Kingussie U17 & Newtonmore U17 Victories Set Up 2014 Badenoch London Shield Final - UPDATED! | |
04 October 2014 Kingussie U17 and Newtonmore U17 won through to the 2014 London Shield Final following their respective semi-final victories on Saturday 4 October 2014. The semi-finals brought together the top two sides from the North and South London Shield Leagues.
Newtonmore U17 4 Lochcarron U14 2 (After Extra Time) Newtonmore U17 came from 2-0 down to beat Lochcarron 4-2 after extra-time in their noon throw up at Balgate on Saturday 4 October 2014. The tie was switched from Craigard to Balgate as the Newtonmore second team played the Lovat reserves in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 fixture later in the day and some ‘More players were due to take part in both games. Lochcarron’s Lachlan Dean Morris put his side ahead on 26 minutes with the only goal of the first half. Nick Dalgety was in fine form for Lochcarron in midfield and when Lachlan Dean Morris got his and his side’s second goal on 44 minutes, things looked bleak for Newtonmore. However the west coast side first lost defender Samuel Parsons following a knock to his throat and just 5 minutes later, full back Johnnie MacAskill was forced off with what was later confirmed as a torn muscle in his shoulder. Newtonmore pushed Craig Ritchie and Sam Richardson, who was back in the side after an absence, further forward and the move paid dividends when two goals from Sam Richardson on 67 and 72 minutes turned the tie and drew the sides level at 2-2. With no further scoring, referee Martin MacLean took the game into an extra-time period. With extra-time just 3 minutes old, Iain Robinson hit an 83 minute strike to put ‘More ahead for the first time in the tie. With Lochcarron trying to restore parity, Sam Richardson completed his hat-trick on 93 minutes to put his side through to the final.
Skye Camanachd U17 0 Kingussie U17 3 Kingussie U17 beat Skye Camanachd U17 3-0 in their London Shield semi-final at Craigard on Saturday 4 October 2014. Kingussie’s James Falconer made the difference with a hat-trick in this 3pm throw up. After an even opening period, Skye lost defender John Gillies with an arm injury. James Falconer, who made an impressive substitute appearance for Kingussie in their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final win over Glenurquhart, fired his side into the lead with 20 minutes played. Skye were prompted in midfield by the excellent Will Cowie but the Kingussie defence kept the Islanders’ forward line at bay. Skye’s North U14 defender Marcus Ross then had to leave the field with a suspected broken finger. James Falconer got his second to make it 2-0 mid-way through the second half. Skye were still in the game but when Falconer completed his hat-trick late in the tie, there was no way back for the Islanders. The tie was played in good spirit with plenty good shinty from both teams and Kingussie U17 will now meet Newtonmore U17 in the 2014 London Shield Final.
The London Shield Final has in the past been part of the Marine Harvest Shinty / Hurling international fixture between Scotland and Ireland in Inverness. However this year’s final will be a stand-alone event. Saturday 1 November 2014 has been pencilled in as a possible date with the teams likely to settle for the Dell or the Eilan as a Final venue. |
