The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 24 September 2022 | |
25 September 2022 Kingussie moved a step closer to the Mowi Premiership title, it’s as you were at the top of the Mowi National Division, whilst there was a Mowi South Division 2 title success the Bute second team following the shinty action on Saturday 24 September 2022.
Mowi Premiership Oban Camanachd 1 Newtonmore 0 Louie MacFarlane scored just 5 minutes from time to give Oban Camanachd a 1-0 victory over Newtonmore in their 1.30pm throw up at Mossfield. Oban pair Daniel Cameron and Daniel MacVicar missed out through suspension whilst Evan MacLellan and Connor Howe were unavailable. Jamie Anderson was given a start on the wing. Newtonmore were missing Conor Jones. Youngster Rasmus Cheyne was given a start in defence with fellow youngsters Brodie MacBean starting up front and Euan Dingwall on the bench. Oban Camanachd lost Malcolm Clark after just 9 minutes when he took a blow to the knee. The tip of the club left a deep gash which later required four stitches. Scott Robertson came on in defence with Louie MacFarlane going up front in a move which would pay dividends before the final whistle. Blair MacFarlane and Michael Russell had a great battle in the middle of the park and Daniel Madej and Daniel Cameron were proving to be real handful for experienced Newtonmore defenders Steven Macdonald and Rory Kennedy, but the contest remained goalless at the break. The hosts replaced Jamie Anderson with Callum MacMillan, giving the 16 year old his Oban Camanachd debut. Young MacMillan made his mark, none-more-so than when the ball came to Newtonmore’s Fraser MacKintosh at the back post. MacKintosh had a free shot at goal and looked sure to score but Callum MacMillan dived in with a wonderful blocking challenge. Oban Camanachd’s final change saw Jordan Kerr replace Scott MacMillan on the hour. Newtonmore enjoyed their best period in the game from the 50 to 75 minute mark but they couldn’t get the goal they wanted. Cammy Sutherland was the busier of the two keepers with Oban Camanachd’s efforts in attack not forcing any notable Kenny Ross saves. However, with just 5 minutes remaining, Oban Camanachd’s Louie MacFarlane won the game. Blair MacFarlane sent the ball forward from midfield and David Cameron got to it first. Cameron slipped possession to Louie MacFarlane on the left and, from 15 yards range, he produced a good finish on his backhand. Oban Camanachd saw out the remaining minutes to take both points and they stay fourth in the division.
Kingussie 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Kingussie moved a step closer to retaining the Mowi Premiership title, and a first Grand Slam since 2003, when they beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. Kingussie were missing Louis Munro and Lee Bain whilst James Falconer remained on the bench. Ryan Borthwick played in attack. GMA travelled without goal threat Ewen Fraser but John Don MacKenzie returned to take a place on the bench, coming on midway through the first half. GMA were forced into an early change when Oliver MacRae went off unwell so Craig Anderson took over in midfield. Roddy Young’s shot on the half-turn from a central position on 7 minutes got the Kings off to a good start. Ryan Borthwick looked lively in his attacking role and he finished from the left of the D, following a sweeping move, to double Kingussie’s advantage on 33 minutes. Then, just a minute later, James Hutchison pushed forward from midfield to smash the ball low into the net from a central position. Ryan Borthwick hit a great first-time strike on 73 minutes to make it 4-0 following Roddy Young’s low ball from the left.
