North U17 6 South U17 1 - UPDATED! | |
03 October 2013 The North U17 retained the bragging rights with a 6-1 win over the South U17 at Mossfield on Sunday 29 September 2013. There was little between the teams during the early exchanges on a sunny Oban day. The South defence was well marshalled by captain Ian MacFarlane of Oban Celtic as the back-line held their own against the highly rated North forward line. However the turning point came after 25 minutes with the introduction of Kinlochshiel’s Ally Nixon at full forward and he broke the deadlock with an instinctive strike on 28 minutes to make it 1-0. The South responded immediately with a well worked goal of their own as Oban Celtic’s Connor Sartain got on the end of a sweeping move to fire past Josh Grant from Strathglass in the North goals to make it 1-1. However just a couple of minutes later, Kingussie’s Savio Genini restored the North advantage when he flicked the ball home from inside the D to make it 2-1. Further goals from Lochaber’s Barrie MacDonald and Ally Nixon’s second strike of the afternoon extended the North’s advantage to 4-1 at the interval. Oban Celtic’s David Martin in the South goals was the busier of the two keepers, pulling of some excellent reflex saves, but he was powerless to prevent the North adding to lead on 70 minutes when Barrie MacDonald expertly fired home from the edge of the box for his second goal to make it 5-1. Kilmallie’s Jordan MacPhee made it 6-1 shortly after to round of an impressive win for the North team. North Captain Arran MacPhee was presented with the trophy by his father Duncan MacPhee who sponsored the event. The Camanachd Associations National Development Ronald Ross said, “The youth representative matches are such an important date in the youth diary, bringing together the best young talent our game has to offer.” The squads were as follows: North U17 Squad Josh Grant - Strathglass Cameron MacNiven - Newtonmore Lewis Smith - Fort William Blair Morrison - Caberfeidh Arran MacPhee - Fort William Liam Mullender - Newtonmore Sean Lieder - Fort William Struan Kish - Newtonmore Euan Lloyd - Glenurquhart Alasdair Nixon - Kinlochshiel Will Cowie – Skye Camanachd Jordan MacPhee - Kilmallie Barry MacDonald - Lochaber Lewis Morrison - Fort William Savio Genini - Kingussie Calum Morrison - Beauly Coaches: Iain Smith and Martin Bell
