The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 18 May 2018 | |
19 May 2019 Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic will meet once again in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final and Glenurquhart reached the cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final following the shinty action on Saturday 18 May 2019.
Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup – Semi-Finals Oban Camanachd 5 Inveraray 0 Holders Oban Camanachd are through to the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final after overcoming Inveraray 5-0 in their 3pm throw up at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd had Garry Lord back in defence but Scott MacKillop looks to be a long-term absentee. The match also came too soon for Chrissie MacMillan but he did train during the week for the first time since January as he works his way back from injury. Keith MacMillan was also missing. Inveraray’s Connor Howe was suspended so unable to play against his former club. Ally Munro was also missing. Garry MacPherson was at half back, picking up the dangerous Daniel Cameron. Both teams opened at a high tempo and it took a great Cameron Sutherland save on 12 minutes to keep out Lewis MacNicol’s point-blank effort. Andrew MacCuish gave the hosts a 24 minute lead. MacCuish’s shot on the turn from around the penalty spot went high into the net. The first goal was crucial and the Oban Camanachd centre line of Aidan MacIntyre, Lorne Dickie and Scott MacMillan started to take a grip of the game with Daniel Madej and Malcolm Clark playing very well behind them, limiting Inveraray to few chances. Daniel Cameron made it 2-0 on 41 minutes with another turn and shot from similar range to the opener and the ball flew high over the keeper. Daniel MacCuish added a third on 64 minutes with a shot that went under keeper Scott MacLachlan’s feet. Daniel Cameron’s second on 66 minutes was a scrappy affair with Cameron capitalising on some panic in the Inveraray defence and he slotted the ball to the keeper’s right to make it 4-0. Oban Camanachd had a strong bench and Craig MacDougall and Willie Neilson came on in attack, taking over from Aidan MacIntyre and Daniel MacVicar with Daniel MacCuish dropping back to cover MacIntyre’s wing centre role. Oban Camanachd continued to create chances with Andrew MacCuish, marked by Allan MacDonald, invariably involved in all their good link-up play. Gary McKerracher came off the home bench on 78 minutes but, rather than disrupt the defence, he joined the attack, replacing Andrew MacCuish. And the switch paid off on 85 minutes as McKerracher was first to read the situation outside the D and his turn and shot made it 5-0.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kyles Athletic 3 Kyles Athletic ensured there will be a repeat of last year’s final but they had to fight all the way to beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-2 in their semi-final at Yoker. Brian Slattery returned for GMA but full back Ryan Harrison was missing. Callum Miller returned for Kyles whilst Paul MacArthur served the second match of his two-game ban. Liam Arnott played his first senior game for Kyles. Robbie MacLeod gave Kyles the lead on 22 minutes. MacLeod gathered the ball fully 30 yards out and, as he lofted the ball goalwards, the dropping ball deceived GMA keeper Robert Dunnings and went over the line. GMA didn’t let their heads drop though and Calum McLay was foiled by a good John Whyte save. At the other end, Robert Dunnings had to be alert on a couple of occasions, particularly getting his body in the way of a point-blank Colin MacDonald effort, to restrict the Tighnabruaich side to a single goal lead at the break. GMA levelled 5 minutes into the second half when referee Alex MacVicar penalised John Whyte for a “kick”. Craig Anderson stepped up to score from the spot for the second successive Saturday. And it got even better for the Glasgow side on 55 minutes when Duncan “Ach” MacRae scored from an acute angle with the ball going in off the far post. Indeed MacRae went close to making it 3-1 but his effort went over. Kyles Athletic knew they were in a game and Roddy Macdonald was pushed forward from defence to midfield. Kyles equalised on 74 minutes when Conor Kennedy got onto a cross-ball and he shot low into the net to notch his first senior goal for Kyles. The visitors were awarded a penalty just 3 minutes later when keeper Dunnings was penalised for a “kick”. Robbie MacLeod didn’t catch the spot-hit as he would have liked and Dunnings saved with his feet with the ball played out for a corner. When the ball was played into the danger area, Roddy Macdonald’s effort was saved by the keeper but Robbie MacLeod was on hand to atone for his penalty miss as he turned home the rebound to make it 3-2 and send Kyles through to the final which takes place at Taynuilt on Saturday 29 June 2019.