The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 23 July 2022 | |
24 July 2022 There were a number of exciting shinty matches on Saturday 23 July 2022.
Mowi Premiership Kingussie 3 Newtonmore 3 Kingussie dropped their first point of the season when they drew 3-3 with neighbours Newtonmore in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. The teams, led by captains Savio Genini and Conor Jones, were piped onto the field with, as well as two important league points and the local bragging rights, the annual Sir Tom MacPherson Trophy at stake. Kingussie manager John Gibson opted for a defence of Robert Mabon, Rory MacKeachan, Calum Grant and Kieran MacPherson with Fraser Munro, Liam Borthwick and Cameron Bremner across the midfield. James Hutchison, Ryan Borthwick, Lee Bain and Louis Munro made up a strong bench. Newtonmore co-managers Norman MacArthur, Evan Cheyne and David Cheyne gave Craig MacIsaac his first start in a forward line which also included Conor Jones, Iain Robinson and Fraser MacKintosh. Brodie MacBean, Max Campbell and Ian Richardson were held in reserve. Kingussie made what is becoming their customary quick start and they took the lead after less than 2 minutes. Liam Borthwick won the ball in midfield and Ruaridh Anderson’s strike forward went by Steven Macdonald and as Roddy Young gathered possession of the left, the ball broke to Savio Genini and he crossed low into the middle where James Falconer spun and smashed an unstoppable shot over keeper Kenny Ross to make it 1-0. Newtonmore had the chance to level when Fraser MacKintosh found Iain Robinson and he rounded keeper Rory McGregor but Kieran Macpherson, minus his stick, slid in to stop the ball crossing the line. Referee Martin MacLean pointed to the spot but Rory McGregor saved Steven Macdonald’s penalty with his feet and the chance was gone. The league leaders doubled their advantage on 22 minutes when Roddy Young scored his 28th goal of the season. Ruaridh Anderson spread play out to the right where Savio Genini found James Falconer. Kenny Ross made a good save above his head to deny Falconer a second goal but Roddy Young was quickly onto the rebound as challenged Rory Kennedy before holding off Steven Macdonald and scoring from a tight angle on the right. However, Iain Robinson opened his account on 28 minutes Steven Macdonald’s clever reverse pass allowed Craig Ritchie to send the ball long to Craig MacIsaac on the right. MacIsaac played the ball across to Iain Robinson who made just enough space to turn and send a fine shot from distance which went inside the keeper’s right post. Kenny Ross made a couple of saves before a lung-bursting run from Robert Mabon, covering more than half the field, set up a shooting chance for James Falconer but his effort from distance went wide. Kingussie restored their two-goal cushion on 62 minutes. Rory MacKeachan’s ball out of defence was played down the right by James Falconer and Roddy Young kept the move going to Savio Genini. When Genini’s ball inside to Ruaridh Anderson was cleared back out to him on the right, Genini sent a back-hand drive across the keeper and into the net to make it 3-1. Kingussie went back on the attack to try and kill the contest but ‘More stood firm and they pulled a goal back just 4 minutes later. A great ball up-field from Michael Russell found Craig MacIsaac who crossed the ball in from the left and with Calum Grant trying to clear; Iain Robinson won possession before spinning away on the right and shooting high into the goal. It was “game on” and Newtonmore tails were up and Rory McGregor did well to thwart Craig MacIsaac following Steven Macdonald’s weighted ball into the D whilst at the other end, Kenny Ross used his legs to save James Falconer’s bouncing shot. Newtonmore completed their comeback with just 9 minutes remaining. Substitute Brodie MacBean played the ball in from the right to Iain Robinson who turned and fired into the top corner of the net at the second attempt from around the penalty spot to make it 3-3 and complete his hat-trick. There were chances at both ends before referee Martin MacLean brought shinty’s greatest derby to an end with honours shared until the next time. The sides went to a penalty shoot-out to determine the destination the Sir Tom MacPherson Trophy. Newtonmore went first and Steven Macdonald scored, banishing memories of his earlier miss. Kingussie named the same penalty takers in the same order as in their Scottish win over Beauly but Kenny Ross saved with his feet to deny Kieran Macpherson so ‘More led 1-0. Conor Jones pulled his penalty past the keeper’s left post and Ruaridh Anderson struck his spot-hit to the keeper’s right, going in of Ross’s leg, to make it 1-1. Craig MacIsaac stuck his penalty over the keeper’s right shoulder before Roddy Young blasted the ball down the middle to make it 2-2. Rory McGregor made a great stop under the bar to turn away Iain Robinson’s effort before Savio Genini crashed the ball into the roof of the net to give the Kings a 3-2 advantage. Newtonmore now needed to score so when Rory McGregor saved again, this time from substitute Brodie MacBean, Kingussie couldn’t be caught and there was no need for Rory McGregor to take their last spot-hit. Kingussie captain Savio Genini was presented with the Sir Tom MacPherson Trophy by Lady Jean MacPherson.
