Kinlochshiel 2 Skye Camanachd 3 | |
06 March 2023 The Skye Camanachd second team opened their season with a 3-2 win against the Kinlochshiel second team at Kirkton on Saturday 4 March 2023. This 2.30pm throw up was originally scheduled for Pairc nan Laoch, Portree but an unplayable pitch led to a venue switch on Friday. Kinlochshiel fielded a strong side with Duncan “Ach” MacRae, Rhuairaidh MacDonald and Paul MacRae to their ranks. Skye lost Ross Nicolson, who was a late call-up to the first team, so Oliver Langlands took his place in the squad and the Islanders played up the slope in the first half. Full forward Ruaraidh MacLeod’s return from injury has boosted Skye after he missed most of last year and he gave his side a 15 minute lead when he turned his marker and ran through on goal before slipping the ball by keeper Calum MacMillan. Skye goalie Calum Nicolson then made a great save to keep his side in front, tipping over Seamus Martin’s shot from distance. Skye were forced into an early change when Iain MacInnes replaced William James Sutherland. ‘Shiel veteran Paul MacRae levelled on 23 minutes, forcing home a corner from the left, low into the net from a tight angle on the right of the D. However it only took Skye 6 minutes to regain the initiative through Archie MacDonald. Ian MacPherson made a good run forward to win a corner on the Skye left. MacPherson found Archie MacDonald from the set-piece and, from a central position, he shot low to the keeper’s left and into the corner of the net to make it 2-1 and Skye took their advantage into the interval. Archie Millar went close for Skye with a great strike which rose just over the crossbar following Seonaidh-Alex MacLeod’s free-hit. Then, at the other end, Paul MacRae gathered the ball with his back to goal before turning but his shot cannoned off the keeper’s right post. A second goal of the game from Ruaraidh MacLeod, a turn and shot from wide on the right following James Robertson’s pass, went low across keeper to give Skye a 3-1 lead on 73 minutes. Shiel pulled a goal back just a minute later through Lewis MacVicar’s backhand strike from just left of centre to make it 3-2. Ruaraidh MacLeod was denied a hat-trick when he hit the post from a tight angle on the left whilst the Skye defenders all played their part towards the end of the game with David MacInnes outstanding at full back. Next up for Skye is a trip to face Glengarry on Saturday.
