The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 24 August 2019 | |
25 August 2019 Fort William secured the Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup, Lovat stay top of the Mowi Premiership, Aberdour secured the Mowi South Division 1 title and Kilmory are Mowi South Division 2 champions following the shinty action on Saturday 24 August 2019.
Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup Final Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Fort William 3 (After extra-time) Fort William lifted the Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup for the second time in three seasons but it took extra-time to finally see off a determined Glasgow Mid Argyll side 3-2 at An Aird. Jonny MacAskill was able to play for GMA but he will miss this Saturday’s crucial Mowi National Division match at Skye after passing through the disciplinary points threshold. MacAskill started on the bench alongside former Kinlochshiel team-mate Oliver MacRae. Sean Cameron remained on the Fort William injury list but Victor Smith’s side were otherwise along usual lines. With the venue for the final decided at the start of the season, Fort William were able to enjoy home advantage, ironically after playing all of this year’s previous rounds away from home. Fort William did the early attacking with Lewis Morrison going close and Lachie Shaw going even closer as he hit the bar. GMA keeper Robert Dunnings then kept his side on level terms; with an excellent double-save; first thwarting Arran MacPhee and then Lachie Shaw from the rebound. Whilst the opening quarter belonged to Fort William, the Glasgow side began to come more into it was the turn of their keeper to shine as Paul MacKay saved well from Craig Anderson. Fort William hit the woodwork for a second time when an Arran MacPhee effort came off the junction between post and bar and, despite a number of close things, the first half ended scoreless. Despite now playing into the breeze, Fort William went back on the attack from the restart, so much so that when the opening goal came at the other end on 54 minutes, it was against the run of play. GMA player / manager Mark Bain played the ball low across from the left and although Callum McLay’s initial effort was blocked by a defender, he took the ball to his left side and took a touch before shooting through the keeper’s leg from close in to make it 1-0. The goal seemed to energise GMA and they went in hunt of a second but found Fort keeper Paul MacKay equal to their efforts. It was now Fort William’s turn to score against the run of play as Alexander MacMillan drew them level on 61 minutes. MacMillan took a Calum Shepherd pass from the right and his low 20 yards strike from right of centre may have taken a deflection as it beat keeper Robert Dunnings on his right side and the final was now tied at a goal apiece. GMA’s response was instant and they were back in front a minute later with a similar finish to his opener from the lively Calum McLay who this time turned home a low ball from the right. Mid Argyll went for what would have been a trophy winning third goal and Paul MacKay made another brilliant stop, this time turning away a drive from captain Jamie McFadyen which was heading high into the net. Fort William co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson introduced Padraig McNeil for Lewis Morrison for the final 20 minutes and he repaid their faith with just 6 minutes remaining when he scored the equalising goal. Arran MacPhee played the short to Victor Smith and although his initial shot was well-saved by Robert Dunnings, Padraig McNeil turned the rebound home from the edge of the box to make it 2-2. With no further scoring, referee Ross Brown, who was in control throughout, took the final to an extra-time period. Fort William went ahead for the first time in the final on 95 minutes. The excellent Robert Dunnings made a diving stop from Jack Fraser’s low strike but Padraig McNeil was again onto the loose ball and he kept his nerve to finish low into the net on his back-hand to make it 3-2. After the final whistle, the Fort William players and coaches agreed that captain Arran MacPhee would be joined by James Tangney, who is battling back to fitness after an accident abroad, to collect the trophy. Tangney was Fort captain for the previous two seasons and is current club captain. The presentation was made by former Fort William and Scotland player John MacLeod, who works for sponsors Liberty British Aluminium, with Camanachd Association President Keith Loades also in attendance.
