The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 21 May 2022 | |
22 May 2022 There was mixture of league and cup shinty action on Saturday 21 May 2022.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup – Semi-Final Skye Camanachd 1 Caberfeidh 5 Caberfeidh will play Kingussie in this year’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final, their first MacTavish Final since 1937, after they swept aside Skye Camanachd 5-1 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. After three Saturdays without a game, Skye manager Kenny Macleod had a full squad to choose from with the exception of Sam Macphee who is in Australia. This was a third MacTavish semi over his six seasons in charge for Cabers boss Jodi Gorski who started Craig Morrison despite the effects of a slight hamstring strain. Piper AB Connor led the teams onto the field before referee Graham Cameron signalled a minutes silence for what was Skye’s first match following the death of Chieftain Donnie Martin. Both sides wore black armbands as a mark of respect. In a nice touch pre-match, referee Graham Cameron, on behalf of himself and his father and goal judge Willie, presented Skye Camanachd Chairman Thomas Wilson with a goal judge vest embossed with Donnie Martin’s name. Skye created the better early chances and it took a diving Iain McCall save to keep out James Pringle’s shot after Somhairle MacDonald had played the speedy forward through. Skye were forced into a change when Martin Pringle was withdrawn with a hamstring injury. Danny Morrison came on in midfield with Ross MacKinnon dropping into defence. Skye went close again on 35 minutes when Jordan Murchison’s head-high shot went just wide of the keeper’s right post and they also had a first half penalty claim turned down. However Caberfeidh’s Kieran MacPherson started to take control of the midfield and, on 43 minutes, when Craig Morrison’s ball from wide on the left was only cleared as far as Kevin Bartlett on the right, he turned quickly and although Skye keeper Murphy Henderson got a hand to Bartlett’s shot, he couldn’t keep the ball out. It went from bad to worse for Skye straight from the restart when Kieran MacPherson’s long ball forward came to Craig Morrison who held off John Gillies before touching the ball past Ross MacKinnon and slipping past the on-rushing keeper to make it 2-0. Despite the arrears, Skye had been playing well but they need to score next and their plans went totally awry just seconds into the second half when Blair Morrison’s ball out of defence found Craig Morrison in a central position. Morrison spun away from John Gillies before running in on goal and touching the ball home. It proved a double blow for Skye as John Gillies pulled his hamstring as he chased Morrison and had to come off. William MacKinnon dropped back into defence. Kevin Bartlett got his second to make it 4-0 on the hour when he took a short pass from Craig Morrison before scoring from wide on the right. Craig Morrison completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes later as he gathered Kieran MacPherson’s long ball forward before turning William MacKinnon and sending the ball low into the net. Caberfeidh top scorer Craig Morrison was withdrawn soon after to protect his hamstring problem. There was some consolation for Skye as substitute Taylor Matheson pulled a goal back with a minute remaining. Danny Morrison’s shot was knocked down by Blair Morrison and Matheson netted on his back-hand past a diving keeper. Speaking afterwards, a delighted Caberfeidh boss Jodie Gorski said: “There was nothing in it for the first 43 minutes and it took a very good save from our keeper (Iain McCall) to keep the tie level. However Kevin Bartlett and Craig Morrison showed again just what they can do and when Craig scored early in the second half, that gave Skye too much to do.” The cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final between Caberfeidh and Kingussie takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 11 June 2022.
Mowi Premiership Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Kinlochshiel 2 Keith MacRae’s late penalty meant Kinlochshiel recorded a fourth successive victory, beating Glasgow Mid Argyll 2-1 at Peterson Park. Kinlochshiel’s John MacRae scored for the fifth time over the last six matches to give ‘Shiel a 37 minute lead. However when referee David Mitchell awarded GMA a penalty a minute after the restart, Calum McLay stepped up to level the match. And that’s the way it stayed until a couple of minutes from time when referee Mitchell again pointed to the spot but this time for Kinlochshiel. The decision was hotly disputed by GMA but Keith MacRae held his nerve to score.
