14 April 2013 The first Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup action of the new shinty season took place on Saturday 13 April 2013.
The Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Preliminary Round Caberfeidh 4 Bute 1 Caberfeidh beat Bute 4-1 in their 1pm throw up at Castle Leod. Bute’s James Craig scored the only goal of the first half just 7 minutes before the break. However the second half belonged to Caberfeidh and Ally MacLennan drew them level a minute after the restart. Craig Morrison put the home side in front on 51 minutes and Ally MacLennan got his second 15 minutes from time. James MacIntosh clinched a 4-1 triumph on the stroke of full time. Cabers will now face Oban Celtic in the first round proper.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 2 Glenurquhart 0 League leaders Inveraray remain out in front following their 2-0 win over an injury-hit Glenurquhart side in their 3pm throw up at the Winterton on Saturday. Lewis MacNicol got the opener after 12 minutes with co-player / manager Garry MacPherson getting the clincher 20 minutes from time.
Newtonmore 8 Kinlochshiel 1 Newtonmore were devastating in front of goal as they beat Kinlochshiel 8-1 at the Eilan. Chris Sellar gave the home side a 4 minute lead with Fraser MacKintosh adding a second just a minute later. With Danny MacRae, John MacKenzie, Rory Kennedy and Paul MacArthur all injured, ‘More had worked hard to get Fraser MacKintosh and Glen MacKintosh back to fitness and this was to prove crucial as Glen MacKintosh scored four times on 11, 20, 27 and 58 minutes to put Newtonmore out of sight. Fraser MacKintosh had added his second on 36 minutes and he completed his hat-trick to make it 8-0 on 78 minutes. Gordie MacDonald hit a consolation strike for Kinlochshiel, who were without injured player-maker Finlay MacRae, on 80 minutes. Second place Newtonmore have now scored twenty goals in just five games.
Kyles Athletic 2 Lochaber 0 Kyles Athletic put the defeats to Inveraray and Kinlochshiel behind them as they beat Lochaber 2-0 at Tighnabruaich. Roddy MacDonald got both Kyles goals with first half strikes coming after 36 and 42 minutes.
Lovat 4 Oban Camanachd 0 Lovat remain unbeaten following their 4-0 win over Oban Camanachd in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Scorers Greg Matheson and Kevin Bartlett actually started on the bench but they came on to good effect. All the goals came in the second half with Kevin Bartlett getting his first Orion Group Premiership goal on 47 minutes. Greg Matheson struck twice on 70 and 77 minutes with Owen Ferguson on target a couple of minutes from time. Oban Camanachd’s Scott MacMillan suffered a nasty leg injury which later required sixteen stitches.
Fort William 0 Kingussie 3 Kingussie got back on the winning way with a 3-0 triumph over Fort William at An Aird. Thomas Borthwick returned to the side to give Kingussie the lead after 35 minutes but it took late strikes from Ally Walker after 84 minutes and Paul Gow a minute from time to seal the points.
Balliemore Cup - First Round Skye Camanachd 3 Inverness 1 Skye had to fight all the way to beat a spirited Inverness side 3-1 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. A surging run from Will Cowie created the chance for Neil MacVicar to slam a 7 minute effort into the net. Skye dominated the early period but Inverness went close on a couple of occasions before Charlie MacDonald drifted a terrific 25 yard shot into the roof of the Skye net to make it 1-1 on 16 minutes. Skye keeper Michael Nicolson made an outstanding save just under the crossbar from a brilliant Dougie Rankin drive just before the break. Skye made a positive start to the second half and it was no surprise when they went back in front on 55 minutes. Darryl Macintosh sent a long ball deep into the Inverness defence and Neil MacVicar did well to deflect the ball into the D and Kenny Campbell, making his first top team appearance for a couple of years, steered the ball into the net. Danny Morrison sealed the win on 71 minutes when he slotted a rebound into the net. Mark Sproule had a late penalty saved by Skye keeper Michael Nicolson.
Taynuilt 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Goals from Mark Bain after 5 minutes and Fulton Ross 4 minutes into the second half gave GMA a 2-0 win at Taynuilt.
Strachur 1 Kilmory 0 Strachur beat Kilmory 1-0 following a tight match at Strachurmore. A Bruce Johnston own goal after 72 minutes was all that separated the sides. Mark Robertson missed out for Kilmory as he serves a two match suspension.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly 1 Kilmallie 0 Beauly blew the Marine Harvest North Division 1 title race wide open when they beat league leaders Kilmallie 1-0 at the Canal Parks. Marc MacLachlan, back in the Beauly side after an eye injury, scored the vital goal in the final minute after he engineered some space, despite the attentions of the Kilmallie defenders, before shooting past Kevin Toye who had been excellent all afternoon. Beauly had defender Conor Cormack sent off on 62 minutes by referee John MacLeod following a second booking. However Kilmallie were unable to take advantage of the extra man. Beauly are now level on points with Kilmallie at the top of the table but the Canal Parks side have a better goal difference.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Lochside Rovers 4 Oban Celtic 2 Lochside Rovers enjoyed a 4-2 derby win over Oban Celtic in Oban. Craig MacDougall put the home side ahead after 6 minutes but Kenny Wotherspoon levelled a minute later. Shaun Morgan on 33 minutes and Craig MacDougall’s second 3 minutes later gave Lochside a 3-1 interval lead. Shaun Morgan got his second on 81 minutes although Rory Bruce pulled a goal back in the final minute. The win lifts Lochside Rovers above Oban Celtic, into third place in the table.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kinlochshiel 0 Newtonmore 3 Newtonmore returned from Kirkton with both points following a 3-0 win over Kinlochshiel. Neil Stewart got two of their goals with Sam Richardson getting the other. ‘Shiel were without the suspended Ross Fraser.
