The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 20 August 2022 | |
21 August 2022 It was one of shinty’s biggest days of the season as Kingussie lifted the Artemis Macaulay Cup after an exciting final at Mossfield.
Artemis Macaulay Cup Final Oban Camanachd 2 Kingussie 3 Kingussie lifted the Artemis Macaulay Cup for the third successive season with a 3-2 victory over Oban Camanachd in a hugely entertaining final at Mossfield, Oban on Sunday 21 August 2022. The hard work from Iain Hay and his team meant the pitch was in excellent condition as the sides were led out by the Oban High School Pipe Band. Scott McKillop returned for Oban Camanachd for this 2.10pm throw up and he started in defence with Blair McFarlane pushed into midfield. Louie MacFarlane also played at the back where he was outstanding. James Falconer joined a Kingussie injury which includes Fraser Munro and Calum Grant but Savio Genini recovered from a knock picked up in the 4-1 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-final win over the same opponents just a week early. James Hutchison started in attack. Keeper Rory MacGregor suffered an eye injury in the warm-up but was able to play. Kingussie almost made a calamitous start when Scott MacMillian’s free-hit, chipped into the goal area, was deflected and with Rory MacGregor shepherding the ball wide, it came off his left post and rolled across the goal-line before the keeper scrambled it clear. Oban Camanachd already looked an infinitely improved outfit than the previous week and they took the lead on 7 minutes. Daniel Madej’s shot deflected into Daniel MacVicar’s path and he flicked the ball into the air before lifting it by the keeper to make it 1-0. It was a superb finish from a player who is enjoying his best-ever season. Kingussie drew level on 12 minutes. Referee Des McNulty awarded a free-hit when Roddy Young was brought down as he wriggled his way by Scott McKillop towards the D on the left. Savio Genini rolled the set-piece to James Hutchison who drove home on his backhand from a tight angle on the left. Oban Camanachd regained the lead on 19 minutes when Malcolm Clark won possession and some lovely one-touch shinty saw the possession switch from Daniel Madej to Connor Howe and although Daniel MacVicar’s low shot was blocked, Rory MacGregor couldn’t get the ball away and Daniel Madej was in in a flash to force the rebound home. The final was competitive and indeed threatened to boil over at times and the Oban side enjoyed more than their fair share of pressure but Kingussie’s Roddy Young went close after Cameron Sutherland had come off his line to thwart Savio Genini whilst Daniel Madej and Malcolm Clark had shots at goal at the other end. Kingussie made a strong end to the first half and Savio Genini had the ball in the net but was penalised for a “kick” just before he knocked the ball over the line as an action-packed first half moved into the closing stages. Savio Genini then played in Roddy Young who shot across goal but wide of the far post from a tight angle on the right before Daniel Cameron was booked for halting Roddy Young’s marauding run down the right. Ryan Borthwick looked to be troubled by a hamstring problem as 4 minutes of first half stoppage time drew to a close and Louis Munro took over in his place. Oban Camanachd made a good start to the second half but couldn’t add the third goal they wanted and they were made to pay on 56 minutes when Louis Munro found Roddy Young in too much space on the right. Young ran in-field before firing low across the keeper to claim his 30th goal of the season. Oban Camanachd responded positively and Scott MacMillan forced a good Rory MacGregor save. Ruaridh Anderson was having a quiet game by his standards but he put the Kings in front on 64 minutes. Roddy Young’s corner from the right came across goal and as Daniel Sloss went to clear, Anderson hammered the ball high into the net on his left side to make it 3-2. Kingussie seemed to go up a gear during the final quarter of this compelling contest and Cammy Sutherland saved well with his foot after Roddy Young again cut in from the right. Oban Camanachd need a goal and they pushed Daniel Cameron up front for the final 15 minutes. Craig Easton took over in defence with Connor Howe withdrawn. Cammy Sutherland kept Oban Camanachd in it with a brilliant double save, first diving to his left to parry Louis Munro’s shot before managing to sweep the ball away ahead of the onrushing Roddy Young. Sutherland saved again, this time from Dylan Borthwick, and his contribution was rewarded with the Artemis man of the match accolade. Oban Camanachd had a late set-piece opportunity but couldn’t make it count whilst Savio Genini pushed the ball just the wrong side of the post with what was the final chance of the game. This was a much improved performance from Oban Camanachd and it would have been enough to win on many a day but Kingussie were formidable opponents as they edge closer to a Grand Slam of trophies. The Artemis Macaulay Cup was presented to a delighted Kingussie captain Savio Genini by Graeme Mitchell from sponsors Artemis.