Kyles Athletic 0 Kingussie 2 League leaders Kingussie recorded an eighth straight league success when they beat Kyles Athletic 2-0 at Tighnabruaich. Both sides were already weakened as Kyles missed the suspended Andrew King, full back Callum Millar and injured wing back Martin MacFadyen so Robert Baxter had to reassemble his defence. However, Robbie MacLeod returned whilst talisman Roddy MacDonald provided his usual influence. John Gibson was already without the likes of Fraser Munro, James Falconer and Dylan Borthwick so all stops were pulled to ensure keeper Rory MacGregor and defender Calum Grant were available for selection and whilst it has been some time since club stalwarts Davie Anderson and Dallas Young have made on-field contributions, they certainly played their part in the 2-0 victory over Robert Baxter’s side. Davie Anderson drove north to Inverness Airport on Saturday morning to await a flight from Bristol which was the final leg of keeper Rory MacGregor’s journey home from a certain football excursion to Seville. MacGregor managed no more than an hour’s sleep overnight but was still able to play a key role in his side’s victory. Meantime Calum Grant, who is working in Orkney at present, flew from Kirkwall to Glasgow on Saturday morning where Dallas Young picked him up before dashing, within the speed limit, to Tighnabruaich. Grant arrived 5 minutes before throw up and was introduced as a substitute around half an hour in whilst MacGregor started in goal and showed his worth, looking really sharp and making some excellent saves as Kyles swamped the Kingussie goal during the opening10 minutes. James Hutchison was passed fit to play for the Kings which covered Louis Munro’s unavailability. It was a wet, sticky surface which didn’t suit the Kings but, after surviving the early onslaught, they did take the lead on 38 minutes. Referee Des McNulty awarded the visitors a free-hit on the edge of the box and Savio Genini flicked the ball out to the left where Ruaridh Anderson ran onto it and his half-swing went waist-high by keeper John Whyte at his near post. Whyte got his hand to Anderson’s shot but just couldn’t keep the ball out. Roddy Young added a second on 41 minutes, giving champions a margin for error if they needed it. Savio Genini’s initial shot crashed back off the post to the side of the penalty spot and Young struck a low, back-hand shot into the corner of the net.
Fort William 0 Kilmallie 1 Kilmallie came out on top in their derby against Fort William winning 1-0 in their 3pm throw up at An Aird. The goal that separated the sides came from Calum MacDougall after just 7 minutes but owed much to the lead up play from wing centre Ben MacKinnon who ran away from Jack Fraser has he burst up the left. MacKinnon’s run took him to around the penalty spot and his shot bobbled by full back Mark Grant. Calum MacDougall ran onto the ball at the edge of the D and he flicked it past keeper Paul MacKay. It took an outstanding Paul MacKay save at around the hour mark to keep out a great Daniel Stewart strike. Referee Alex MacVicar played 6 minutes stoppage time and Fort William, who piled on the pressure during the closing stages of the game, came so close to a leveller when Arran MacPhee hit the side-netting following a corner. It was an eventful afternoon for match-winner Calum MacDougall on his second game back – he played an hour as a substitute against Kinlochshiel – following a serious knee injury. MacDougall went down with what turned out to be a dislocated shoulder so faces another spell on the sidelines.
Newtonmore 2 Lovat 2 Marc MacLachlan scored in stoppage time to preserve Lovat’s unbeaten league record as they drew 2-2 with Newtonmore in their 3pm throw up at the Eilan. Newtonmore were missing keeper Owen Fraser, who has a knee injury, Iain Robinson, who has a broken bone in his ankle, as well as Max Campbell, Arron MacBean and Fraser MacKintosh and that’s not counting longer term absentees Darrin Fowler and Drew MacDonald. Lovat manager Jamie Matheson had his own concerns with Lorne MacKay, Callum Cruden, Duncan Davidson and Lewis Tawse all unavailable whilst Fraser Heath and Drew Howie were only able to take places on the bench but both were brought on. Veteran Michael Ritchie returned in the ‘More goals and he produced several outstanding saves throughout the course of the match. Marc MacLachlan gave Lovat a 22 minute lead following a scramble in front of goal after the home defence missed the chance to play the ball out for a corner. Lovat could have been out of sight by the interval but ‘More made changes at the break with Michael Russell going to full centre, swapping roles with Conor Jones who went to buckshee forward. The switch paid off with Russell excelling in midfield and Jones levelled following a free-hit played square on 56 minutes as he sent the ball high into the net from the edge of the D. Duncan MacPherson, who was pushed up into attack in the second half, put ‘More ahead on 74 minutes when he ran onto a high ball which was deflected over Daniel Grieve and MacPherson was quickly onto it and he showed great composure to score. As the match moved into stoppage time, Marc MacLachlan grabbed his second goal of the game, punishing a defensive slip to earn the Balgate side a point. There was a further blow after the game when it was confirmed that ‘More’s Struan Ross had suffered torn ligaments in his knee.