Oban Camanachd 4 Lovat 1 Oban Camanachd turned in a sparkling second half performance to beat Lovat 4-1 at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans welcomed back Scott McKillop, Daniel MacVicar, Ross Campbell and Daniel Madej with the latter starting on the bench. However Scott MacMillan served a one-match suspension for a disciplinary points accumulation whilst Connor Howe and Evan MacLellan were on holiday. Lovat’s Greg Matheson faces a spell on the sidelines with an arm fracture whilst Callum Cruden was sent off playing for the club’s second team the previous weekend. The red card adds to his disciplinary points accumulation meaning he will be banned for five second team games and cannot feature for the senior side until the suspension is served. Lovat boss Jamie Matheson was forced into an early change when Scott McKillop’s swing accidently caught Marc MacLachlan on the side of the face and he lost a couple of teeth. MacLachlan visited the local hospital but returned to the field in the second half. Daniel MacVicar scored a wonderfully well worked goal on 10 minutes. MacVicar started the move when he dropped into midfield to exchange passes with Blair MacFarlane before finding to Scott Robertson on the wing. Robertson sent the ball up the line to David Cameron and Ross Campbell ran to the front post to flick the ball on. With Daniel MacVicar continuing his run from the middle of the park to the back post, he showed great composure as he flicked the ball by the advancing Lovat keeper into the corner of the net to make it 1-0. Lovat came back into the game, but they couldn’t breach the Oban Camanachd defence with Daniel Sloss, marking Lovat danger-man Fraser Heath, and Craig Easton, both outstanding. When they did get shots on goal Lovat found Cammy Sutherland in inspired form and he made a couple of great saves, one in particular with his club denied Fraser Heath. There was a massive melee inside the Oban Camanachd D on 62 minutes and it seemed as if Daniel MacVicar was penalised for a push with referee Willie MacDonald pointing to the spot. Fraser Heath took the penalty and although he didn’t strike the ball as cleanly as he’d have liked, the accuracy of his hit took sent the ball into the corner of the net with the ball spinning in off Cammy Sutherland’s right foot. Oban Camanachd introduced Daniel Madej and Innes Jackson for Ross Campbell and Louie McFarlane and this seemed to lift the side and they regained the lead just 3 minutes later. Daniel Madej sent a good ball across goal from wide on the right and Malcolm Clark came in at the back post to crash a great shot into the roof of the net. Malcolm Clark got his second and Oban Camanachd’s third with 10 minutes remaining when, following Daniel Madej’s free-hit after Innes Jackson had been fouled, Clark ran onto the ball before sending a glorious 25 yard drive high into the top corner of the net past Stuart MacDonald to make it 3-1. The hosts introduced Jamie Anderson for Scott Robertson during the later stages of the game and Daniel Madej sealed the win with the goal of the match on 83 minutes. Madej met Scott Robertson’s high ball, above his head; smashing an unstoppable volley over the keeper to make it 4-1. The win lifts Oban Camanachd above Lovat to fourth in the table although Lovat have games in hand.
Fort William 0 Caberfeidh 4 Caberfeidh moved clear of the relegation zone after beating Fort William 4-0 at An Aird. Kevin Bartlett on 23 minutes and Craig Morrison just 3 minutes later gave Cabers a 2-0 interval advantage. Craig Morrison went on to complete his hat-trick after finding the net on 47 and 90 minutes.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup - Semi Final Col Glen 0 Beauly 8 Beauly will play Inveraray in this year’s Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup Final after the green & whites defeated Col Glen 8-0 at the Jubilee Park, Ballachulish. David MacLean gave Beauly a 6 minute lead with Euan MacCormick adding a second on 26 minutes. Robbie Brindle’s quick-fire double on 43 and 45 minutes put the tie beyond Col Glen. Sean Stewart added two more on 50 and 64 minutes to make it 6-0 whilst David MacLean got his second a minute later. Calum Flynn rounding things off on 82 minutes to set up next month’s final clash with Inveraray. Craig Scott was the match referee.
Mowi National Division Skye Camanachd 4 Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd scored twice early in each half to beat Strathglass 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at a wet Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye manager Kenny Macleod named an unchanged side as the Islanders looked to bounce back from two cup defeats. Strathglass player / manger Donald Fraser returned after missing the previous week’s defeat to Glenurquhart but he was without several players including keeper Alan Todd, Michael Stokes, Scott Douglas, Steven Hyslop, Colin Birnie and Ruairidh Strachan. Skye attacked from the throw up and when the visitors failed to clear out of defence, Ross Gordon turned the ball home to give Skye a 40 second lead. Ross Gordon then turned provider as his ball from the left picked out Taylor Matheson and the Scotland under-17 player made it 2-0 with just 3 minutes played. Skye enjoyed most of the first half pressure but were unable to add to their tally and they were almost made to pay on the stroke of half-time when Penri Jones spurned a great chance to half the deficit at the back post. The constant rain continued throughout most of the game and referee Iain Kennedy awarded Skye a penalty a minute after the restart. Stand-in keeper Allan MacLeod came forward to clear a ball inside the D but the ball came off his foot. Will Cowie sent a perfect penalty low by the keeper. Skye had pushed John Gillies forward and he made it 4-0 a couple of minutes later. The goal owed much to Ross Gordon’s persistence to win possession to the left of the D and Gillies struck the ball low into the net. With nine league games still to play, Skye now climb to third in the table and they visit second placed Lochaber on Saturday.
