The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 18 June 2022 | |
19 June 2022 It was a busy day in the Mowi Premiership with wins for Kingussie, Kyles Athletic, Lovat and Oban Camanachd following the shinty action on Saturday 18 June 2022.
Mowi Premiership Lovat 4 Kilmallie 3 The meeting between Lovat and Kilmallie was reversed to the Canal Parks and brought forward to Wednesday 15 June 2022 at Lovat’s request. Kilmallie were still without the suspended Sandy Corrigan who served the second game of a three match suspension and they fell behind after just 3 minutes when Greg Matheson scored. With just 5 first half minutes remaining, Fraser Heath doubled Lovat’s lead. Just as they had done in the first half, Lovat scored three minutes after the restart with Fraser Heath getting his second goal of the evening to make it 3-0. Greg Matheson got his second a couple of minutes past the hour and there only looked to be one winner. However Kilmallie’s Daniel Stewart scored for the second successive Saturday with just 15 minutes remaining to make it 4-1and the fight-back was on. And it was Daniel Stewart again on 80 minutes and when, with just 5 minutes remaining, Stuart Callison made it 4-3, it made for an uncomfortable final few minutes for Lovat but they stayed in front to take the points.
Caberfeidh 2 Kingussie 3 Caberfeidh led twice against league leaders Kingussie before eventually going down 3-2 at Castle Leod. This was the second meeting between the sides on successive Saturdays following Kingussie’s 5-2 cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final win the previous weekend. Just as they did the previous week, Caberfeidh took the lead with Craig Morrison scoring after 3 minutes. Kingussie manager John Gibson was missing Lee Bain, James Falconer, Fraser Munro and Cameron Bremner from the victorious cup final team whilst several other players were suffering the effects of flu, so much so that they travelled separately to the game to lessen the chance of the illness spreading. Lee Riddoch played in defence where he had his best game in a Kingussie shirt. Kingussie started with the wind in their favour but, just as they had done the previous week, Caberfeidh struck first when top scorer Craig Morrison found space on the right to take Kevin Bartlett’s pass and he smashed the ball home from around 15 yards after just 3 minutes. However Caberfeidh only stayed in front for 10 minutes as Roddy Young began to impose his influence on the game. Young picked the ball up in the centre forward position, taking on his marker and running towards goal. He then cut back and hit a low backhand shot past keeper Iain McCall and into the bottom corner of the net. The hosts regained the lead on the half-hour when Kevin Bartlett scored a fine individual goal but Kingussie drew level for a second time on 58 minutes. Roddy Young gathered possession out on the wing before taking the ball past a couple of defenders and striking a half-swing past the keeper, low into the corner of the goal to make it 2-2. The goal that made the difference arrived just a couple of minutes later, on the hour. Roddy Young was proving to be a real thorn in the Caberfeidh defence and when the ball dropped on the edge of the box, he took a half-swing which was saved by keeper Iain McCall but the ball dropped invitingly for Young who stroked it into an empty net to make it 3-2. Kingussie had the chance to add a fourth from the penalty spot. Kieran MacPherson hit a great shot and home keeper Iain McCall looked to have saved well with his foot by the post. However referee Martin MacLean ruled a “kick” but Savio Genini’s penalty went over the bar. Kieran MacPherson went close again with another effort which the keeper turned onto the post. This was a tenth successive league win for the Kings who maintain their 100% record in shinty’s top flight. They now lead second placed Newtonmore by six points although they have played a game more. Kinlochshiel are just a point behind ‘More and whilst fourth placed Lovat trail Kingussie by nine points, they do have four games in hand meaning they are very much in the title race.