Kilmallie 2 Kyles Athletic 1 Two goals just either side of the half-time interval gave hope to Kilmallie’s survival chances as they came from behind to beat Kyles Athletic 2-1 at the Canal Park. Kyles travelled on the back of a run which had seen them lose their previous five consecutive matches whilst Kilmallie desperately needed both points to keep their slim hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Kilmallie went into the game without suspended duo Stuart Callison and Ben MacKinnon and the last thing they needed was to fall behind to a Roddy MacDonald goal after just 2 minutes. However the outcome of the match turned on two goals just either side of the break. With half-time just 4 minutes away, Jay McLeod chipped the ball into the goal area from the left wing. Innes MacDonald, in goal for Kyles in place of John Whyte, knocked the ball down but Calum MacDougall caught it in the air, sending the ball into the roof of the net to level the match. Then, the second half was just a couple of minutes old when Martyn Cameron scored what proved to be the winner. Aidan Love played a corner to the back post where Martyn Cameron brought the ball down before striking on the half volley across the keeper. Kilmallie remain bottom of the division although they are now just one point behind Fort William and Glasgow Mid Argyll. Fort William’s remaining matches are at home to Kingussie and away to a GMA side who have five games remaining. Kilmallie’s final match is against Oban Camanachd at Mossfield on Saturday 8 October 2022 but with the Fort and GMA still to meet, Kilmallie’s inferior goal difference makes an escape from relegation unlikely.
Fort William 0 Lovat 3 Lovat stay in the title race after beating Fort William 3-0 in their 3pm throw up at An Aird. Fraser Heath gave Lovat a 3 minute. Marc MacLachlan’s low shot was saved by home keeper Paul MacKay, but Fraser Heath met the rebound in the air, finishing nicely. It was Fraser Heath again with Lovat’s second on 36 minutes. The move started with some nice passing in midfield before the ball was played to Greg Matheson out wide. Matheson sent a long diagonal pass to Fraser Heath, and he finished well again, this time one-on-one with keeper MacKay. Lovat remain 10 points behind league leaders Kingussie, but they have three games in hand.
Mowi National Division Strathglass 0 Beauly 4 Beauly scored a 4-0 derby success over Strathglass to remain top of the division following their noon throw up at Cannich. Callum Flynn gave Beauly an early advantage with goals on 2 and 11 minutes whilst Ross Forbes made it 3-0 at the break with an effort on 28 minutes. Calum Morrison rounded off the win on 63 minutes.
Glenurquhart 1 Skye Camanachd 3 Ross Gordon grabbed a hat-trick as Skye Camanachd remain two points off the top of the table with a game in hand after beating Glenurquhart 3-1 at Blairbeg Skye started slowly against a stuffy and physically strong Glenurquhart side, but they took the lead 3 minutes before the break when Ross Gordon hit a low drive to beat Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh who had a fantastic first half, keeping out three or four net-bound shots. Skye would have gone two up had it not been for another excellent Stuart MacKintosh stop, saving a high strike from Ross Gordon. Skye doubled their lead on 50 minutes with an excellent goal which came from a Jamie Gillies corner and was finished by Ross Gordon with a first-time low drive. Skye’s Will Cowie had to make a visit to Raigmore Hospital after being hit on the arm and tempers boiled over with some players taking matters into their own hands at times. Glenurquhart pulled a goal back on 65 minutes. Skye keeper Murphy Henderson saved with his foot following a corner. Referee Martin MacLean pointed to the spot with Skye claiming the keeper’s foot was planted on the ground. David MacLennan sent the spot-hit high into the net. Skye finished strongly and their fitness looked good despite the recent lay-off. Ross Gordon completed his hat-trick, sealing victory in the process, cracking another low drive home to restore the Islanders two- goal cushion on 78 minutes. Skye had their own claim for a penalty during the game when Ross Gordon was wiped out by keeper MacKintosh with a sliding challenge but the referee waved away their pleas. Veteran Chris Rose was excellent at wing centre for Skye with Ross Gordon always dangerous and making a match-winning contribution.
Inveraray 6 Oban Celtic 0 Third placed Inveraray stay in the title and promotion race after beating Oban Celtic 6-0 at the Winterton. Fraser Watt on 25 minutes and Ewan Donnan a couple of minutes later made it 2-0 at the interval. Allan MacDonald on 59 minutes and a second from Fraser Watt a couple of minutes after made it 4-0 with Ruaraidh Graham adding a fifth on 76 minutes. Ross MacMillan returned from a heel injury suffered in the Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup Final defeat to Beauly to score against his former club, making it 6-0 a couple of minutes from time.