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup – Semi-Final Strathglass 0 Glenurquhart 2 Glenurquhart reached the cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final as two early goals gave them a 2-0 victory over Strathglass at Cannich. A healthy crowd gathered for this match and, although there was heavy rain in the lead-up to the game, it stopped before throw up. The Strath welcomed back Hamish Myers, Penri Jones, Seth Jones, Michael Stokes and Hamish Myers but Jono Price was a late call-off. Glen defender Lachie Smith served a one match ban for a points accumulation with his side not having played since the end of April. The injured Michael Brady was also missing. Strathglass, who usually prove difficult opponents for the Glen, started well and they had the early territorial advantage without really threatening the goal. Glenurquhart edged in front on 15 minutes. Ewan Brady played the ball from the right to Oliver Black on the left and he fed Neale Reid who pulled the ball to his right before scoring with a fierce shot on the angle. Ewan Brady made it 2-0 on 25 minutes with a low shot which took a deflection off Donald Fraser, wrong-footing keeper Ally MacAdams. Ally MacAdams made a quick save with his stick to deny Conor Golabek in the second half. This came after a good move and the keeper reacted quickly to throw out his stick and divert Golabek’s low effort away for a corner. Strathglass lost Scott Douglas with a leg injury following an Ally MacKintosh challenge. Strathglass never gave up and they put most effort into the game but Glenurquhart were always the more creative. John Barr was best for the Glen and he had a good battle with Michael Stokes. Cameron MacKintosh also had a good game until he suffered a knock. Donald Fraser got top marks for Strathglass whilst Alastair MacLean also played well in midfield. The second semi-final between Newtonmore and Kingussie at the Eilan takes place this coming Saturday.
Mowi Premiership Newtonmore 5 Kinlochshiel 0 Newtonmore continued their winning streak by beating Kinlochshiel 5-0 at the Eilan. Glen MacKintosh got the opener on 6 minutes and Evan Menzies made it 2-0 on 16 minutes. Michael Russell on 30 minutes and another from Evan Menzies on 36 minutes gave ‘More a lead they weren’t going to lose. Glen MacKintosh got his second on 84 minutes to round off the 5-0 win. ‘More are now third; just two points off the top of the table with a game in hand.
Lochaber 5 Caberfeidh 4 Lochaber edged out Caberfeidh 5-4 following a thrilling second half performance at Spean Bridge. Lochaber boss Michael Delaney made three changes to the side which lost heavily at Kinlochshiel a week earlier. Alastair MacDonald and Max Campbell dropped onto the bench whilst Duncan MacKinnon was unavailable. Martin Johnstone returned and there were also starting spots for Chris MacRae and Danny Delaney. Caberfeidh manager Jodi Gorski took a place on the bench alongside youngsters Ben MacDonald and Graham MacGregor. Ryan MacKay, who scored twice in the win over Skye a fortnight earlier, was unavailable. It was a damp day and, as the midges took hold, there were few signs during an even first 45 minutes of the thrilling spectacle that would eventually unfold. Lochaber’s Danny Delaney had the first chance of the match on 7 minutes but he shot wide from 15 yards range. Lochaber had to reshuffle on 14 minutes as defender Chris MacRae limped off with a hamstring pull. Then, on 23 minutes, Ben Delaney weaved past a couple of players but his 20 yard shot was well-saved and then cleared by Caberfeidh keeper Ewan Pilcher. Caberfeidh’s Craig Morrison twice came close to opening the scoring. On 29 minutes, he found space on the left but he sent a 20 yard effort high over the bar. Then, his shot from the D came off the post and out for a goal-hit. With frustration building, Kevin Bartlett failed to hit the target on two occasions. So when Lochaber took the lead on 31 minutes, the goal came against the run of play. Ben Delaney went on a run into the box and, when he was pushed over by Jamie MacKintosh, referee John Angus Gillies pointed to the spot. Young Findlay MacDonald showed maturity beyond his years as he stepped up and fired the ball into the top right corner of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break. Whilst the first half was unmemorable, the second 45 minutes was a treat for the spectators. The visitors levelled when Ally MacLennan found Jamie MacLeod free on the right and he drilled a 25 yard shot into the top corner to make it 1-1. However Stuart Callison restored Lochaber’s lead when he finished off a well-worked move between the Delaney brothers and when Ben Delaney slipped the ball to Callison, he stroked it past the keeper. Cabers were now dominant and, when they won a free-hit for an infringement on the halfway line, Ally MacLennan floated a great ball deep into the Lochaber defence, Kevin Bartlett took it down and rounded his marker and with the