding at half back for ‘More whilst young Rasmus Cheyne at left wing back also caught the eye. Sorley Thomson was excellent up front. This was a good sporting contest despite being a derby and despite the defeat; Strathspey will take positives from the experience against their higher league opponents.

The goal boosted Kyles and Cairn Limbert and Stewart Taylor also scored for the second successive Saturday on 62 and 68 minutes. David Martin rounded off the scoring just 3 minutes from time.
