The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 11 June 2022 | |
12 June 2022 Kingussie won the cottages.com MacTavish Cup, Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic reached the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals and Newtonmore reclaimed second place in the Mowi Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 11 June 2022.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final Caberfeidh 2 Kingussie 5 Kingussie collected the first silverware of the 2022 shinty season when they came from two goals down to beat Caberfeidh 5-2 at the Bught Park, Inverness. Kingussie’s last MacTavish success was in 2011 but hopes were high against a Caberfeidh side, ninth in the Mowi Premiership, who have also had to contend with the return of Kieran MacPherson to Kingussie but he was unable to play in the final as he is cup-tied. With Ben MacDonald on holiday, boss Jodi Gorski chose to bring Ally MacLennan out of retirement and after an appearance against Lovat the previous weekend. He started in attack with Kevin Bartlett playing full centre. Skipper Savio Genini cut short a holiday abroad to play and he was restored to the starting line-up after missing the previous week’s win over Oban Camanachd. Louis Munro travelled up from Stranraer for the final and he took a place on the bench. James Falconer started despite still having stitches in a knee wound. A strong wind down the Bught Park pitch isn’t unusual but this was stronger than many regulars could remember. Savio Genini won the toss of the coin but the Kings trusted themselves from the outset, opting to play into the wind in the first half, confident they could outscore any Caberfeidh advantage after the restart. Caberfeidh made use of the elements from the throw up with Ally MacLennan showing early intent with a shot on target. However, Kingussie settled and with their two-two formation in attack, designed to limit Blair Morrison’s influence, Savio Genini made space before striking over the bar. The Caberfeidh support almost raised the Bught Park roof on 6 minutes when Blair Morrison played the ball forward and his brother Craig Morrison fought for possession, finding Colin MacLennan who quickly switched play to Ally MacLennan. With just one thing on his mind, MacLennan held off his marker before turning and blasting the ball over keeper Rory MacGregor’s right shoulder to give Cabers the lead. Kingussie responded and it took a fine save with his feet from Caberfeidh keeper Iain McCall to deny Roddy Young following a hit-in and Savio Genini just couldn’t send the rebound goalwards. The Caberfeidh defence were living dangerously and Roddy Young cut inside with menace but Blair Morrison did well to get his stick to the ball and McCall cleared for a corner whilst moments later, James Falconer hit the side-netting. Caberfeidh continued their direct path to goal and Taylor Condon’s ball from the right found Ally MacLennan in a central position and he picked out Craig Morrison who shot wide. The two danger-men reversed roles with MacLennan turning his man on the left but shooting wide of the far post. The Caberfeidh support roars turned to raptures on 34 minutes. Gavin Mclaughlan launched a hit-in from stand-side on the left and Craig Morrison stretched high to take the ball down at the edge of the D and in one movement he let the ball bounce once before spinning and volleying past a helpless Rory MacGregor to make it 2-0. Caberfeidh now had a tangible advantage to take into the second half whilst Kingussie would always back themselves to turnaround the two-goal deficit with the elements in their favour. However what happened next was the equivalent of the roof caving in on Caberfeidh. There were only 3 first half minutes remaining when James Hutchison won possession in midfield and he found Ruaridh Anderson. Anderson picked out James Falconer who needed no second invitation to shoot goalwards. Iain McCall made a routine save with his feet but, inexplicably, he hesitated with the ball close to his goal-line. Like any good forward, Savio Genini anticipated, gambled even, that a chance might come his way and he followed in to gleefully prod the ball over the line. Caberfeidh were clearly rattled and worse was to follow as a minute before the interval, The Caberfeidh defence were unable to clear a corner from the left and when the ball broke to Savio Genini on the left of the D, he levelled the contest with a powerful drive on his back-hand. Indeed it could have been even better for the Kings as, with seconds of the half remaining, Ruaridh Anderson found space in front of goal by playing a one-two with James Falconer but was denied as Iain McCall redeemed himself with a brilliant reflex save with his club. There were contrasting scenes as referee Willie MacDonald brought the first half to a close. Kingussie had their tails up but Caberfeidh trudged off thinking of what might have been. Kingussie brought Fraser Munro at wing centre as a direct replacement for Liam Borthwick and with the pattern of play now predominantly towards the Caberfeidh goal, Iain McCall made a diving save, low to his left, to turn away Ruaridh Anderson’s shot from distance. James Falconer was next to try his luck when he found space on the right but his shot swerved wide. Kingussie made another midfield change as Louis Munro took over from Lee Bain with James Hutchison going to buckshee back and Munro to centre. The switch certainly worked as Hutchison shored up the defence whilst Munro dominated the midfield where Kevin Bartlett’s first half efforts brought bouts of cramp. Kingussie