keeper stranded and the goal gapping, Bartlett sent the ball the wrong side of the post. Caberfeidh levelled for a second time on 62 minutes. Ally MacLennan won the ball in midfield and he found Craig Morrison on the left and Morrison turned his marker before hitting a brilliant shot to the keeper’s top left to make it 2-2. Cabers took the lead for the first time in the match on 70 minutes. Kevin Bartlett played in Craig Morrison 20 yards out and he turned and shot goalwards, this time beating the goalie high to his right. The Castle Leod side won possession straight from the restart and some good movement from Ally MacLennan saw him pick out Kevin Bartlett who created space on the left before firing past the keeper to make it 4-2. When Caberfeidh won possession on 76 minutes, Craig Morrison hit a low shot which keeper Callum MacDonald saved with his feet. The keeper fell to the ground but managed to clear the ball for a corner. There were shouts for a penalty but the referee deemed it was safe for MacDonald to clear without endangering himself. The next 10 minute spell of the game changed everything. Lochaber scored the goal of the match on 75 minutes. Ben Delaney won the ball on the left of midfield and he was impeded as he weaved his way past a couple of challenges but the referee played advantage and when Delany reached the D, he passed to Danny Delaney who slotted home, beating the keeper at his right post. Lochaber drew level on 83 minutes. Stuart Callison won possession on the left and he delivered an inch-perfect pass to Danny Delaney on the edge of the D and he sent the ball low into the net to make it 4-4. Lochaber now had the momentum and they got the winner with 5 minutes remaining. Shaun Nicolson found Ben Delaney at the penalty spot and he turned his marker before beating the keeper, low to his left, to make it 5-4. Caberfeidh will rue the chances they missed earlier in the game however Lochaber kept fighting to the end of a terrific second half which deserved a bigger crowd. The win takes Lochaber three points clear of the relegation zone and they collected a couple of bookings as Martin Johnstone was penalised for a reckless swing on Kevin Bartlett and Danny Delaney was punished for hitting the ball away 3 minutes into stoppage time. Lochaber’s Ben Delaney turned in a man-of-the-match performance with tireless work in midfield whilst young Findlay MacDonald was impressive up front. Donald MacRae and Ryan Johnstone were both solid in defence. Ally MacLennan in midfield was best for Cabers.
Mowi National Division Oban Celtic 1 Beauly 1 There was last-minute agony for Oban Celtic as Beauly snatched a goal at the death to earn a 1-1 draw in their 11.30am throw up at Mossfield. Oban Celtic’s Rory Bruce was still sidelined with a shoulder injury but manager Dougie MacIntyre is starting to be able to field most of his first picks. Peter Currie was given a marking job on Jack MacDonald. Beauly travelled with a youthful squad and Sean Stewart, Daniel Lamont, Angus Renwick and Greg Tillman were amongst their absentees. The pitch was in great condition for this early throw up and the hosts had the ball in the net after just 3 minutes. Neil Carmichael sent the ball forward to Ally McKerracher who was pushed on the back as he turned his man. McKerracher found Ross MacMillan who scored but referee Graham Cameron blew just as the ball hit the net with play brought back for the foul. Ally McKerracher and Ross MacMillan passed up chances whilst, at the other end, home keeper iain MacFarlane had to make a good save with his feet to stop Beauly going ahead. Oban Celtic opened the scoring following a clever free-hit on 20 minutes. Ally McKerracher took the ball down and shielded it before scooping it to Ross MacMillan who scored. Oban Celtic signed Lennon Campbell from Lochside Rovers during the week and he came on at the start of the second half with Andy MacDonald going to half back. Oban Celtic continued to create chances but, at times, they were guilty of over-playing whilst the final ball wasn’t always right. Lennon Campbell came close to a debut goal but he sent a shot wide following Neil Carmichael’s free-hit. With 10 minutes remaining, George MacMillan made a good run before passing to Ross MacMillan who just couldn’t get the ball to an unmarked Lennon Campbell and the chance was gone. After passing up so many chances, and indeed being thwarted by some great MacKay Murray goalkeeping, Oban Celtic were caught with a sucker-punch at the death. A long ball forward was played on to Finlay MacLennan and the youngster’s waist-high shot on the turn from 25 yards out beat the keeper to his left to make it 1-1. Oban Celtic still created another opportunity as they broke forward from the restart but Daniel MacMillan’s effort went agonisingly wide. George MacMillan turned in a man of the match performance on the left of the Oban Celtic midfield whilst Daniel MacMillan also did well.