Glenurquhart 3 Beauly 0 Liam Girvan gave Glenurquhart a 14 minute lead against Beauly at Blairbeg. Ewan Fraser on 70 minutes and James Hurwood on 82 minutes completed a 3-0 victory. The afternoon ended on a sour note for Liam Girvan who suffered a broken nose. .
Lovat 3 Aberdeen University 1 The match between Aberdeen University and Lovat was switched to Balgate as the Students pitch was unavailable. The home side took the lead in this noon throw up when Fraser Gallacher fired home after 14 minutes. Gallacher added a second a couple of minutes later and completed his hat-trick on 34 minutes. Mark Fraser pulled a goal back for Aberdeen on the stroke of half time to make it 3-1. There was no scoring in the second half.
Glengarry 2 Skye Camanachd 3 Skye Camanachd edged a five goal thriller against Glengarry at Craigard. John Angus MacInnes was credited with Skye’s opener on 16 minutes although Angie MacDonald may have taken the slightest touch before the ball entered the net. Steven Cameron levelled on the half hour mark and there was no further scoring until the final 15 minutes of the game. Angie MacDonald fired Skye back in front on 75 minutes however Daniel MacLennan looked to have rescued a point for the home side when he made it 2-2 on 82 minutes. Skye were not to be denied though and just 60 seconds later, Angie MacDonald was on target again to give the Islanders both points from a 3-2 victory.
Kingussie 2 Fort William 4 Fort William beat Kingussie 4-2 at the Dell. Brian Mabon and keeper Russell Menzies, again playing outfield, counted for the Kings but an Alexander MacMillan double and efforts from Ewan MacQueen and Davie Duncan gave the Fort the win.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Ballachulish 0 Kyles Athletic 1 Kyles Athletic pulled off a great 1-0 win against earlier pace-setters and title favourites Ballachulish at Jubilee Park. The unfortunate Donald Watson put through his own net on 54 minutes and that goal settled the game. Kyles now go a point clear at the top of the table and their keeper Innes MacDonald, son of first team goalie Kenny MacDonald, is the only keeper in all the shinty divisions not to concede a league goal.
Bute 2 Col Glen 3 Col Glen pipped Bute at the Meadows to record a 3-2 win. A long range drive from Steven MacKellar gave the visitors an early lead. His brother Stuart MacKellar made it 2-0 on 10 minutes but Robert Walker reduced the deficit with half time approaching. Steven MacKellar got his second to restore Col Glen Glen’s two goal advantage although Robert Walker’s second 10 minutes from time set up a grand-stand finish but the visitors held on to take the points.
Inveraray 3 Aberdour 2 Inveraray were 3-2 winners against Aberdour in their noon throw up at the Winterton. Aberdour, who have made a great start to the season took the lead thanks to a 14 minute Lisa Norman strike. Ross Anderson levelled on 33 minutes and it remained that way until the break. Andy Sinclair on 55 minutes and Neil Shaw on 70 minutes gave Inveraray a 3-1 advantage and although Aberdour pulled a goal back through Brandon Marshall 8 minutes from time, Inveraray held on to take the points.
Tayforth 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Goals from Jamie MacDonald and Neil Shearer gave Tayforth a 2-0 home win over GMA.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lochaber 4 Kilmallie 0 Lochaber beat Kilmallie 4-0 at Spean Bridge. The home side were boosted by the inclusion of Shaun Nicolson and he chipped in with a hat-trick. Kevin Ferguson got the other.
Boleskine 4 Strathglass 2 Boleskine go top of the table on goal difference, ahead of Kilmallie and Lochaber, following their 4-2 win over Strathglass at Farr. Lewis Smith bagged a brace with Raymond Robertson and Ewan Fraser getting the others. Ciaran Melens got both Strathglass goals.
Strathspey Camanachd 2 Caberfeidh 0 Strathspey beat a young Caberfeidh side 2-0 at Freuchie Park. JJ Grey got the only goal of the first half after 35 minutes and Trevor MacIntosh got their second 5 minutes from time when he netted straight from a shy.
Inverness 0 Lochcarron 5 This match between Lochcarron and Inverness was switched to the Bught Park and the west coast side continued their recent good form with a 5-0 win. Gregor Cushnie grabbed a hat-trick with Ian Cameron and Crisdean Finlayson also on target.
Lochbroom 4 Lewis Camanachd 3 Lochbroom and Lewis Camanachd celebrated the tenth meeting between the clubs in Ullapool with the home side running out 4-3 winners. Steven Bellshaw got Lochbroom off to a great start with a goal in the opening minute. Will Church made it 1-1 on 17 minutes but a James Rolfe strike on 34 minutes gave Broom a 2-1 half time lead. James Rolfe was on target again on 63 minutes to make it 3-1 and when Steven Bellshaw got his second and Lochbroom’s fourth a couple of minutes later, there only looked to be one winner. However Lewis refused to lie down and Will Church got his second on 72 minutes to make it 4-2. Scott Murray made it 4-3 just 7 minutes from time but Lochbroom held on for the win. Lochbroom’s Sandy Urquhart missed out as he served a one match ban for a points accumulation. |