always looked a threat from free-hits and, when Roddy Young was pushed to the ground at the right of the D, another rehearsed move saw Savio Genini touch a free-hit to James Falconer who saw his strike ping off the metal crossbar. McCall did well to parry another James Falconer effort as Kingussie continued to press. Cabers made their first change as Colin MacLennan was withdrawn in favour of Kyle Grant as the final moved past the hour mark. A rare Caberfeidh attack saw Kevin Bartlett, who swapped roles with Craig Morrison, send a half-volley over the top. Normal service resumed and Cabers were creaking as Iain McCall saved well with his feet from Savio Genini after a nice passing move with James Falconer also going close a couple of times. Cabers made further changes in an attempt to freshen things up whilst Kingussie’s Cameron Bremner, who had a fine game, went off with Liam Borthwick returning. To their credit, Cabers held out until 12 minutes from time. A trip on James Falconer set up another free-hit opportunity to the right of the D. Roddy Young raced onto Savio Genini’s low free-hit across goal to score on his back-hand from the left with his shot going in off the keeper. Caberfeidh’s second half resistance was broken and, just a couple of minutes later, substitute Dylan Borthwick, on for James Falconer, found space in front of goal and he crashed a shot high into the net with his first touch when the ball broke to him following a hit-in on the right. McCall saved well from Louis Munro and Ruaridh Anderson as Kingussie now threatened to run riot. As it was, they added another to their tally on 86 minutes when Ruaridh Anderson cut in from the right, exchanging passes with Savio Genini before sending a sweet strike by an unsighted keeper, just inside his right post, to make it 5-2. It was all over bar the shouting and Kingussie’s strength was in their team performance rather than any outstanding individual display. Caberfeidh captain Blair Morrison was awarded the Tom MacKenzie Medal as man of the match before Kingussie skipper Savio Genini raised the trophy and collected his silver mounted caman in front of a delighted support. It was good to see injured players Alexander Michie and Iain Fraser join in the celebrations.
Artemis Macaulay Cup Quarter Final (South) Oban Camanachd 9 Inveraray 0 Almost everything Oban Camanachd touched turned to goals as they beat Inveraray 9-0 in their 12.30pm throw up at Mossfield. Visitors Inveraray travelled without former Oban Celtic player Ross MacMillan whilst Lewis MacNicol, Allan MacDonald and player / manager Ruaraidh Graham made up their bench. Scott McKillop returned to the Oban Camanachd defence where Louie MacFarlane continued following his fine performance against Kingussie a week earlier. With Daniel Cameron unavailable, defender Daniel Sloss captained the side for the first time and he got off to a good start by winning the toss and opting to play with the wind, allowing his side to build a sizable interval lead. Oban Camanachd’s opener on 20 minutes was a candidate for goal of the match as Malcolm Clark’s ball from a short corner was fired into the opposite top corner of the net from a tight angle by Connor Howe. Oban Camanachd hemmed Inveraray in and the impressive Connor Howe got his second on 29 minutes with Daniel Madej making it 3-0 a couple of minutes later before Connor Howe completed his hat-trick on 34 minutes. The goals kept flowing as Ross Campbell made it 5-0 straight from the restart and Connor Howe got his fourth on 41 minutes to make it 6-0 at half-time. Oban Camanachd introduced Innes Jackson and David Cameron at the break and the second half was just a minute old when Daniel MacVicar netted a seventh from close range. Inveraray now had the elements and it was 10 minutes from time before Ross Campbell got his second and Connor Howe rounded off a wonderful individual display with his fifth goal of the afternoon a minute later to make it 9-0. Inveraray keeper Scott MacLachlan made some fine saves including one from Ross Campbell’s thunderbolt as Oban Camanachd claimed their semi-final spot.
Kyles Athletic 4 Bute 3 (After extra-time) Kyles Athletic had to twice come from behind during the regulation 90 minutes before eventually beating brave Bute 4-3 after extra-time at Tighnabruaich. The first half ended goalless as Bute showed they were not overawed by their higher league opponents and, with a bit of luck, they might well have been ahead at this stage. They did go in front on 56 minutes when Scott Harvey scored but this prompted Kyles manager Robert Baxter to switch Roddy MacDonald from defence to attack with Callum Millar going in the opposite direction and this paid dividends on 62 minutes when Roddy MacDonald levelled. However Bute showed their mettle by regaining the lead through Robin MacAlister on 75 minutes. With just 5 minutes remaining, and a shock on the cards, Roddy Macdonald went on a run into the D where he was upended and referee Alec MacVicar pointed to the spot. Ross MacRae did his usual efficient job to take the tie to extra-time. The extra-time period was just a minute old when Roddy MacDonald put Kyles ahead for the first time in the tie only for Iain McDonald to make it 3-3 just a couple of minutes later. Another mazy run from Roddy MacDonald on 112 minutes made the difference as he completed his hat-trick with the goal of the game. MacDonald waltzed through the Bute defence before scoring on the angle to send Kyles into the semi-finals where they will play Oban Camanachd. The outcome was tough on Bute who matched their Premiership opponents throughout.
