The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 18 April 2015 | |
19 April 2015 There was a mixture of league and cup shinty action on Saturday 18 April 2015.
SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Preliminary Round Beauly 2 Kilmallie 2 Kilmallie earned a home replay as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Beauly in their noon throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly’s Sean Stewart had to sit this one out as he served the second game to a two-game ban after his red card against Glasgow Mid Argyll two weeks ago. Colin MacDonald remained on the injury list. Peter Carmichael was still out for the visitors. There were two of shinty’s bright young keepers between the sticks. Beauly keeper Josh Grant represented the Scotland U17s last year whilst Kilmallie goalie Shane Gillies is this year’s Scotland U17 custodian. Kilmallie’s John Stewart and Beauly’s Barrie MacDonald went close with early chances, Beauly went in front on 23 minutes when Marc MacLachlan got on the end of a long ball forward from David MacLean and he rounded keeper Shane Gillies to score. Conor Ross made 2-0 on 29 minutes after good lead-up play from Barrie MacDonald and Calum Morrison and Ross beat his marker and darted forward to score. Kilmallie regrouped at the break and they were a different side in the second half. John Stewart gave them a lifeline when he pulled a goal back just 3 minutes into the second period. Beauly lost full back Jamie MacLennan through injury and their reshuffled defence had to deal with some Kilmallie pressure but they couldn’t find a way past Josh Grant in the Beauly goal. The best chance fell to Ryan Stewart on 84 minutes but he couldn’t score. At the other end, Shane Gillies saved with his feet from Beauly substitute Sandy Elrick as the home side tried to kill off the tie. With the contest deep in injury time, John Stewart saw a shot saved by Josh Grant but Liam MacDonald nipped in to score from the rebound. There wasn’t even time for play to commence from the throw up as referee John Angus Gillies’ final whistle sounded and they will have to do it all over again at the Canal Parks this weekend.
Taynuilt 0 Skye Camanachd 9 Skye Camanachd put the disappointment of last weekend’s penalty shoot-out behind them when they beat Taynuilt 9-0 at the Taynuilt Playing Field. Steven Morrison returned for Skye after serving a one match ban in the Balliemore Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Bute last weekend. Iain Murray and Will Cowie were also back and John MacKenzie was called up from the second team after scoring in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup win over Inverness last weekend. However forward Shockie MacLennan injured his knee in the Bute match and he faces a number of weeks on the sidelines. David MacInnes returned to the second team and manager MacLeod left himself out of the squad. Allan MacKinnon remained out. Taynuilt’s Stewart Sloss served the second match of a two game suspension for his red card against Aberdour in the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup a fortnight ago. The Skye first team beat Taynuilt 9-0 in their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Preliminary Round tie at the Taynuilt Playing Field. It took Skye 42 minutes to break the deadlock with Kenny Campbell notching the only goal of the first half. The Islanders then hit Taynuilt with a goal blitz; scoring seven times in a 16 minutes period. Jordan Murchison made it 2-0 a minutes after the restart. Danny Morrison added a third on 50 minutes with Jordan Murchison getting his second goal a couple of minutes later. Will Cowie got in on the act to make it 5-0 on 54 minutes with Murchison completing his hat-trick on 57 minutes. Will Cowie added his second a minute later before Danny Morrison did like-wise on 61 minutes to make it 8-0. Skye made positional changes and Neil MacVicar rounded off the scoring to make it 9-0 just 4 minutes from time. Skye will now travel to Oban to play Oban Celtic in the first round proper. Skye will now travel to Oban to play Oban Celtic in the first round proper.
Caberfeidh W/O v Glenorchy Caberfeidh received a walk-over as Glenorchy were unable to raise a team for their 3pm throw up at Castle Leod. Cabers will now travel South in the next round for a very first meeting with Aberdour at Silver Sands.
RBS MacTavish Cup – Second Round Newtonmore 3 Lochaber 0 Newtonmore are through to the last four of the RBS MacTavish Cup after they beat Lochaber 3-0 at the Eilan. There was a slight easing of Newtonmore’s injury list as Jamie Robinson and Scott Campbell returned and they both made appearances from the substitute’s bench. Michael Ritchie was back in goal and Neil Stewart retained his place in the starting line-up after scoring on his first start the week before. Glen MacKintosh was the provider as Fraser MacKintosh fired ‘More into a 37 minute lead, crashing the ball into the roof of the net from outside the D. Fraser MacKintosh got his second 9 minutes after the restart when Cameron Binnie released Neil Stewart down the flank and he showed some great wing-play before pulling the ball back for MacKintosh to score. Neil Stewart then helped himself to number three as he scored from the edge of the D on 73 minutes. There were a couple of injury scares during the match. Lochaber goalie Calum MacDonald required a trip to hospital after being knocked unconscious following a collision whilst ‘More’s Cameron Binnie took blows to the hand and face. Newtonmore face Kinlochshiel or Kilmallie in the semi-finals.