Oban Camanachd 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Oban Camanachd beat Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Finalists Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-0 at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd were missing Daniel Sloss, Blair MacFarlane, Ross Campbell and David Cameron but Daniel Cameron and Scott MacMillan returned to the side. The hosts opened with the wind in their favour and they took the lead after just 10 minutes. Scott Robertson sent the ball down the wing to Louie MacFarlane, relieved of his defensive duties to start at full forward with Daniel Madej, and he ran out to gather possession. Daniel MacVicar met MacFarlane’s cross, just to the left of centre, and he had time for a full swing which sent the ball chest high past a helpless keeper. Oban Camanachd doubled their lead on 26 minutes. Daniel Cameron’s ball into the goal area invited Daniel Madej and Louie MacFarlane to battle for possession with their markers. When the ball broke, Connor Howe called for it and Daniel Madej left it for his strike partner to run onto and score. Oban Camanachd were worthy of their lead and GMA defended well for the remainder of the half with Ryan Harrison and John Don MacKenzie very effective. The next goal was always going to be important and Louie MacFarlane clinched victory on 68 minutes. The excellent Daniel MacVicar came deep to gather the ball wide on the right and he spun his marker before running at the GMA defence, to the edge of the box where he squared the ball to Louie MacFarlane who fired low into the net. Innes Jackson came on for the final 15 minutes and almost scored with a rasping shot which went just over the bar. 18 year old Gregor MacDonald came on to play his second game for the seniors whilst Oban Camanachd gave one of their most promising youngsters, 14 year old Matthew Sloss, his first team debut during the closing stages of the game. GMA manager Alan MacRae has a couple of fresh worries ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final against Kyles Athletic at Peterson Park as defender Ryan Harrison and forward Ally McKerracher both went off with hamstring injuries. Harrison’s tightening of the hamstring may just have been caught in time but McKerracher looked in some discomfort when he left the field near the end of the game and he must be a major doubt for south shinty’s showpiece game.
Kyles Athletic 4 Fort William 2 Roddy MacDonald’s second half double gave Kyles Athletic a 4-2 win against Fort William at Tighnabruaich. Kyles broke the deadlock through Robbie MacLeod on 17 minutes but Victor Smith found the net on 31 minutes to make it 1-1. It was Robbie MacLeod again for Kyles on 33 minutes before Bryan Simpson made it 2-2 on 42 minutes. Roddy MacDonald, as he has often done, pulled Kyles through with goals on 62 and 78 minutes.
Newtonmore P Kinlochshiel P Newtonmore’s 3pm throw up against Kinlochshiel at the Eilan was a covid related postponement.
Mowi National Division Skye Camanachd 3 Lochaber 0 Skye Camanachd go third in the Mowi National Division after beating Lochaber 3-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye defender John Gillies made an earlier than expect return from injury but William MacKinnon and Ross MacKinnon joined Martin Pringle and Somhairle MacDonald on the absentee list. Lochaber were missing Connor Sweeney, Martin Johnstone and Ryan Johnstone whilst Ronnie Fulford has left to join the RAF. Lochaber keeper Ally MacDonald spread himself to thwart Jordan Murchison after 8 minutes whilst Murchison went close again after the Lochaber keeper chested down Taylor Matheson’s strike with Murchison’s effort going over the bar. Skye had to re-jig their defence midway through the first half when Neil MacVicar had to go off with a face injury. John Gillies went from buckshee back to full back and Jamie Gillies came off the bench. Ally MacDonald stretched to save well after Taylor Matheson and James Pringle combined whilst at the other end, Iain Fyfe shot wide of the post after getting by Connor Gilpin. Skye manager Kenny Macleod asked his players for more in the second half and they responded 5 minutes after the restart when Ross Gordon steered the ball low into the net, 10 yards out to the left of the penalty spot. Lochaber’s David Langan spurned a chance to level when the ball broke to him in the penalty area but it was Skye who increased their lead on 74 minutes. Good play from Ross Gordon on the right saw him find James Pringle who sent the ball into the roof of the net from the penalty spot. Skye substitute Archie Millar made a good run before being brought down just outside the D before Taylor Matheson made it 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining. The goal came following a corner and with hardly any back-lift, Matheson sent the ball low by the keeper on his left side. Archie Millar sent a shot a foot past the post in the final minute and whilst Skye took the points, they will be concerned about the extent of Neil MacVicar’s injury. The sides also contested the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup, 50 years on from when it was first played between Skye and Newtonmore in 1972 and the surviving Skye players from that match, and family representatives from others, were invited along as special guests. The trophy was presented to Skye skipper Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod by Thomas’s sister Margaret. Defender John Gillies was Lochaber’s choice as Skye’s best player on the day and he received the Glasgow Mid Argyll Shield.
