21 April 2022 It was with great sadness that everyone at Skye Camanachd heard of the passing of Danny Stoddart. No Skye Camanachd away trip was complete without a visit to Cluanie Inn for a bowl of soup before the game and a stop for something stronger afterwards. Danny was the perfect host, a true character who found the ideal balance between providing and entertaining environment whilst still maintaining order. The stop-off on the way home also usually meant a meeting with whichever team was playing the other Skye team in Portree on their way home and indeed Kinlochshiel or their opponents on the day. These were good times and nobody wanted to leave meaning the journey home from Cluanie was an event in itself. The departure plan from Cluanie was dictated by the time of the final Saturday ferry from Kyle to Kyleakin before the evening break. A total 30 minutes was the intended allocation time for the poor driver but by the time John the Caley’s order that: “The bus leaves in 5 minutes!” was adhered to, this particular leg of the journey often had to be safely negotiated in little more than 20 minutes. That said, the ferry crew often waited a bit longer than prescribed as they watched for the Skye Camanachd mini bus coming over the hill into Kyle, sometimes feeling as if it was cornering on two wheels! Danny will always be fondly remembered and the sympathies of everyone at the club go out to Elma and the rest of the family. |