Mowi Premiership Caberfeidh 1 Oban Camanachd 3 Oban Camanachd scored three times in the first quarter of the match to beat Caberfeidh 3-1 in their 1pm throw up at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh’s absentee list included Jamie MacKintosh and Ben MacDonald. Callum MacKinnon came back into the starting line-up and whilst Scott Mclauchlan and Gavin Mclauchlan were also back, they started on the bench. Oban Camanachd’s Willie Neilson remained on the injury list whilst Keith MacMillan was unavailable. Skipper Daniel Cameron wasn’t risked as he is a booking away from triggering a suspension which would rule him out of the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final against Newtonmore on Saturday 14 September 2019. Scott MacMillan was free to play but his booking in the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final has triggered a two-match suspension and he pays a heavy price as he is not only ruled out of this coming Saturday’s trip to Lochaber but also the club’s next scheduled match which is the Camanachd Cup Final. Oban Camanachd made a number of changes for this one. Craig Easton came in at half back with Blair MacFarlane lining up at centre and Lorne Dickie going out wide. Scott MacMillan and Malcolm Clark were at half forward with Andrew MacCuish and Gary McKerracher up top. The Oban Camanachd bench was Daniel Cameron, Daniel MacVicar, Daniel MacCuish and David Lafferty. After the disappointment of last weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup Final defeat to Kingussie, it was important Oban Camanachd made a good start and Scott MacMillan’s rocket-shot from the edge of the D on 9 minutes came off the post to the keeper’s left. However Scott MacMillan did give Oban Camanachd the lead on 11 minutes when his shot from distance took a bounce and deceived keeper Ewan Pilcher. Malcolm Clark made it 2-0 on 18 minutes. Aidan MacIntyre player a corner in and Andrew MacCuish used his big reach, doing really well to touch the ball down, and Clark’s half-volley flew into the corner of the net. The Oban side added a third goal on 21 minutes. Lorne Dickie’s shot from the right was saved by keeper Pilcher but broke free on the angle where Andrew MacCuish was first to react and he scored and the Oban side looked comfortable. Caberfeidh moved Kevin Bartlett to full centre at half-time with Ally MacLennan going to full forward. Oban Camanachd defender Daniel Madej did well against Craig Morrison but the Cabers man got away on 50 minutes to continue his incredible scoring sequence. Kevin Bartlett’s fierce, knee-high shot was well saved by Cameron Sutherland and Craig Morrison got the rebound to make it 3-1. After playing the first two games of the season in defence in place of his brother Blair Morrison, who had a dislocated shoulder at the time, Craig Morrison has now gone on to score in the next eighteen successive matches, having missed the recent defeat to Kinlochshiel to attend his sister’s wedding. Midway through the second half, Daniel MacVicar’s 18 yard shot looked to be heading for the top corner before swerving wide. David Lafferty, who did well after coming on for Blair MacFarlane, surged forward and when the ball broke to Lorne Dickie, his shot hit the post and Daniel MacVicar sent the rebound over the top from inside the D. Whilst it was a comfortable win for Oban Camanachd, manager Stephen Sloss will be concerned by a couple of injuries. Daniel Sloss, who did a great first half marking job on Kevin Bartlett, suffered a blow to the side of the knee and had to be helped off the field whilst Gary McKerracher suffered a gash to the finger when he was caught after a double-swing from Kevin Bartlett.
Kyles Athletic 0 Lovat 2 Lovat stretched their unbeaten league run to seven matches with a 2-0 victory over Kyles Athletic in their 3pm throw up at Tighnabruaich. Kyles had Callum Millar at full back which released Roddy Macdonald to play up front. Grant Irvine and Donald Irvine were both unavailable. Lovat’s Martin Mainland was still out injured and Calum MacAulay, Fraser Heath and Lorne MacKay were all unavailable. Second team players James Grieve and Dylan MacCulloch joined Lewis Bryson on the bench and Cammy MacMillan was given his first start at senior level after his goal in the win over Kilmallie the previous week. Lovat broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when referee Lachie Wood awarded them a penalty. Kyles Athletic keeper John Whyte made a brilliant save from Callum Cruden’s strike on the edge of the box but when Lewis Tawse ran in to tap home the rebound, the keeper lay on the ball. Greg Matheson stepped up and put the penalty into the bottom corner of the net, to the goalie’s left. Lovat doubled their lead with a really well-worked goal a minute before the break. Lewis Tawse gathered the ball at the corner flag before playing a long ball across goal to the far side where Greg Matheson picked possession. Matheson played a one-two with Marc MacLachlan before lifting the ball high into the net with a half-swing from just outside the box. Lovat had to rely on keeper Stuart MacDonald in the second half when he made an unbelievable double-save, eventually tipping the ball around the post with his hand whilst diving across his goal line.