Mowi North Division 1 Kingussie 1 Inverness 0 The Inverness first team’s title chances suffered a blow when they lost 1-0 against the Kingussie second team in their noon throw up at the Dell. The only goal of the game came after 28 minutes when Michael Slimon finished off a good passing move, beating Inverness keeper Dougie Rankin from close range, from just left of centre. Kingussie had 13 year old goalie Hayden Taylor-Ramsay to thanks for some very good saves. Inverness finished the game a player short when Charlie MacDonald was sent off by referee Calum Girvan.
Glengarry 4 Lovat 4 Glengarry and the Lovat juniors drew 4-4 at Craigard. The hosts were missing several key players including Matthew Ross through suspension and they fell behind when Lovat player / manager Raymond Rennie scored the only goal of the first half on 31 minutes. Shaun Nicolson opened his account 3 minutes after the restart to pull Glengarry level but, just a couple of minutes after, Raymond Rennie got his second to put Lovat back in front. This was turning into a personal duel between Rennie and Shaun Nicolson with the former Scotland international going on to complete his hat-trick with two quick-fire late goals on 81 and 82 minutes and ‘Garry now led 3-2. An unfortunate Fraser Cameron own goal made 3-3 on 85 minutes but still the scoring wasn’t over. Lewis Bryson looked to have won it for Lovat when he scored a minute later but with the clash a couple of minutes into stoppage time, Glengarry veteran Ken Henderson made it 4-4. The draw leaves ‘Garry a point behind leaders Inverness although they have played two games more than the Highland Capital side. This could prove to be a valuable point for Lovat as the potential remains for two teams to be relegated to bring the division down to ten teams for next season.
Fort William 4 Caberfeidh 0 The Fort William colts scored twice in each half to overcome the Caberfeidh colts 4-0 in their noon throw up at An Aird Alan Knox on 6 minutes and Greig Kelly on 15 minutes made it 2-0 at the break. Alfie Duncan on 48 minutes and Lachie Shaw on the stroke of full-time made the final score 4-0.
Newtonmore 10 Glenurquhart 0 The Newtonmore seconds still harbour hopes of retaining their league title after crushing the Glenurquhart seconds 10-0 in their 1pm throw up at the Eilan. Evan Menzies put ‘More ahead on 7 minutes and Craig MacLeod, who later went off with a hand injury, cut in from the left to make it 2-0 on 13 minutes. Evan Menzies blasted home from Glen MacKintosh’s free-hit on the half-hour whilst Glen MacKintosh turned scorer on 42 minutes. MacKintosh pushed the ball home from close range and there was still time for Evan Menzies to get his second and make it 5-0 on 44 minutes, turning home a rebound after Glen keeper Iain Macleod had kept out Glen MacKintosh’s rocket-shot. Glen MacKintosh got his second on 52 minutes when he found space to receive Charlie Ferguson’s free-hit before hammering the ball hit into the goal. A clearance out of the D from keeper Iain Macleod caught team-mate TJ Van Loon around the eye area and he was forced off for a hospital visit. There was a touch of fortune over Martin Hall’s goal on 59 minutes when his low cross from the right ended up in the net. Glen MacKintosh completed his hat-trick with another clinical finish on 66 minutes before substitute Michael Ritchie, who had been denied by two fine Iain Macleod saves, scored from the right on 73 minutes. Michael Ritchie got his second a couple of minutes into stoppage time, jumping high above the keeper to turn the ball home from close range to make it a perfect ten.
Kinlochshiel P Lochcarron P Lochcarron were unable to raise a team for their derby against the Kinlochshiel reserves at Rèaraig. The match will be rescheduled and Lochcarron have been docked two points for failing to fulfil the fixture.