Glenurquhart 1 Oban Celtic 2 Oban Celtic recorded a morale-boosting first league win of the season when they beat Glenurquhart 2-1 in their noon throw up at Blairbeg. Celtic looked solid in defence and midfield and they took the lead on 33 minutes when Lennon Campbell slotted the ball home following a goalmouth melee. Scott Dempster doubled the Oban side’s lead a minute before the break with a terrific 20 yard shot into the top corner of the net. Dougie MacIntyre was forced to change his team around when defender Lewis Mcphee suffered a blow to the knee. The injury required a hospital visit and looks set to sideline Mcphee for a period of time. Youngster Finlay Cameron came on and played well. The home side pulled a goal back on 74 minutes when Connor Golabek burst into the D and looked set to score before being bundled down by Ewen Campbell. Golabek picked himself up to score from the spot. Glenurquhart’s Connor Golabek turned from saint to sinner as he was sent off by referee Graham Cameron a couple of minutes from time for elbowing Oban Celtic’s Robert MacIntyre.
Inveraray 1 Beauly 3 Title hopefuls Inveraray and Beauly met in a 3pm throw up at the Winterton and it was the league leaders who returned home with both points after coming from behind to win 3-1. Inveraray got off to a great start with Campbell Watt scoring on 4 minutes. They only stayed in front for 5 minutes though before David MacLean brought Beauly level. Robbie Brindle scored the goals that made the difference on 25 and 35 minutes to make it 3-1. There was no scoring in the second half and the win means Beauly go seven points clear at the top of the table although they have played more games than their rivals.

Boleskine started with the wind in their favour and they went close on a couple of occasions but Gordon MacDonald in the ‘Garry goal was on his toes. Glengarry took the lead through Ruaraidh MacDonald on 8 minutes and his strike partner Nick Dalgety made it 2-0 on 14 minutes. Jack West on the half-hour and another from Nick Dalgety on 43 minutes made it 4-0 at the turnaround. The 2022 Single Team Cup Competition Final between Glengarry and Col-Glen is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday 16 July 2022. The venue is to be confirmed.
Col-Glen 6 Tayforth 0 The length of the Mowi South Division 1 table separates leaders Col Glen and bottom side Tayforth so it was no surprise when the home side ran out 6-0 winners at Glendaruel. Scott MacVicar on 12 minutes and Andrew MacVicar on 15 minutes gave Col Glen an early advantage. Former Skye player Daniel MacDonald continued his good scoring run with goals on 25 and 34 minutes to make it 4-0. Auryn Kerr finished well on 56 minutes and a second from Andrew MacVicar on 61 minutes made the final score 6-0. Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup – Quarter Finals Newtonmore 12 Beauly 1 The Newtonmore reserves looked fearsome in attack as they swept aside the Beauly reserves 12-1 in their noon throw up at a blustery Eilan. This noon throw up was just twelve seconds old when Newtonmore gave an indication of what was to come. ‘More, who were without the suspended Daniel Craven, won the centre and Craig Macleod found Evan Menzies whose clever reverse pass played in Craig MacIsaac. He touched the ball inside from the left before crashing a shot high into the net to open the scoring. Craig Macleod added a second on 5 minutes, touching home a good ball forward from Martin Hall. Glen MacKintosh played Evan Menzies through to make it 3-0 on 14 minutes and Craig Macleod got his second on 25 minutes, rolling the ball by the keeper after being played in by Evan Menzies from the left. Craig MacIsaac got his second a couple of minutes into the second half, turning the ball low into the net on his back-hand following a corner on the right. Another from Glen MacKintosh on 49 minutes, turning and shooting by the keeper following a great run forward from Charlie Ferguson, took Newtonmore’s tally to seven. Beauly’s Fraser Cameron pulled a goal back on 55 minutes, shooting from the right of the D. Craig MacIsaac completed his hat-trick with a snap-shot on 62 minutes and Craig Macleod did like-wise on 65 minutes with a shot across the keeper after exchanging passes with Charlie Ferguson to make it 9-1. Glen MacKintosh took his tally to four goals with efforts on 66 and 80 minutes. The former was a trademark turn and shot whilst the latter saw him deflect the ball home. Youngster Euan Dingwall rounded off the blitz just 5 minutes from time, taking Craig Macleod’s pass and finishing well from the right to make the final score 12-1.
Inveraray 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 (After extra-time) It took extra-time to separate the Inveraray seconds and the Glasgow Mid Argyll seconds at the Winterton. There was a strong Lochcarron flavour to the Glasgow side’s win against their lower league opponents as another of their former payers, Ross Brown, made it 4-2 a couple of minutes later.
Glenurquhart 4 Caberfeidh 1 The Glenurquhart second team ran out 4-1 winners against the Caberfeidh second team at Blairbeg. However the Oban side fought back as Joe MacVicar on 71 minutes and a second from Keegan MacPhee on 86 minutes made the final score 4-3.