Mowi Premiership Kilmallie 2 Fort William 3 Fort William saw off a Kilmallie fightback to win an all-action derby clash at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie fielded Michael Rodger at full centre whilst Fort William buckshee back Calum Shepherd had to get a taxi from Glasgow to play as the train strike left buses fully booked. Despite the heavy rain in the lead up to the match, the pitch was in very good condition. Victor Smith gave the Fort a 5 minute lead, turning home a rebound after Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye had saved. A wonderful Ali MacRae strike from distance flew high into the net on 28 minutes to make it 2-0 at the interval. Victor Smith got his second and Fort William’s third on 52 minutes with a well-worked goal. After winning possession in midfield, a cross-field ball from back to front found Lewis Morrison on the wing. Morrison played the ball in to Victor Smith who slotted it by the keeper to bag his third goal in two matches. Fort William then seemed to run out of steam and the impressive Calum MacDougall brought Kilmallie back into the game on 56 minutes. MacDougall got the ball in a wide possession and proved difficult to dispossess as he dribbled goalwards before beating the keeper. Kilmallie’s Ben MacKinnon had a fine game and he reduced the deficit to a single goal on 67 minutes. MacKinnon took on his marker before cutting inside and chipping the ball over keeper Paul MacKay into the top corner of the net. Craig MacDonald’s introduction at wing centre, with Lewis Clark dropping back to the other wing, helped settle Fort William and although both teams had late chances, the Fort took the points. Kilmallie’s Ben MacKinnon was sent off for a challenge a couple of minutes from time but he can consider himself unfortunate given some of the earlier flashpoints in the game.
Lovat 0 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore scored twice in each half to beat an understrength Lovat side 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Lovat’s Drew Howie was free of suspension and they had seven absentees, suggesting they are prioritising the forthcoming Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final whilst ‘More’s Fraser MacKintosh recovered from a hand injury to play. ‘More broke the deadlock on 28 minutes. Iain Robinson’s ball from the right went across goal and Fraser MacKintosh sent it low back into the danger area where Max Campbell turned before sending a looping shot on his left side just under the crossbar to make it 1-0. The visitors added a second goal a couple of minutes into first half stoppage time. Iain Robinson won possession on the right and his shot was saved by Lovat keeper Ronan MacMillan. The rebound went wide to the left where Conor Jones ran out and crashed a superb shot high into the net. After being involved in the first two goals, Iain Robinson turned scorer, adding two more goals to Newtonmore’s tally on 57 minutes and 78 minutes. First, Robinson ran onto a great Conor Jones ball down the middle before expertly lobbing the keeper to make it 3-0. Robinson rounded off the scoring when he disposed Lovat’s Ian Nicolson before cutting in from the right and sending a fine backhand drive over the goalie from 25 yards range. Newtonmore gave valuable game time to youngster Euan Dingwall.

Ross Gordon turned home Taylor Matheson’s low ball from the right to give Skye a 8 minute lead. The two Skye forwards then swapped roles as Taylor Matheson doubled Skye’s lead on 27 minutes, turning home a rebound after Ross Gordon’s shot was saved by Glen keeper Iain MacLeod. Ross Gordon got his second a couple of minutes later when he had time to steady himself before turning home Will Cowie’s ball from the right. Jordan Murchison, who was on the wrong end of a crude challenge as he ran through on goal moments earlier, completed the scoring on 81 minutes, sending the ball high into the net from a tight angle on the right after Glen keeper Iain MacLeod had got his legs to Ross MacKinnon’s high ball into the D.