Newtonmore 5 Inveraray 0 Newtonmore took advantage of Kingussie’s inactivity to go second in the league after beating bottom side Inveraray 5-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Eilan. Newtonmore fielded Steven Macdonald at wing centre whilst Jamie Robinson, Conor Jones and David MacLean were on the bench. Inveraray missed Gary MacPherson and Nick Crawford whilst Ally Munro, Allan Cameron and player / manager Ruaraidh Graham were held in reserve. Newtonmore opened the scoring on 11 minutes when Iain Robinson, whose pace cause the Inveraray defence problems throughout, created space on the right to shoot home. Evan Menzies squeezed the ball by his marker from right of centre to make it 2-0 on 28 minutes whilst Ewen Fraser added a third on 42 minutes and there was only going to be one winner. Ewen Fraser got his second a couple of minutes into the second half when he took a pass from the industrious Drew MacDonald and his shot rose over a defender into the net to make it 4-0. Drew MacDonald’s shot from distance into a crowded goal area ended up in the net to make it 5-0, completing the scoring on 56 minutes. Jamie Robinson took over from Evan Menzies on the hour whilst David MacLean and Conor Jones later replaced Steven Macdonald and Andy MacKintosh. Newtonmore are now a point ahead of third placed Kingussie but they have played a game more. Inveraray’s top level status is slipping away and they have only two games to save their season; away to both Kingussie and Oban Camanachd.
Kilmallie P Kingussie P The 3pm throw up between Kilmallie and Kingussie at the Canal Parks was postponed following the passing of former Kilmallie youth player Matthew Duncan.
Mowi National Division Strathglass 3 Oban Celtic 4 Oban Celtic go fifth in the National Division after winning 4-3 against Strathglass at Cannich. Josh Fraser for the hosts and Oban Celtic’s Craig MacMillan were both suspended for this one. Strathglass fielded Adam Todd in goals with Ally MacAdams at full forward. The Oban side were minus Ally McKerracher, Andy MacDonald, Michael MacKinnon, Peter Currie and Scott Turnbull. Keegan Mcphee was at full back whilst 15 year olds Jigme Jones and William MacEwan were on the bench with the latter coming on for Jamie Anderson, who took a knock to the hand on 15 minutes, and he went onto the wing. Some good forward play, with Lennon Campbell at full forward and Daniel MacMillan, Scott Burnett, and Ross MacMillan playing off him, allowed Oban Celtic to create a number of early opportunities but they went a goal down on 32 minutes. The ball was played up to Ally MacAdams who turned Keegan Mcphee and Cameron Butler punished some hesitancy in the visiting defence to score. However Oban Celtic drew level just 4 minutes later. Ross MacMillan was fouled as he made his way up the wing, 35 yards out on the right. Ross MacMillan took the ball down from the set-piece and he scored to make it 1-1 at half-time. Oban Celtic took the lead 3 minutes into the second half. Scott Burnett’s corner came out to William MacEwan who found Ross MacMillan and although keeper Todd saved his shot, Lennon Campbell turned home the rebound. It was Lennon Campbell again on 53 minutes. Ross MacMillan’s hit-in on the left came to Campbell who held the ball up before turning and sending a low 20 yard shot past the keeper. Steven Hyslop made it 3-2 on 69 minutes when his lofted effort from distance evaded Oban Celtic keeper Iain MacFarlane. Jigme Jones came on with around 20 minutes remaining after Johnny MacNeil suffered a cut under the chin. When Ross MacMillan was fouled on 74 minutes, he took the free-hit himself, playing a one-two with before firing a 20 yard strike low into the net to make it 4-2. Oban Celtic picked up knocks to the likes of Neil Carmichael (foot) and they sat too deep during the closing stages. Strathglass had switched Scott Douglas to full centre where he held influence and Douglas picked out Steven Hyslop on the stroke of full-time and he turned his marker 20 yards out on the left and he found the net from a tight angle to score his second goal of the game. George MacMillan was best for Oban Celtic, putting in a terrific shift and helping the less experienced players around him.
