03 June 2022 The shinty world was both shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Newtonmore’s Andy MacKintosh after the popular 31 year old passed away on Wednesday 1 June 2022. Andy MacKintosh was a Scottish international defender whose haul of medals and accolades with Newtonmore included captaining the side to Camanachd Cup success in 2018, beating Lovat in the final, whilst being awarded the coveted Albert Smith medal by Rene Smith following the 2016 Camanachd Cup win over Oban Camanachd. International honours followed through the levels with Andy progressing to form part of a formidable Scotland defence which included teammates and good friends Rory Kennedy and Steven Macdonald. A Newtonmore spokesperson said: "There literally aren’t any words to convey our feelings at the Club today. Our love, prayers and every waking thought are with Megan, Marnie, Hadley, Iain, Christine, Alison, the MacKintosh family and all of Andy’s many, many friends, we send our deepest condolences to them all. “The darkest of shadows has been cast over us. Andy’s shining light has been taken from us, from the shinty world and from our community.” Shinty historian Dr Hugh Dan MacLennan added: “I cannot recall the shinty community ever being tested like this in my lifetime. It is an apparently endless list of good people taken far too soon. There are no words that can comfort.” Tributes and messages of condolences followed from shinty clubs across the country and following their match with Kingussie at the weekend, Gareth Evans and the Oban Camanachd squad, many of whom were good friends with Andy, stopped off at his parents’ house to pay their respects.” |