Mowi National Division Oban Celtic 1 Beauly 7 Title hopefuls Beauly gathered another two points, maintaining their three point advantage at the top of the division by defeating Oban Celtic 7-1 in their 3pm throw up at Mossfield. Youngster Finlay MacLennan gave the visitors a 5 minute advantage with Ross Forbes doubling their lead just 3 minutes after. Beauly’s good start continued with Euan MacCormick adding strikes on 17 and 24 minutes to make it 4-0. Scott Dempster pulled a goal back on 27 minutes to make it 4-1 at the break but there was no denying Beauly as Sean Stewart added a fifth a couple of minutes after the hour. Jack MacDonald on 74 minutes and a second from Ross Forbes just 5 minutes from time took Beauly another step closer to Premiership shinty.
Inveraray 2 Aberdour 0 Third placed Inveraray scored a goal late in each half to beat Aberdour 2-0 at the Winterton. Ali MacDonald made it 1-0 on 41 minutes with young Ruaraidh Graham doubling their lead on 83 minutes and Inveraray remain undefeated in the league.
Lochaber 2 Glenurquhart 1 Lochaber stay second in the division after beating Glenurquhart 2-0 in their 2pm throw up at Spean Bridge. It was a second successive win for new boss Ally Ferguson with Duncan MacKinnon giving his side a 5 minute lead. However Angus MacCallum levelled on 12 minutes and just when a draw seemed likely, Ryan Toal popped up to win the match for Lochaber with just 4 minutes remaining.
Strathdearn Cup - Second Round Lovat 4 Strathspey Camanachd 0 Holders Lovat seconds took another step towards a return trip to the Strathdearn Cup Final when they beat Strathspey Camanachd 4-0 at Balgate. Lovat player / manager Raymond Rennie has been key to his side’s chances this season and he broke the deadlock on 26 minutes. Laura Gallacher added a second just 3 minutes before the break with Lewis Bryson on 72 minutes and a second from Raymond Rennie on 84 minutes rounding off the win.
Newtonmore 3 Skye Camanachd 0 An understrength Newtonmore second team progressed in the Strathdearn Cup as they saw off the Skye Camanachd second team 3-0 in their noon throw up at the Eilan Tristan Ross gave ‘More the perfect start in this second round tie with a strike into the bottom corner of the net after the home side broke up-field after just 2 minutes. Veteran Glen MacKintosh is central to so much of Newtonmore’s attacking play and he added a second on 29 minutes before netting again following a quick free-hit on 51 minutes. Skye’s Ali MacLeod saw an effort ruled out by referee Deek Cameron with play brought back for a Skye free-hit as the Islanders claimed advantage should have been played. ‘More did enough to win the tie although their goalie Jason MacDonald made several good saves including two late stops from Skye skipper Ian MacPherson.
Beauly 1 Kinlochshiel 0 The Beauly seconds did just enough to edge out the Kinlochshiel seconds 1-0 at Braeview Park. ‘Shiel were one of the more fancied teams in this tournament and are currently mid-table in Mowi North Division 1. The young Beauly side are out in front in Mowi North Division 2 and the goal that made the difference came from Callum MacIver on 41 minutes.