Mowi Premiership Kilmallie 1 Newtonmore 2 The clash between Kilmallie and Newtonmore at the Canal Parks was brought forward to Friday 10 June 2022 with a 7pm throw up. This allowed the Newtonmore squad to attend the Bught Park the following day to cheer on their stars of tomorrow in the MacKay Cup Final. Martin Stewart stepped down as Kilmallie first team manager at the start of the week so Liam Cameron, the injured Calum MacDougall and Ryan Stewart took charge from the touchline. They were without Stephen McAlister and Jay MacLeod as well as the suspended Sandy Corrigan. Innes Blackhall was at half back with Michael Rodger at full centre. Newtonmore were minus the suspended Max Campbell but Owen Fraser returned in goal. Iain Richardson replaced Declan Brannan in defence whilst Kenny Ross started at wing centre. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up as both sides remembered Newtonmore’s Andy MacKintosh in what was the club’s first game since his passing. It was very windy with torrential showers of rain making playing conditions difficult for both sets of players. Newtonmore made a good start, going in front on 5 minutes when attacker Fraser MacKintosh used his strength to hold off Robbie MacFadyen before firing low into the corner of the net from around the penalty spot. ‘More pushed Craig Ritchie into the centre forward position in the second half to occupy Kilmallie buckshee back Innes Blackhall who seemed to be getting too much freedom. Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye made some good saves in the game whilst at the other end, Daniel Stewart hammered the ball through a crowded goal area but Owen Fraser saved with his thigh. It would have been controversial had the ball gone into the net as Kilmallie’s Lewis Birrell looked offside. Conor Jones made it 2-0 on 74 minutes when his speculative effort spun over Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye and into the net. A strike from Daniel Stewart on 78 minutes, which dipped quickly into the top corner of the net, got Kilmallie back into it but, with Rory Kennedy in particular alongside Steven Macdonald and Craig Ritchie, outstanding in the ‘More defence, they couldn’t force a leveller and the win takes Newtonmore back to second place in the league.

Aberdour fought back in the second half with David MacDougall scoring on 47 minutes. It was Scott Douglas again though with his fourth of the afternoon on 55 minutes before Aberdour’s Angus Thorburn netted on 81 minutes to make the final score 4-2.
Mowi North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 0 Glengarry 5 Glengarry beat the Skye Camanachd second team 5-0 in their 12.30pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. It was a wet and wild summer’s day with the constant wind and rain making it difficult for both sets of players. Skye Camanachd captain Ian MacPherson won the toss of the coin and opted to play with the wind in the first half. However ‘Garry went ahead on 4 minutes with a well-constructed goal. Shaun Nicolson went by his marker and found Nick Dalgety in space on the right and from 25 yards; he powered a shot into the roof of the net. ‘Garry doubled their lead on 8 minutes when a ball floated from midfield picked out Raymond Robertson on the left and he turned his marker and slipped a nice ball to Rhuairaidh MacDonald who fired low inside keeper Calum Nicolson’s right hand post. Skye had chances but couldn’t hit the target and the closest they came was Archie Millar’s 15 yard strike which went wide of the upright so it remained 2-0 at the turnaround. The visitors, now with the elements, made a bright start to the second half and on 48 minutes, when Skye substitute Allan MacLeod mishit a clearance, the ball came to Nick Dalgety who still had plenty to do but he sent the ball screaming into the keeper’s top right hand corner of the net to score a great goal. Glengarry scored again on 72 minutes when a ball looped into the D wasn’t dealt with by the home defence and young Jack West flicked the ball past Skye keeper Calum Nicolson and Nick Dalgety was free to tap the ball over the line to complete his hat-trick. Just 4 minutes later, Rhuairaidh MacDonald won the ball following a poor clearance out of the Skye defence and, from 15 yards out on the right, he jabbed the ball forward and it bobbled by the keeper, inside his left post. The final 15 minutes were closer but, in the end, ‘Garry more than deserved the win and both sets of players were glad to get off the field for a warm shower. Young Skye defender William James Sutherland played well against Rhuairaidh MacDonald who was a handful whilst the Glengarry forward line were strong with Nick Dalgety deserving the man of the match tag for his hat-trick and his overall performance. The pitch held out well considering and the victory keeps Glengarry in the title race.