Glenurquhart 3 Inverness 0 Glenurquhart were 3-0 winners over Inverness in their 3.15pm throw up at Blairbeg. Calum Smith missed out through work commitments but Andrew Corrigan was available to play and Euan Lloyd returned to the squad after a period on the sidelines through injury. Glenurquhart’s Ewan Brady served a one game suspension for a bookings points accumulation. Former Glenurquhart manager Drew McNeil took his Inverness charges back to Blairbeg, where he won a Macaulay Cup as Glenurquhart manager. He was still without Somhairle MacDonald but he did include former Fort William player Davie Duncan. Andrew Corrigan settled home nerves when he gave Glenurquhart a 17 minute lead. Corrigan was first to react when Inverness keeper Adam MacMaster saved from Lewis MacLennan and he slotted the rebound home to make it 1-0. A combination of keeper MacMaster and the frame of the goal kept the Glen at bay until Lewis MacLennan made it 2-0 on 38 minutes. This goal came from another rebound after MacMaster had a gain made the save and the strike made it more comfortable for the Blairbeg side at the break. Glenurquhart continued to press but former Glen player Liam Girvan was a star at full back for Inverness. The third Glen goal on 50 minutes was a classic example of how to turn defence into attack. As the Highland Capital side tried to penetrate the home defence, Glenurquhart won possession and quickly broke forward with Neale Reid rifling the ball into the net with a shot from the right to make it 3-0. Inverness goalie Adam MacMaster made two good saves from Neale Reid shots from distance as the Glen looked to increase their advantage. There could have been an uncomfortable end to the match for the Glen but Inverness spurned two late opportunities. First, Dougie Rankin played a defence-spitting pass which found Davie Duncan in space on the left but he missed his hit. Then Rankin shot goalwards. Home keeper Stuart MacKintosh saved with his legs and Duncan was first to the rebound but he put the ball past MacKintosh’s right post. So Glenurquhart are through to a RBS MacTavish Cup semi-finals where they will play Skye Camanachd or Fort William. However a concern for Glenurquhart co-managers Billy MacLean and Dave Menzies will be an injury to defender Ally MacKintosh who fell awkwardly mid-way through the second half.
Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup – Second Round Aberdour 0 Inveraray 6 Inveraray are through to the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi-finals after beating Aberdour 0-6 in their 1.30pm throw up at Silver Sands. Inveraray went in front on just 3 minutes when a Euan McMurdo shot took an awkward bounce and deceived home goalie Tom Bowerman to make it 1-0. There was also a touch of fortune about Inveraray’s second goal on 18 minutes with a rebound off keeper Bowerman coming back off defender David MacKenzie and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Aberdour thought they had pulled a goal back through Jack Kelly but the effort was ruled out for a “kick” by referee Calum Girvan. Aberdour must have known it wasn’t going to be their day on the half hour mark when referee Girvan penalised keeper Bowerman and pointed to the penalty spot. Lewis MacNicol stepped up to convert. Inveraray top scorer Grant Griffin put Inveraray out of sight with goals on 40 and 44 minutes to make it 5-0 and he completed his hat-trick 5 minutes after the restart to make it 6-0. Inveraray were unable to add to their tally but they played well and their semi-final meeting with Kyles should be a cracker.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Kyles Athletic 9 Kyles Athletic swept aside an understrength Glasgow Mid Argyll side, winning 9-0 in their 3pm throw up at Yoker. GMA attacker Craig Anderson was an injury absentee, Scotland forward Roddy MacDonald has hit the ground running for Kyles this season and he scored four times. Thomas Whyte and Dunkie Kerr both bagged braces whilst Gordon Whyte grabbed the other. Kyles will now face Inveraray in the semi-finals.