Mowi North Division 1 Glengarry 4 Kinlochshiel 0 League leaders Glengarry maintained their title push with a 4-0 victory over the Kinlochshiel seconds at Craigard. Kinlochshiel turned in a dogged first half performance and the contest was scoreless at the interval. However the second half was just a minute old when David Rodgers put ‘Garry ahead. Nick Dalgety made it 2-0 on 51 minutes and Ken Henderson added a third just 10 minutes later. ‘Garry skipper Rhuairaidh MacDonald completed the scoring 5 minutes from time. Glengarry host the Skye Camanachd second team this coming Saturday whilst the title destination looks as if it will be decided over their final two fixtures which are both against title rivals Newtonmore.
Newtonmore 3 Kingussie 1 The Newtonmore reserves came from behind to beat the Kingussie reserves 3-1 in their noon throw up at the Eilan. Newtonmore had Scott Chisholm back whilst there was also a place for David Fraser. Ryan Spinks was missing. Kingussie included Rory MacGregor at buckshee back and James Hutchison at centre although the two swapped roles as the game progressed. Kevin Thain was on the bench. There was a big crowd for this one on a warm, muggy day and Kingussie took the lead on 5 minutes when Jordan Reid ran in from the right to score. Kingussie won the ball from the restart and went on the attack. However Newtonmore broke straight back up the field and Sorley Thomson equalised on 6 minutes with his effort deceiving keeper Russell Menzies. Newtonmore introduced Michael Russell on 28 minutes as he makes his way back to fitness with an eye on next month’s Camanachd Cup Final. And Russell put ‘More ahead on 34 minutes, steering the ball into the net from a tight angle on the left. It was Michael Russell again on 44 minutes who gave ‘More a 3-1 interval lead before coming off at half-time in a managed return although he did reappear for the final 20 minutes of the game. This was at times a fierce, physical encounter at times and Andrew Buchan received a booking and could have had another whilst Declan Brennan and James Hutchison exchanged pleasantries before there was a flash-point 3 minutes from time when referee Ewan MacDonald red carded ‘More’s Calum Stewart and Kingussie’s Lee Riddoch for an off-the-ball tussle. Stewart will pay a heavy penalty as the ensuing suspension means he will miss this Saturday’s Strathdearn Cup Final against the Fort William second team at the Bught Park Inverness. ‘More’s David Fraser had an impressive game. Newtonmore’s Glen MacKintosh may also have been involved as both he and Michael Russell have been replaced on the club’s “named ten” list. However MacKintosh suffered an injury set-back on Friday evening.
Lovat P Aberdeen University P The game between the Lovat seconds and Aberdeen University at Balgate will be rescheduled.
Mowi South Division 1 Lochside Rovers 0 Aberdour 3 Lochside Rovers and Aberdour met in a top of the table clash at Mossfield. Aberdour have led the division for a number of weeks and reigning champions Lochside were their only real challengers. Aberdour knew a win would give them the title ahead of their final match at Ballachulish. Although Lochside went into the clash ten points behind, they had four matches in hand and were on an impressive fourteen match winning run. With George Easton and Andrew Pearson, assisted by Gareth Evans, taking Lochside for the remainder of the season, they were without Craig Easton and Blair MacFarlane who travelled with Oban Camanachd. Michael MacQueen returned from injury to take a place on the bench. Dougie MacDonald was in goal with Gavin Stobbart and Chrissie MacMillan in defence and Ross Campbell at full centre. Aberdour were without Cammy McCue who was suspended for this test but they were otherwise along familiar lines with David Mackenzie going to half back and Jack Mitchell moving to wing centre. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given what was at stake, Aberdour made a nervous start and it took some good defending, particularly from young Iain Fullerton, to prevent Lochside taking the lead in the opening quarter. Lochside’s Lewis Buchanan came off injured midway through the first half although he did return later in the game. The visitors came much more into it as the half went on but there were no goals during what was becoming a more and more physical first half. Lochside were reduced to eleven players on 50 minutes when they lost Scott Robertson. Robertson, who collected a first half booking, received a second yellow card following an off the ball incident involving Ruairidh Reid and, after consultation between referee Des McNulty and the goal judge, Robertson received a second yellow card. Aberdour immediately made the most of their one man advantage with Angus Thorburn taking a ball from the wing and hammering it past keeper Dougie MacDonald on his left side and give his side a 52 minute lead. Aberdour made great use of the extra man with David MacKenzie utilised between the defence and midfield where he was able to sweep up any loose balls. Clear chances were at a premium though with Aberdour’s David McDougall going close on a couple of occasions. With 15 minutes remaining, Aberdour manager Lisa MacColl brought on Tom Bowerman in place of Ruairidh Reid, who’d suffered a couple of heavy challenges, and Bowerman, who played in goal until the end of last season, went