Fort William 5 Bute 0 Table-toppers Fort William are just one match from reaching the halfway point in their league fixtures and they recorded a sixth straight win by beating Bute 5-0 in their noon throw up at An Aird. Fort William settled into the match with goals from Lewis Morrison on 4 minutes and Lachie Shaw on 11 minutes. Two more goals before the break from Lewis Clark on 28 minutes and Padraig McNeil on 34 minutes had the Fort comfortably in control. A second from Padraig McNeil on 78 minutes was the only goal of the second half.
Sutherland Cup – Second Round Beauly W/O v Ballachulish The Beauly second team were given a walk-over when the Ballachulish second team, who were without the suspended John MacDonald and Andrew MacDonald, were unable to raise a team for their tie at Braeview Park. Beauly now have a reserve team derby against Lovat in the Sutherland Cup quarter-finals.
Bullough Cup – First Round Lochside Rovers 2 Kilmory 1 Lochside Rovers survived a late scare to beat Kilmory 2-1 at Ganavan. The Ganavan pitch held a lot of surface water as the game got under way. Lochside started well and Lewis Buchanan smashed a goal-bound shot from 25 yards which was spectacularly saved by Steven Gilmour in the Kilmory goal. Lochside took the lead right on half-time. Some good work again from Lewis Buchanan saw him force another fine Gilmour stop only this time; Ross Campbell pounced on the rebound and he gave the keeper no chance with a fine strike. The Oban side were awarded a penalty by referee Graham Fisher on 60 minutes but Iain MacMillan struck the spot-hit straight at keeper Gilmour. It looked as if Lochside were going to see the game out but a lapse in concentration on 78 minutes allowed Alister MacArthur in to slot the ball past Dougie MacDonald in the home goal. Lochside keep working away and they got a deserved winner on 81 minutes. Iain MacMillan, who was at the heart of all Lochside’s good forward play, popped up and latched onto a free-hit just at the penalty spot, and he tucked the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Lochside now host the English Shinty Association in next month’s quarter-finals.
Inveraray 10 Oban Celtic 0 The Inveraray seconds from South 1 had too much for South 2 side Oban Celtic seconds, winning 10-0 at the Winterton. Inveraray manager Andrew McMurdo was absent due to work commitments so right hand men Ali Watt and Ross Anderson stepped in. Kieran Kirkhope was also working. The Oban side were without the spine of their team with experienced trio Iain MacKechnie, Scott Burnett and Lorne Robertson all unavailable. Keegan Mcphee also missed out after having 12 stitches inserted in a leg injury. It was a damp day in Inveraray and both sides, particularly Oban Celtic, had very young teams on show with the majority players aged under 18. Inveraray started really well and a Rhys Williams shot from the edge of the penalty area made it 1-0 after 10 minutes. Campbell Watt made it 2-0 on 15 minutes with Rhys Williams getting his second just 5 minutes later. Coll MacKay on 26 minutes and Craig Taylor on 33 minutes made it 5-0 before Campbell Watt got his second on 42 minutes to make it 6-0 at half-time. A combination of excellent goalkeeping from Rebecca Mcphee and some wasteful shooting stopped Inveraray adding to their tally. Inveraray introduced 14 year old Kory Kirkhope and 17 year old Kane Kirkhope at half-time, joining older brother Kenny Kirkhope on the field, and they made encouraging contributions. Craig Taylor got his second on 50 minutes and Campbell Watt completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes to make it 8-0. Campbell Watt scored his fourth goal of the game on the hour mark. The young Oban Celtic side had a spell of pressure in the second half but couldn’t make it count. Coll MacKay, back on after a spell on the sidelines, completed the scoring with his second goal on 82 minutes. The Inveraray youngsters played well whilst it will come good for the young Oban players if they all stick at it in the years to come. Referee Ronnie Campbell used all his experience and handled the game very well. The Inveraray seconds travel to play the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team in the quarter-finals.