Mowi South Division 1 Col Glen 3 Bute 1 Col Glen are just a point away from being crowned Mowi South Division 1 champions after defeating second placed Bute 3-1 at Glendaruel. Col Glen were 3-1 winners when the sides met at the Meadows at the end of August and, after a tense opening 45 minutes, they took the lead 3 minutes after the restart through Andrew MacVicar. Dan MacDonald eased home nerves when he made it 2-0 on 52 minutes. Bute were missing the suspended Scott Harvey, but they pulled a goal back on 65 minutes through Ian McDonald. However, when referee Iain Kennedy awarded the hosts a 73 minute penalty, Scott MacVicar stepped up to do his usual efficient job from the spot. Should Col Glen secure the title, they are eligible to go forward to the Mowi National Division promotion play-off spot which will take place if an eligible club wins Mowi North Division 1.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Cruachanside 2 Cruachanside came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team in their 2pm throw up at Peterson Park. GMA led through Ross Brown on 22 minutes with James MacLeod doubling their advantage on the hour. The sides meet again this coming Saturday when Cruachanside are the hosts.

Callum MacIver made it 3-1 on 15 minutes with Finlay MacLennan extending their lead with efforts on 35, 42, 48 and 56 minutes to make it 7-1. Kyle MacDonald on 65 minutes and Scott MacLean’s double on 68 and 71 minutes made it double figures. Finlay MacLennan took his count to seven goals with efforts on 76 and 85 minutes, either side of Fraser Cameron’s 82 minute goal. After the match, Camanachd Association President Steven Mackenzie presented the Mowi North Division 2 trophy to Beauly captain Tom Cairns.
Aberdeen University 0 Inverness 2 The match between Aberdeen University and the Inverness second team was switched from the Woodside Sports Complex to the Bught Park. A goal in each half from Skye MacKintosh on 37 minutes and Billy MacLeod on 73 minutes gave Inverness victory.
Mowi South Division 2 Oban Celtic 0 Bute 4 The Bute juniors clinched the Mowi South Division 2 title after beating the Oban Celtic juniors 4-0 at Ganavan. Rory McDonald gave the Islanders a 14 minute lead with Ruairdh Soane adding to their tally with strikes on 20 and 30 minutes to make it 3-0 at the break. Craig Speirs made it 4-0 a minute after the hour meaning Ardnamurchan cannot catch Bute’s points tally.
Ardnamurchan 2 Aberdour 1 Herbie Patterson scored twice as Ardnamurchan beat the Aberdour colts 2-1 at Strontian. Ard’ went in front on 18 minutes when Seamus Buchanan played in a great corner that fell to Herbie Patterson just outside the box and he took a quick touch before planting a fine shot onto the top left corner of the net. Aberdour looked to have claimed a point when Alec Mitchell made it 1-1 with a clean strike on 73 minutes. However, with just 9 minutes remaining, Herbie Patterson scored his sixth goal in Ardnamurchan’s last three matches. Freddie Paterson lofted a perfect ball into his brother’s feet, again just outside the D, and Herbie Patterson turned his man before sending a backhand swing past keeper Tom Bowerman and into the bottom corner of the net. It has been a good season for Ardnamurchan who finish the season in second place.
(All throw ups are at 2.30pm unless the match report states differently)
WCA Round Up There were several Women’s Camanachd Association fixtures played over the course of the weekend.
Mowi National Division Skye Camanachd 1 Badenoch 6 Badenoch retained the Mowi National Division title after beating second placed Skye Camanachd 6-1 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Badenoch’s only dropped point this season came in a draw with Lochaber whilst Skye’s only blemish was a beating by Badenoch at the Dell. This meant Skye needed to win to take the title whilst a draw would suffice for Badenoch. The teams sounded eachother out during the early stages but it was Badenoch who struck first on 15 minutes through Kirsty Deans. Just as they did in the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final, Skye fought back and Rhianna Kirk levelled 5 minutes later. Badenoch regained the lead through Kirsty Deans on 24 minutes and this time they would stay in front. Zoe Reid added a brace on 42 and 54 minutes whilst it was fitting that Kirsty Deans, who has been such an influential player for Badenoch this season, would round off the win with goals on 59 and 62 minutes. A trophy presentation followed, and the victory means Badenoch have done the double, adding the league title to the Mowi Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final won earlier in the month.
