Skye Camanachd 1 Glengarry 1 | |
19 May 2014 Skye Camanachd drew 1-1 with Marine Harvest North Division 2 league leaders Glengarry at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 17 May 2014. Skye co-managers Angie MacDonald and John Angus MacInnes were on the field for this noon throw up so Donnie Martin looked after the team from the sidelines. David Grant, Thomas Wilson and Daniel Morrison returned to the squad whilst Paul MacKinnon, Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod, Chris Campbell and Stephen Murchison were left out. Conor Ross was a late call-off so U14 and U17 player John Gillies came into the squad and he started on the bench. Glengarry manager Ewen Cameron was missing the Kincraig contingent who have supplemented his squad this season as they were on holiday. George Henderson was free of suspension after serving a two game ban but he was unable to travel. Skye played towards the Struan Road end of the ground in the first half. Both sides had early chances with Angie MacDonald going close at one end and Daniel MacLennan releasing James Barron at the other end but Iain MacLeod did well to come off his line to block the ball before being fouled. Skye took the lead on 31 minutes when a brilliant turn and explosive shot from Angie MacDonald flew into the top corner of the net and gave ‘Garry keeper Gordie MacDonald no chance. It was a terrific goal and a timely boost for a side that have found points hard to come by over the last few weeks. Skye were on a roll and moments later a surging run from Magnus Burd saw the wing centre release a reverse pass to Angie MacDonald but Gordie MacDonald saved and swept the ball to safety. Glengarry had the final chance of the half when Daniel MacLennan played a one-two but his shot from the left hit the outside of the stanchion. Constant rain had started to fall midway through the first half and although the pitch wasn’t affected, it made for unpleasant conditions for the players and supporters. The Islanders had the better of the first half but it was a different story in the second period. Stewart MacArthur came on for Martin Cameron for Glengarry at the start of the second half. Glengarry drew level on 48 minutes following a corner on the right and Daniel MacLennan collected a clearance out of the Skye defence before firing a 25 yard shot into the net to make it 1-1. Gordie MacDonald saved with his feet from Iain MacLellan on 58 minutes and as play switched to the other end, a brilliant Iain MacLeod save just under his crossbar denied Daniel MacLennan a second following a Steven Cameron pass. The Skye keeper stretched to tip the ball over the ball with his caman. Daniel Morrison came on in midfield for Skye in place of Thomas Wilson and moments later Glengarry made their second change of the afternoon with Ben Armitage replacing James Barron. Gordie MacDonald saved with his feet from Angie MacDonald after a good break down the left wing by Iain MacLellan. Kyle Pirie came on at the back for Skye with Callum Gibb coming off. Glengarry really started to press the Skye defence and Daniel MacLennan broke down the ‘Garry right on 75 minutes before shooting wide. Calum Gibb returned to the field of play for Skye as he replaced DJ Gilpin who has been suffering from a hip injury. Another Daniel MacLennan effort went just a foot over the bar after he was set up by Ben Armitage. John Gillies came on for Skye to make his second team debut at wing forward. Daniel MacLennan shot goalwards again but he was unable to trouble Iain MacLeod as the teams entered the final 10 minutes of play. Iain MacLeod did well to clear an Andrew Gilchrist ball into the D with Daniel MacLennan closing him down. Glengarry forced a series of late corners and there was almost continues pressure on the Skye defence. Good determined play from Magnus Burd forced a corner for Skye with 5 minutes remaining which gave the home defence some respite. Angie MacDonald got on the end of the corner but Gordie MacDonald made the save with his feet and cleared for another corner with John Gillies looking to capitalise on any slip-up. Gordie MacDonald did well to come off his line and clear for a corner as Angie MacDonald broke free of his marker. Martin Cameron was reintroduced in place of Scott Bremner with just a couple of minutes remaining. The rain started to get heavier just as referee John Matheson brought proceedings to an end. This was a hard earned point for Skye and Glengarry were left frustrated at not gathering both points on the back of their second half performance. However the draw does mean that they go a point clear of Fort William at the top of the table but they have now played a game more. The Skye seconds face another stiff test this coming weekend when they host Lochcarron at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