Caberfeidh 1 Inverness 0 (after extra-time) It took extra-time to separate the Caberfeidh colts and the Inverness colts at Castle Leod. With no scoring during the regulation 90 minutes, referee Martin MacLean took the tie into an extra-time period and veteran Stewart Krzyzanowski scored what proved to be the winner on 101 minutes.
MKM Building Supplies Oban Bullough Cup – Quarter-Finals Lochside Rovers 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 The Glasgow Mid Argyll juniors came from behind to overcome Lochside Rovers 4-2 in their noon throw up at Ganavan. GMA were able to field Craig Anderson, who has only played three senior matches this season before suffering a broken finger, on his return from injury. Lewis Buchanan gave the Oban side a 12 minute advantage and they stayed in front until Ross Brown pulled GMA level on 65 minutes. It remained 1-1 until the final 10 minutes of the tie. Ross Brown got his second on 81 minutes to put the Glasgow side ahead for the first time in the match. Connal MacDiarmid made it 3-1 on 85 minutes with Ross Brown completing his hat-trick a minute from time. A second from Lewis Buchanan in injury time wasn’t enough for Lochside.
Oban Celtic 0 Strachur-Dunoon 3 Strachur-Dunoon beat the Oban Celtic second team 3-0 in their noon throw up at Mossfield. Brandon Wilson on 21 minutes and Ross MacDonald on 42 minutes made it 2-0 at the break with Hayden Thomas completing the scoring 20 minutes from time. Bute 4 Aberdour 1 The Bute reserves are through to the semi-finals after winning 4-1 against the Aberdour reserves in their 2pm throw up at the Meadows. Bute are enjoying a good season and they lead Mowi South Division 2 so it was no shock when John MacCallum gave them a 10 minute lead. Aiden MacGregor gave the Islanders margin for error when he made it 2-0 on 55 minutes. There was a late glut of goals with Joseph Burns halving the deficit on 83 minutes but Iain McDonald on 85 minutes and Craig Speirs just 3 minutes later made it 4-1.
Kilmory 4 Inveraray 3 Kilmory’s derby meeting with the Inveraray second team was brought forward to Thursday 19 May 2022 with a 7pm throw up. The switch helped attract a healthy crowd and Kilmory started well, getting their reward on 15 minutes when Sandy Leiper’s low strike from range went low by the keeper. Alex Cunningham added a second on 23 minutes before Inveraray began to pressure the hosts and Nicholas Crawford pulled a goal back a couple of minutes before the interval. Inveraray continued to press after the restart and Allan MacDonald levelled the tie on 57 minutes. It was now Kilmory’s turn to go back on the offensive and Euan Gilmour put them back in front on 71 minutes. Inveraray went for another leveller but Kilmory picked them off on 78 minutes when Sandy Leiper got his second following a solo run and back-hand finish. With just 3 minutes, Inveraray’s Allan MacDonald notched his second to make it 4-3 but this time Kilmory stayed in front. Kilmory will now face the Bute seconds in the semi-finals.
Mowi North Division 1 Fort William 8 Glenurquhart 0 Hat-tricks from Lachie Shaw and Alan Knox helped the Fort William seconds to a comfortable 8-0 win over the Glenurquhart seconds in their noon throw up at an Aird. Lachie Shaw struck the opener on 7 minutes whilst Alan Knox scored twice in two minutes on 12 and 13 minutes. The Fort colts are benefiting from Lachie Shaw’s inclusion and he completed his hat-trick with goals on 36 and 38 minutes. Rhys Kennedy made it 6-0 on 41 minutes and there was no way back for the Glen. Lewis Clark added a seventh just 4 minutes into the second half and when referee Willie MacDonald awarded Fort William a penalty on 65 minutes, Alan Knox stepped up to complete his hat-trick.