Bute 2 Oban Camanachd 4 (Oban Camanachd won 4-2 after extra-time) Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Bute played two hours of shinty for the third successive Saturday before losing 4-2 to Marine Harvest Premiership side Oban Camanachd in their noon throw up at the Meadows. Bute beat Glenorchy and Skye on penalties in their last two outings so they went into this tie with confidence. Oban Camanachd took an early lead when Andrew MacCuish scored after just 3 minutes. Gordon MacMillan levelled on 65 minutes and that’s the way it stayed so referee Robert Baxter took the tie to an extra-time period. Andrew MacCuish got his and his side’s second goal after 98 minutes and Aidan MacIntyre made it 3-1 on 102 minutes. When Lorne Dickie made it 4-1 on 111 minutes, Bute’s resistance was broken. However John MacCallum did pull goal back for the Islanders a couple of minutes later but Oban Camanachd took the spoils.
Ballachulish 0 Oban Celtic 3 Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Oban Celtic’s terrific start to the season continued as they beat Ballachulish from the Marine Harvest National Division 3-0 at Jubilee Park. John MacDonald was back for Balla’ after missing their last four matches through suspension. Lee Askew has scored in all five of Oban Celtic’s matches this season – all of which they have won – and he put the Oban side ahead on 12 minutes. Balla’s John MacDonald faces another spell on the sidelines after he was shown a straight red card by referee Graham Cameron after 32 minutes. The Oban side took advantage of their one man advantage and Lee Askew doubled his team’s lead on 37 minutes with his second goal of the afternoon – his ninth strike of the season – to make it 2-0. Strathdearn Cup – First Round Aberdeen University 7 Kilmallie 4 Aberdeen University eventually powered past Kilmallie with a 7-4 victory at Balgownie. David Fraser was free from his one game ban for a bookings points accumulation for the Students. Kenny Cushnie put Aberdeen University ahead on 12 minutes only for Kilmallie’s Iain Beagrie to level on 20 minutes. Stuart Cameron restored the home side’s advantage on 31 minutes but Kilmallie drew level once more through Bryan MacKay on 39 minutes. Kilmallie went in front for the first time on 50 minutes with Alexander MacIsaac getting the goal to make it 3-2. However two goals in two minutes from John Sweeney on 58 minutes and Mark Fraser a minute later swung the advantage back the Aberdeen side’s way and they led 4-3. John Sweeney got his second on 65 minutes to make it 5-3 but Kilmallie showed plenty fight and Ross MacKenzie narrowed the advantage to a single goal, making it 5-4 on 71 minutes. Kenny Cushnie and Stuart Cameron each got their second goals on 78 and 85 minutes as Aberdeen finally shook off their opponents.
Marine Harvest Premiership Kingussie 2 Lovat 2 Lovat go to the top of the Orion Group Premiership after they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Kingussie at the Dell. Kingussie gave Rory MacKeachan a marking job on Scotland international Kevin Bartlett and he stuck well to his task. Callum Cruden returned from holiday for Lovat whilst Martin Mainland was also back. James Grieve was missing. Louis Munro put Kingussie ahead on 10 minutes when Savio Genini was given time to control the ball and he set up Munro to score from 15 yards. Lovat full centre Callum Cruden made it 1-1 on 17 minutes with a shot from distance which nestled in the roof of the net. Savio Genini put Kingussie back in front on 24 minutes with a very good strike. Genini was under pressure from a couple of Lovat defenders but he still managed to turn and hit a first-time shot into the net past an unsighted Stuart MacDonald. Lovat took the 2-1 lead into the break. However, just a couple of minutes into the second half, Greg Matheson drifted into space to the left of the penalty spot and he scored to make it 2-2. Kingussie could have won it but for an outstanding reflex safe from Stuart MacDonald after 75 minutes. This wasn’t one of the better clashes between these sides and Kingussie may be happier with the outcome after losing 6-1 to Lovat at Balgate a fortnight earlier. But in truth, the Kings probably did enough to win this encounter and Lovat have keeper Stuart MacDonald to thank for their point.
Fort William 0 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel took both points with a 3-0 win over Fort William at a warm An Aird. Fort William co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson were without the suspended Stevie Stewart and James Tangey as they each served one game bans for bookings points accumulations. Kinlochshiel boss Colin Fraser has had an almost full squad to choose from this unlike last term. The match flowed from end to end in the early stages but Kinlochshiel went in front on 31 minutes. Oliver MacRae played a free-hit from the middle of the park to the ‘Shiel right and Gordie MacDonald on turned and shot into the corner of the net to make it 1-0. John MacRae made it 2-0 on 49 minutes. The visitors sealed the win on 67 minutes when referee John MacGregor penalised Paul MacKay for a “kick” inside the D. The spot-hit responsibility fell to Jordan Fraser, who had missed from the spot against Lochaber in ‘Shiel’s last outing, but this time he made no mistake.