on to play his part in the victory. Aberdour got their title clinching second goal with 10 minutes remaining when Jack Mitchell found space and, with the keeper unable to adjust his feet, Mitchell’s low shot went into the net to make it 2-0. Lochside had a late flurry from the restart with Aberdour keeper Craig Callachan ensured there wouldn’t be a nervy finish as he used his body to block a shot from a tight angle at the expense of a corner. Tom Bowerman put gloss on the win with a goal on the stroke of full-time. Bowerman, one of Aberdour’s longest serving players, was played in by Angus Thorburn and he ran through to beat keeper Dougie MacDonald to the ball before rounding the goalie and knocking it into the net to make it 3-0 to the delight of the large visiting support and referee Des McNulty blew for time almost straight from the throw-up. The win, Aberdour’s first at Ganavan, and more importantly their first senior league trophy, gave boss Lisa MacColl the perfect 40th birthday present and the Fife side, who were only founded in 2001, will be presented with the league trophy following their match at Ballachulish which is scheduled for Saturday 21 September 2019. Aberdour also have National Division aspirations but they must wait until the North 1 title race is over to see whether they will have to negotiate a play-off match should Glengarry win the league. Next up for Lochside is a trip to Tayforth this coming Saturday. The Oban side then round off the season with four consecutive matches over four Saturdays starting with Col Glen’s visit to Oban on Saturday 21 September 2019 before trips to Kyles Athletic and Ballachulish, concluding with Taynuilt in Oban.
Taynuilt 6 Kyles Athletic 1 Tighnabruaich had been scheduled to host two matches but, on Friday afternoon, the clash between the Kyles Athletic colts and Taynuilt was reversed to the Taynuilt Playing Field with a 12.30pm throw up. And it was Taynuilt who powered to a 6-1 victory with a sparkling performance. Kyles took the lead through Kyle Mcmartin on 5 minutes but Billy Irvine equalised just a minute later. Zander Kilmurray on the half-hour and Craig MacIntyre on 42 minutes made it 3-1 to Taynuilt at the break. Zander Kilmurray got his second on 72 minutes and Jamie MacFarlane made it 5-1 just 3 minutes later. Billy Irvine’s second goal of the game on 78 minutes rounded off the impressive 6-1 victory.
Inveraray 5 Col Glen 3 The Inveraray colts moved off the bottom of the table after beating Col Glen 5-3 at Inveraray. This was a must-win match for Inveraray as they battle against relegation. Both teams started brightly and created several chances before Inveraray settled and, with home advantage, they began to take the upper hand. With Campbell Watt’s tireless running and Euan McMurdo’s experience, Inveraray were able to carve several good chances with Andrew McMurdo culpable for wasting one notable opportunity on the half hour mark when he went clean through on goal. Col Glen also attacked but the Inveraray defence mostly stood firm, well-marshaled by Colin Campbell and Kenneth Kirkhope, and it finished goalless at the break. Inveraray came out of the blocks quickly from the start of what was to be an action-packed second half. John MacKenzie, from throw up, played a square pass to Kenneth Kirkhope who drove the ball up the line to Campbell Watt. The ball was moved on quickly on to Andrew McMurdo who found his twin brother Euan McMurdo with a lobbed pass. Euan McMurdo controlled the ball well; taking one touch to compose himself, then, under pressure, he pushed the ball into the top corner of the net to give ‘Aray the advantage with 46 minutes played. Inveraray doubled their lead on 52 minute. Andrew McMurdo found Campbell Watt who turned his man and dribbled towards the goal, and, from far out, Watt coolly slotted the ball past the keeper to put ‘Aray two up. Inveraray added a third just 4 minutes later. Some good work from Andrew McMurdo inside the D saw him battle for possession and then flick it past the keeper and Campbell Watt was on hand to tap the ball home for his second of the game. Col Glen then applied a 10 minute period of intense pressure which saw them score two goals in 4 minutes. The first came on the hour when Andrew MacVicar, who usually plays in defence, found himself with time around 15 yards from goal and he fired the ball into the top left corner to give the visitors a way back into the game. Col Glen pulled another goal back just 4 minutes after when Andrew MacVicar scored his second goal of the afternoon following a goalmouth scrabble and it was now 3-2. Inveraray now needed to show some composure although they still looked dangerous in attack. The hosts scored again on 73 minutes. Andrew McMurdo beat his man before firing a shot, low and hard, with the ball going in at the near post, off the keeper, to make it 4-2. Inveraray restored their three-goal cushion a couple of minutes later when Campbell Watt found the bottom left corner of the goal from the edge of the D to complete his hat-trick and make it 5-2. Andrew MacVicar also completed his hat-trick on 81 minutes, this time from the penalty spot, to make the final score 5-3. The win means the Inveraray seconds move off the bottom of the table at the expense of their Glasgow Mid Argyll counter-parts with the sides meeting in a crucial clash on Saturday 21 September 2019.
