A Camanachd Association announcement on Friday 8 May 2020 confirmed the postponement of the 2020 Mowi Shinty / Hurling / Camogie internationals against Ireland.
The Scotland’s men’s senior and U21s as well as the women’s teams were due to play their Irish counterparts in October 2020.
The Association said the decision was made due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic and was taken in agreement with the Gaelic Athletics Association (GAA). The health and safety of players, coaches, officials and spectators were all at the forefront of this decision. Should government restrictions allow shinty to return this year, the focus will be to maximise participation within our communities.
Derek Keir, Camanachd Association CEO, said: “The decision to cancel the Mowi Shinty / Hurling internationals was not taken lightly. However, the Camanachd Association Board of Directors, along with the GAA in Ireland, agreed that running this year’s Internationals would just not be possible due to the implications and restrictions of COVID-19. The Camanachd Association will continue to monitor and follow national guidance and our focus will be on providing opportunities for all communities if restrictions allow when it is safe to do so.”
Lisa MacColl, Women’s Camanachd Association President, added: “Due to the impact of Covid-19, the uncertain nature of travel and unknown restart of sporting events, the Women’s Camanachd Association and Munster Camogie have taken the obvious and sensible decision to cancel the 2020 Women’s Shinty / Camogie fixture. We hope the wider shinty community are staying safe. We look forward to seeing you all again as soon as it is safe to do so.”