Oban Celtic 2 Glenurquhart 1 Oban Celtic beat Glenurquhart for the second time this season, winning 2-1 in their clash at Ganavan. Oban Celtic manager Dougie MacIntyre was able to include Kieran Gallagher and Iain MacKechnie but Craig MacMillan started a four-match suspension. The Glen had Connor Golabek and Lachie Smith available again. Ewen Campbell gave Celtic the lead on 37 minutes and it remained 1-0 until late in the match. Referee Graham Cameron awarded the home side a penalty on 81 minutes and Lennon Campbell stepped up to score from the spot. Oban Celtic opted to sit in and protect their lead for the final minutes. Glenurquhart did pull a goal back through Connor Golabek with a couple of minutes remaining but Oban Celtic took the points with a 2-1 win, just as they did at Blairbeg in June. Craig MacDougall and Kieran Gallagher were both excellent for the home side who welcome bottom side Aberdour on Saturday.

However Sandy Leiper got what proved to be the winner with another excellent finish on 90 minutes to send Kilmory through to the final where they will play the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team on Saturday 27 August 2022. Lachie Wood was the semi-final referee.

Skye Camanachd 1 Newtonmore 7 The Newtonmore seconds are still very much in the title race after beating the Skye Camanachd seconds 7-1 in their noon throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye made a bright start but ‘More soon got into their rhythm and, following a nice passing move, Glen MacKintosh’s 12 minute strike spun into the net off Skye keeper Calum Nicolson to open the scoring. Martin Hall saw a low shot saved after a run across the pitch before the visitors added a second on 15 minutes. The excellent Charlie Ferguson played in a corner from the right which reached Craig MacLeod at the back post and he crashed the ball over the keeper’s shoulder and into the net. Newtonmore’s early control was confirmed on 16 minutes. Ritchie Irvine’s long free-hit came to Glen MacKintosh who calmly rolled the ball home to make it 3-0. Glen MacKintosh then turned provider as his clever pass picked out Evan Menzies on the right of the D on 29 minutes and he made no mistake. ‘More had a decent penalty claim soon after when, following a great run, Martin Hall darted into the D and was wiped out by keeper Calum Nicolson but referee Iain Kennedy waved away the claims and the blue and whites had to settle for a 4-0 interval lead. Whilst the weather was favourable in the first half, there was constant rain for most of the second period but Glen MacKintosh completed his hat-trick within seconds of the restart after Martin Hall and Evan Menzies combined. A spectacular volley from substitute Tristan Ross made it 6-0 on 52 minutes and the traffic continued mainly towards the Skye goal. Tristan Ross shot wide on 66 minutes from a rebound after Calum Nicolson saved with his legs from Evan Menzies who was played in by Glen MacKintosh. Craig MacLeod then made a good run forward, playing a one-two with Glen MacKintosh, but keeper Nicolson saved again with his legs. Tristan Ross got his second with 10 minutes remaining. Rasmus Cheyne’s ball forward from left to right found Ross who beat the keeper at his left post. Skye gained some consolation in the final minute when Iain MacInnes stretched high to turn home a rebound in front of goal.
Caberfeidh 1 Lovat 2 The Lovat seconds edged out the Caberfeidh seconds 2-1 at Castle Leod. With just 4 minutes gone, David MacLennan played in James MacPherson with a superb defence-splitting pass and MacPherson lifted the ball by a helpless Kingussie keeper Craig Dawson to make it 1-0. Alfie MacLeod doubled the Glen’s lead on 21 minutes, turning James MacPherson’s pass into the corner of the net to the keeper’s right. Kingussie switched to a two-two formation in attack and the second half was just 3 minutes old when, after a Kingussie hit-in from the left wasn’t cleared, Cluanie Fraser evaded a challenge and ran at the Glen defence before scoring across the keeper on his back-hand. However, David MacLennan scored from close range on 69 minutes after James MacPherson’s shot from the right had been saved. Just a couple of minutes later, David MacLennan got his second and Glen’s fourth when the home defence failed to clear a corner from the left. Uddingston actually took the lead through Neil Sutherland on 12 minutes. The visitors were forced into an almost inevitable substitution on 15 minutes when John Turnbull landed awkwardly on the hard surface and injured his back. A reshuffle ensued with Les Kinvig coming on a full back with the rest of the back line made up of the energetic Hannah MacDonald, Joe MacVicar and usual keeper Robbie MacKay in front of goalie Allan Duffy.