Mowi North Division 2 Aberdeen University 0 Kilmallie 3 When the Lochaber seconds were unable to raise a team for their match against Aberdeen University at the Woodside Sports Complex, they were docked a point with the Students awarded both points. Then, when travel difficulties prevented the Kilmallie seconds travelling to Lewis, the meeting between Aberdeen University and the Kilmallie colts was quickly rearranged. With a shortage of shinty referee’s, and with the agreement of both teams, Kilmallie full forward Scott Campbell took charge of the match as he is currently sidelined with a hand injury. This was only Aberdeen University’s second home match a season in which they have moved away from their former Balgownie pitch. The hosts came closest to an opener when Joe Folan’s long ball out of defence was brought down by Lachie Dean Morrice and his turn and shot went just by Kilmallie keeper Alexander McNiven’s right post. A clearance out of the Kilmallie defence was taken down by Aberdeen veteran Jamie Beaton but his effort was deflected away for a corner before a speculative effort from Josh Wood was saved low by his left post by goalie McNiven. Kilmallie responded and Seamus MacFarlane couldn’t force the ball on target before Liam Cameron won possession and cut inside from the left but his strike looped high and wide. At the other end, Lachie Dean Morrice’s turn and shot from Jamie Buchan’s hit-in on the right was saved by Alexander McNiven. Kilmallie took the lead on 51 minutes when a good ball from Liam Cameron was finished well by Seamus MacFarlane. Kilmallie’s Duncan MacDougall bustled into the D soon after but home goalie Scott Moffat cleared the ball for a corner. Aberdeen’s Jamie Buchan spurned a chance before Willie Hunter’s deflected strike broke to Lachie Dean Morrice on the right but Jamie Buchan was just unable to find the net from the back post. Kain Cameron saw a shot from distance saved by keeper Moffat before substitute Dugald MacPhee made it 2-0 on 74 minutes, turning home a ball from the left. Just 5 minutes after, Bryan MacKay’s strike from range was parried by Scott Moffat but the home defence failed to clear the danger and Sam MacRae’s shot went in off the keeper’s club to make it 3-0. Kilmallie took their chances and this was the Students first league defeat of the season but they remain behind leaders Beauly only on goal difference whilst the two points lift the Kilmallie colts to third in the division.

Cruachanside 1 Bute 6 Scott Harvey scored four times as Bute were 6-1 winners against Cruachanside at the Taynuilt Sports Field. Kyle MacFarlane scored for Cruachanside meaning the 16 year old has not netted in the last seven successive matches including in the Celtic Society Cup against Kyles Athletic. However Craig Fisher’s double also counted for the Islanders. Cruachanside’s George Reid was sent off by referee Calum Girvan.

Mowi National Division Badenoch 12 Aberdour 0 League leaders Badenoch beat Aberdour 12-0 in their 1pm throw up at the Dell. Badenoch were dealt a blow ahead of the game when it was confirmed that play-maker Kirsty Deans had suffered an ankle fracture when playing for the Kingussie second team in their recent Mowi North Division 1 win against their Fort William counterparts. Deans was on the end of a heavy challenge soon after coming on as a substitute. She showed bravery in continuing to play whilst also scoring the Kings’ fifth goal in their 6-1 victory. However, a hospital check confirmed a fractured ankle which will keep Deans sidelined for at least six weeks. Zoe Reid scored five times with Rhona McIntyre grabbing a hat-trick. Eilidh Ross and Jeanette McGregor both bagged doubles.

Youth Shinty Lochaber Lift MacBean Lochaber lifted the MacBean Cup for S1/2 secondary school pupils at An Aird, Fort William on Monday 16 May 2022. A total twelve schools from across Scotland entered this popular competition. The schools were split into two groups of six with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Kingussie went through their five league games unbeaten with Inverness Royal Academy in second place after edging out Charleston on goal difference. Four teams came close to progressing in the second group but it was Lochaber and Portree who qualified, both undefeated, drawing their match against eachother on. The draw for the semi-finals saw Portree play Inverness Royal Academy in the first semi-final with the Islanders deserved 1-0 winners. 2019 winners Kingussie lined-up against Lochaber in the second semi-final and despite Kingussie’s bright start, Lochaber were convincing winners. A very entertaining final between Lochaber and Portree saw Portree goalie Jamie Buchan make a couple of smart early saves to deny Lochaber. It was an even final overall but, with just a couple of minutes left, Lochaber’s James Clark, who was excellent at full centre, found enough space to send a powerful, low drive past the keeper to secure victory. |