Mowi North Division 2 Lochcarron 6 Inverness 0 Lochcarron stay in pole position in North 2 after beating the Inverness second team 6-0 at Battery Park. Alasdair Shillaker opened the scoring on 7 minutes and a quick-fire double from Gregor Cushnie on 15 and 16 minutes made it 3-0. Crisdean Finlayson added a fourth on 24 minutes and a second from Alasdair Shillaker on 39 minutes made it 5-0 at the break, putting Lochcarron out of sight. Inverness rallied though and Gregor Cushnie completed his hat-trick on 82 minutes with the only goal of the second half. Lochcarron can still be caught in the title race by Strathspey and the sides meet at Battery Park, in the home team’s final match of the season, on Saturday 7 September 2019. A win or draw from that clash will guarantee Lochcarron the title but a Strathspey victory coupled with two points against Kilmallie would give them the title. The game completes the season for Inverness.
Strathspey Camanachd 8 Lewis Camanachd 0 Strathspey Camanachd remain very much in the title hunt after overcoming Lewis Camanachd 8-0 in their 1.30pm throw up at Grantown Grammar School. Strathspey’s Stewart Sloss was suspended whilst Lewis travelled under-strength. The hosts took an early grip of the match with Struan Ross on 6 minutes and a debut goal from former Newtonmore player Chris Sellar on 9 minutes giving them early command. Chris Sellar got his second on 21 minutes to give Strathspey a 3-0 lead at the break. The ex-Newtonmore theme continued throughout the game and John MacKenzie made it 4-0 a minute after the restart. Chris Sellar completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes and Mark MacDonald made it 6-0 on 72 minutes. A fourth from Chris Sellar on 74 minutes and another from Mark MacDonald just 5 minutes later rounded off the scoring. Lewis Camanachd complete their season at Boleskine this coming Saturday.
Kilmallie P Beauly P The noon throw up between the Kilmallie and Beauly second teams at the Canal Parks was postponed following the passing of former Kilmallie youth player Matthew Duncan.
Mowi South Division 2 Kilmory 1 Glenorchy 0 The much-anticipated title-decider between Kilmory and Glenorchy took place at MacRae Park. The sides went into this 2pm throw up level on points and although Glenorchy had the better goal difference, the rules stated a draw would trigger a play-off match to decide the trophy destination. Kilmory took the title with Alister MacArthur scoring the only goal of the match on 18 minutes. Referee Robert Baxter awarded the hosts a penalty after Kilmory full forward Hal Jones and Glenorchy full back Findlay Ross battled for possession at the edge of the box. As Jones turned and was about to shoot, Ross fell onto the ball, putting himself in a dangerous position, and the referee pointed to the spot. Designated penalty taker Alister MacArthur stepped up and did his usual efficient job, with his clean strike going above the keeper’s head and into the net. Glenorchy created chances to draw level but they found Kilmory keeper Steven Gilmour and his defence in top form as they played their part in the title-winning victory.
WCA Round Up There were a number of Women’s Camanachd Association fixtures with most of the matches taking place on Sunday 25 August 2019.
