Skye Camanachd 1 Kinlochshiel 3 | |
01 July 2014 Skye Camanachd went down 3-1 to Kinlochshiel in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 derby meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 28 June 2014. Skye Camanachd co-managers Angie MacDonald and John Angus MacInnes started the match so Donnie Martin and Aonghas MacDonald looked after the team from the touchline. Aonghas MacDonald, Thomas Wilson and Will Cowie dropped out of the Skye pool whilst Magnus Burd was still missing. David Grant, Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod, DJ Gilpin and Chris Campbell all return to the squad. Kinlochshiel boss Willie MacRae made changes to the squad which went down 3-2 to Lochcarron last weekend. Ten of the Kinloshiel squad were teenagers and Colin MacDiarmid served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Keith MacRae and John MacRae returned to first team duty and Colin Fraser managed the first team against Kingussie. However Iain Cameron returned in goal and there were starting slots in attack for Gordie MacDonald, Paul MacRae and Davie Glass. Promising youngster Fergus Dobson was missing. There was a change in match referee for this 1pm throw up with Martin MacLean now taking charge. The Portree pitch was in terrific condition but the recent warm weather meant for a fiery surface. Skye hit towards the Struan Road end of the ground in the first half but Kinlochshiel started well with their experienced forward line always a threat. Both keepers had to make early saves with their feet as Iain Cameron stopped Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod’s long range effort and Iain MacLeod got behind Paul MacRae’s shot from distance. A John Gillies snap-shot from an Iain MacLellan corner on the left on 22 minutes went just wide. A minute later, Davie Glass found Gordie MacDonald but his first time shot went past the post. Gordie MacDonald took the ball at the back post on 24 minutes but Iain MacLeod saved well with his feet. Referee Martin MacLean awarded Kinlochshiel a penalty on 28 minutes. A long ball from the left took a wicked bounce inside the D and Skye keeper Iain MacLeod was judged to have saved the ball with a raised foot. Paul MacRae stepped up to take the spot-hit but Iain MacLeod saved the ball with his legs and turned it away for a corner. Kinlochshiel made the first change of the match on the half hour mark when Colin MacRae took the place of Duncan Newton Grant in attack. A turn and shot on his backhand from Gordie MacDonald on 32 minutes was blocked by Iain MacLeod. Iain MacLeod was back in action on 38 minutes when he first flicked away a dangerous ball into the D and he then stopped a Paul MacRae effort at his post. Gordie MacDonald put the visitors ahead after 46 minutes when he juggled the ball before slotting it past Iain MacLeod from close range to make it 1-0. Kinlochshiel extended their lead a couple of minutes later when a Paul MacRae shot from distance found its way into the net. Gordie MacDonald found Davie Glass on 54 minutes and he made it 3-0 to leave the Kirkton side in control. Iain Cameron saved an Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod shot as Skye fought back. Alan Palmer came on for Skye with John Angus MacInnes coming off and Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod dropping back to full centre. Iain Cameron made a terrific double save as he denied David MacInnes just under the crossbar and then stopped a low Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod shot at his post. John Gillies shot into the side-netting from the resulting corner from Calum Gibb. James Pringle replaced David MacInnes with Iain MacLellan dropping back into midfield. Daniel Morrison also came on for Skye. Kinlochshiel took Chris Townsend off and Ross MacRae came on. A low Angie MacDonald shot from distance was saved well with his foot by Iain Cameron at the expense of a corner by Iain Cameron on 66 minutes. Iain MacLeod saved a Gordie MacDonald shot from the near post on 70 minutes as the visitors played with a two-two forward line. A Colin MacRae shy caused problems for the Skye defence as Paul MacRae’s shot deflected off Andrew Banks and Iain MacLeod did well to turn the ball away for a corner. Skye pulled a goal back on 74 minutes when Iain MacLellan’s free-hit found its way through to Angie MacDonald and he turned and sent a backhand shot into the net to make it 3-1. Paul MacRae found Gordie MacDonald from a Ross MacRae corner on the left on 78 minutes but he put the ball past the post when it looked easier to score. Duncan MacRae came on for ‘Shiel with 10 minutes remaining whist James Pringle was introduced for Skye and David MacInnes came back on. Skye’s John Gillies was replaced by John Angus MacInnes as the match moved into the final 5 minutes. The substitutions continued as Duncan Newton Grant came back on for Davie Glass but there were no further chances and Kinlochshiel’s win takes them off the bottom of the league with Skye dropping to the foot of the table. Kinlochshiel deserved their win and Paul MacRae and Duncan “DA” MacRae dashed down the road to take up substitute slots for the first team in their Orion Group Premiership encounter with Kingussie. Sky will need to raise their performance considerably if they are going to get past Strathspey Camanachd in the Strathdearn Cup semi-finals this coming weekend.
