Scotland Men Win Iomain Cholmcille XI | |
18 November 2018 The Scotland men’s squad were winners at Iomain Cholmcille XI which took place in Derrybeg, County Donegal, Ireland on Saturday 17 November 2018. The Scots beat Michael Breathnach 5-0 to 1-3 in their opening match of this Gaelic speaking tournament. Alba’s Somhairle MacDonald grabbed a hat-trick with Stuart Campbell and William MacKinnon getting the others. A Somhairle MacDonald double then helped see off Fir Uladh; one of which was a brilliant rocket-shot which was past the keeper before he could move. Next up for the Scots was a 2-4 to 0-4 victory over Gaeil Óga CLG. Somhairle MacDonald was again to the fore with Jack Fraser getting the other Alba goal. This set up a final meeting with Michael Breathnach and it took extra-time before the Alba eventually ran out 3-6 to 3-5 winners. The final was a great game - end to end from the throw-in – and it took a Somhairle MacDonald goal in the final minute, adding to his earlier two goals and single point, to take the game into an extra-time period. A goal from William MacKinnon at the start of extra-time was cancelled out by an Irish goal into the second half of the extended period. The winning point came with just a few minutes to go with Paul Duke striking the ball between the posts to win it for the Scots, (4-3) 15-14 (3-5). Alba captain John Angus MacInnes was presented with the Iomain Cholmcille trophy after the final whistle. Thuirt co-mhanaidsear na h-Alba Sean MacLeòid “Tha sinn fear air ar dòigh leis an fharpais an-diugh. ’S e rud mòr a bh’ ann na Breathnaich a bheatadh ann an Èirinn, ach cuideachd gun robh na balaich againn uile a’ sabaid dhan mhionaid mu dheireadh agus ga bhuannachadh ann an dòigh cho math. As dèidh don phròiseact fhèin Duais na Gàidhlig fhaighinn, ’s e deagh sheachdain a bh’ ann dhuinn agus thug an deireadh -seachdain misneachd mhòr dhan a h-uile duien a bha an sàs ann. Ar taing do Phàdraig O Mianain agus Daithi Roberts o Uladh airson gach rud a chur air dòigh dhuinn.” The Scotland Women’s side lost 1-2 to 1-0 to Cois Fharraige in their first game with Christy MacIntyre scoring the goal. They ten went down 4-9 to 0-0 against a strong Uladh side. Thuirt Gibb “Bha mi gu math toilichte le oidhirpean an sguad. ’S e sguad caran tana a bha againn ach fhuair iad eòlas gu leòr às an latha a bheir buannachd dhuinn san àm ri teachd. Tha e cudromach gum bi na cothroman seo ann airson daoine òga, agus bha sinn gu math toilichte gun d’fhuair sinn aithneachadh aig Duaisean na Gàidhlig. Iomain Cholmcille were also winners at the recent Gaelic Awards, taking the honours for the best contribution from the Gaelic sporting world, from practitioners, commentators or fans. |
