Billy Irving Benefit Shinty Match | |
15 June 2016 Taynuilt Shinty club are hosting a Benefit Shinty Match for their former player, Billy Irving, at the Taynuilt Sports Field on Sunday 26 June 2016 Billy, who is currently being held in jail in India, awaiting an appeal hearing, has had his plight reported in the national press and his situation continues to be an unfolding nightmare for Billy, his family and his friends. He was working on an anti-piracy vessel off the coast of India when Indian police boarded the vessel and arrested all the men on board for allegedly trying to smuggle weapons and ammunition. They told the authorities that this was not the case and they had the weapons to protect other people from pirates and that everything was legal and above board. This happened around two years ago and Billy and his colleagues were expecting to get their belongings back just recently but, unbelievably, they were sent back to prison for 5 years. They are currently awaiting an appeal hearing. The shinty community are asked to come together to help Billy and his partner fund the best legal help possible to get Billy home to his family. The match will see a Taynuilt / Kilmory select take on an All-Star team at the Taynuilt Sports Field on Sunday 26 June 2016. Throw up is at 2.30pm. The All-Stars squad will include Ronald Ross (Kingussie), Victor Smith (Fort William), Willie MacDonald (Fort William), John MacDonald (Ballachulish), Graham MacPherson (Inveraray), Mark Bain (Glasgow Mid Argyll), Iain McDonald (Bute) Daniel Cameron (Oban Camanachd) and Allan MacKechnie (Glenorchy) with other players to be confirmed nearer the time. All proceeds from the match will go to help with Billy’s legal fees. |
