Newtonmore regained the lead through Glen MacKintosh on 21 minutes. MacKintosh was left unmarked in front of goal when the Lovat defence failed to cut out Craig Macleod’s corner from the left and the former Scotland forward made no mistake. Glen MacKintosh got his second and ‘More’s third goal just 4 minutes later. MacKintosh ran onto Craig Macleod’s pass to the left and he turned James Fraser before firing low across the keeper on his left side. Alasdair Morrison Memorial Cup Match Skye Camanachd 4 Lochcarron 3 Skye Camanachd saw off a spirited Lochcarron fight-back to secure a 4-3 victory and lift the inaugural Alasdair Morrison Memorial Cup at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. The match remembered former Skye Camanachd player, youth coach and first and second team manager Ally “Mor” Morrison who passed away 3 years ago. This first playing for the trophy was delay because of covid and the league meetings between Skye Camanachd and Fort William and the Lochcarron seconds and the Skye Camanachd seconds were both postponed to allow this match to go ahead. The home side’s biggest crowd of the season gathered from near and far for this much anticipated contest with Skye second team manager Allan MacLeod handing over the touchline responsibilities to Alasdair Morrison’s son, Steven Morrison. Skye featured a mixture of first team, second team and U17 players for the match with U14 skipper Seonaidh-Alex MacLeod making an impressive contribution in defence. Lochcarron travelled with a strong squad with injuries restricting Peter MacKenzie and David Bauermeister to places on the bench. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up to mark the previous day’s passing of Skye stalwart Cal MacKinnon. Lochcarron’s Sandy Urquhart had the ball in the net on 12 minutes following a corner on the right but his effort was disallowed for offside. Skye’s Danny Morrison had only played one practice match over the previous three years but showed he has lost none of his touch when he crashed Jordan Murchison’s ball from the left keeper Iain Cameron’s right shoulder to give Skye the lead. However Gregor Cushnie blasted home a great strike from the right to make it 1-1 with 20 minutes on the clock. Skye regained the lead on 33 minutes when Jordan Murchison’s shot was saved by Iain Cameron but Danny Morrison showed his poacher’s instincts to turn home the rebound. Archie Millar and Jordan Murchison combined to set up Danny Morrison who completed his hat-trick just 3 minutes later and Skye led 3-1 at the break. Lochcarron made a strong start to the second half and when Skye failed to clear their lines on 51 minutes, Gregor Cushnie made them pay as he slammed the ball into the top corner of the net to the keeper’s right. Lochcarron levelled the contest on the hour when Sandy Urquhart’s ball from the left found Gregor Cushnie and he tucked the ball low into the net to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-3. Indeed the visitors almost went in front 3 minutes later but Ryan Morrison did well to keep out Ben Dalgety’s effort with Sandy Urquhart’s attempt from the rebound going across goal before the ball was scrambled away for a corner. It was now game on and Dougie MacKenzie and David MacCuish were effective at the back for Lochcarron as Skye tried to get back in front. The winning goal came on 67 minutes when Jordan Murchison, who was involved in all four Skye goals, played Daniel Morrison’s corner from the left on to Ross Gordon and he hammered the ball high into the net from the Skye right. It was a goal fit to win any game. Lochcarron’s Gregor Cushnie almost brought a late leveller but his outrageous over-head flick went just by Ryan Morrison’s left post. There were after-match presentations to referee John Angus Gillies and his goal judges Donnie Martin and George Hendry before Sarah Corrigall and Laura MacKay made their man of the match selection, an excellent choice in Skye’s Danny Morrison, Alasdair Morrison’s younger son, who just edged out Lochcarron’s Gregor Cushnie. Lochcarron captain Douglas MacKenzie led his team up before John Angus Morrison handed over the Alasdair Morrison Memorial Trophy with Skye skipper Ian MacPherson and Danny Morrison in attendance.
